Welcome It is 100 years since the Armistice was signed denoting the end of World War One and The
Returned & Services League (Queensland Branch) Macleay Island Sub Branch Inc. is
commemorating this event with The Diggers’ Requiem’ (a moving and evocative Australian
tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One); a Remembrance Day Service;
and a Community Buffet Luncheon.
1. The Diggers’ Requiem Concerto commencing 0850 hrs tells the story of the iconic
battles for Australians on the Western Front, including Fromelles, Pozières,
Bapaume, Bullecourt, 3rd Ypres and Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux, and Amiens.
The music includes the final work by the Australian composer FS Kelly, his Somme
Lament, written just two weeks before his death in 1916 on the Somme. Composers
Nigel Westlake, Elena Kats-Chernin, Richard Mills, Graeme Koehne, Ross Edwards,
Andrew Schultz and Christopher Latham have all written movements. This requiem
will feature the ringing of 62,000 bells, to commemorate the death of every
Australian who died in WW1.
Refreshments are available whilst you listen and reflect that war is over for all who
fought it. Their sacrifice must be made meaningful. It is for us to strive to win the
peace.
2. The 2018 Remembrance Day Service will follow the Diggers’ Requiem at 1030 hrs,
with youth involvement from TS Diamantina Australian Naval Cadets [cenotaph
party] and Macleay Island State School students [flag party]. A minute’s silence will
be observed at 1100 hrs.
3. On completion of the commemorative service you are invited to share with us a
Community Buffet Luncheon commencing 1200 hrs at Pub Paradise. Purchase of the
$5.00 souvenir program (limited to 100) will entitle you to a complementary
luncheon. Otherwise the subsidised luncheon will be provided at $20.00 per head,
courtesy Pub Paradise Bistro.
