Installation of such surfaces has to comply with the requirements of the VOB and the ZTV road construction. The usage categories divide loads into three categories (N1 to N3) from pedestrian to car to occasional vehicle loads up to 20 t permissible gross vehicle weight.

ROMEX® - TRASS-BED and ROMEX® - TRASS-COMPOUND For bonded systems, only high-quality and partially plastic-modified Portland / Trass cement mixes are used, as the trass mineral combi-nes with the lime particles of Portland cement to neutralize them. The great advantage is the greatly reduced risk of waterlogging, efflorescence and discoloration. In conventional Portland cement products without trass, the lime particles migrate through the joint and stone covering to the surface where they react with the CO2 of the air. The result: A lime layer forms on the rock surface, which is called “efflorescence“.

WATER PERMEABILITY A synthetic resin based paving joint mortar basically always con-sists of two components. One component is the binder, which is responsible for curing and sta-bility. The other component is the filler, which is critical to wa-ter permeability. The filler com-ponent is a washed, fire-dried quartz sand in different particle sizes. The quartz sands have no zero components, as is the case with cement (cement dust). This creates cavities through which the water can seep down. The size of the cavities, which is a function of the grain size , determines the degree of water permeability. Especially during winter the advantage of the cavities becomes evident. Water, which is still in the joints during freezing and freezes, can expand in the cavities. This prevents cracks or breaks in the joints.

RESIN FILM Refinement of stonesAfter jointing with synthetic resin paving joint mortar, a fine syn-thetic resin film remains on the stone surface, which intensifies the color of the stones and pro-tects the paving against soiling. This film disappears with free weathering of the surface and by abrasion over time. Excepti-ons: ROMPOX® - EASY, ROMPOX® - PATIO, ROMPOX® - POWER JOINT, ROMEX® - JOINTING SAND NP and ROMEX® JOINT STRENGTHENER leave behind almost no synthetic resin film. Our 1-component systems are suitable for almost all natural and con-crete stones as well as slabs with a joint width of 1 mm, depending on the product. 1-component systems cure with air-oxygen. As a result, they do not have to be mixed at the construction site and are ready for immediate use. The label-free, water permeable joint products are also ideal for do-it-yourselfers due to their ease of use. Main areas of use are patios, garden paths and areas around the house.

Our high-quality 2-component epoxy resin based paving joint mortar is used around the house, e.g. in driveways and on parking spaces. Grout almost any natural or concrete block and slabs with a joint width of at least 3 mm, depending on the product. During the initial period after grouting with a 2-component epoxy resin paving joint mortar, a fine synthetic resin film remains on the stone surface, which intensifies the color of the stone and protects against dirt.

Ceramic tiles, tiles in natural stone or wood look and high quality natural stone coverings are fully on trend. Because ceramics are, in contrast to concrete and natural stone, colorfast, scratch resistant and less sensitive to dirt. Professional, bonded laying with the right system is the basic requirement for a durable covering that with-stands all weather conditions. Because ceramic tiles are on average 2 cm thick, these are laid for permanent outdoor use and are water permeable. In addition movement joints should be laid.

Interlocking stone paving stones are often laid in unbonded form in driveways. But also on house parking spaces, garden paths and ter-races you can see this sturdy, durable paving stone surface. Not least because of its timeless design. There is one disadvantage, however: The narrow joints are not ideal for use with conventional paving joint mortars, so that weeds often grown through the joint. To prevent this and to ensure a permanently weed-free area, there is only one efficient way which is to incorporate unbonded ROMEX® - JOINTING SAND NP and for areas with heavy loads (drip edges, slopes) also useROMEX® - JOINT STRENGTHENER. The combination of both pro-ducts combine their respective advantages. The weed-inhibiting joint sand can already be used from 1 mm, so that the joints are com-pletely filled. The joint strengthener ensures the necessary and las-ting stability.

Many concrete blocks as well as more and more natural stone cover-ings are factory coated. These coatings are supposed to protect the stone surface against dirt and color fading and prevent algae / moss formation. Depending on the type of coating, this can react in rare cases with some synthetic resins and lead to stains or sandy surfaces. Preliminary tests are therefore always advisable. When choosing the paving mortar, make sure it doesn’t leave a synthetic resin film and that it harmonizes with the coating. We guarantee that our recommended products for coated stone coverings can be used without hesitation.

Polygonal slabs have been very popular for years. Their natural, rus-tic form ensures a welcoming, Mediterranean flair in the garden. The special features of irregular shapes and broken edges require special care when laying. One reason for this is the different slab thicknesses between 2-6 cm and the usually conical gradient form, which means bonded laying construction with the right system is a basic requirement for a durable, stable surface. For lasting outdoor use, the polygonal slabs need to be laid on a bonded construction that is water permeable and jointed with strong jointing mortar.
