    New fixed finestake effect

After a slight delay, penalty fines have nowincreased. The Department for Transport hasconfirmed that as well as affecting motoringoffences, these changes also increase graduatedfixed penalties and financial deposits for vans,

trucks and buses. Offences againstroadworthiness, loading and drivers hours rules

will result in higher penalties at the roadside.VOSA Chief Executive Alastair Peoples said

these new penalty levels are intended to ensurepenalties reflect the seriousness of the offenceand are consistent with those in other areas ofoffending. I know the majority of operators anddrivers work within the law, but those that dontneed to know there are increased financialconsequences and they should reconsider if its

worth the risk. Increases will also be made to themaximum deposit that we can take at the

roadside from offending overseas vehicles.Penalty points will not change.

Careless drivers who place other road users atrisk by committing new offences such astailgating or poor lane discipline now also faceon-the-spot penalties. The changes give the

police greater flexibility in dealing with lessserious careless driving offences, freeing them

from resource-intensive court processes. While there are clear road safety benefits from

the police targeting the worst offenders, there areconcerns that the initiative is not addressing thecause of the problem effectively. The Institute of

Advanced Motorists recommends that driverretraining courses have a much bigger

potential to actually improve poor driving thansimply issuing a standard fine and should alwaysbe offered as the first stage of prosecution.

The Freight Transport Association is askingthat national guidelines are issued to remove therisk of summary justice being applied togenerally subjective offences such as tailgatingand being in the wrong lane, to avoid the

postcode lottery of some offences beinginterpreted differently by different police forces. The Road Haulage Association has called into

question the available police resources to enforcethe new fines, as the number of traffic police inEngland and Wales has plummeted 23% over the

    past five years.

    Employment lawchanges: an overview

As R&Sreaders will be aware, the Government has implemented major

changes to employment legislation, in a bid to improve workplace

relations and to make it more attractive for companies of all sizes to

    take on new employees.

Heres a handy overview from employment relations experts Acas of

the main changes being made, as well as the major consultations that

the Government has launched on proposed reforms to come.

Proposed changes to employment law Launch date

School leaving age to rise to 17 years Summer 2013

Third party harassment provision in the Equality ActThe circumstances where the employer knows that the individual has been subjectedto such harassment on at least two other occasions will be repealed; however, employers may still be liable where an employee is harassed by a person who is notan employee.

    To be confirmed

Transfer of undertaking protection of employment (TUPE)TUPE protects employees terms and conditions of employment when a business istransferred from one owner to another. Employees of the previous owner when thebusiness changes hands automatically become employees of the new employer onthe same terms and conditions. The consultation to the proposed changes cover the

service provision and should they be retained or repealed, whether or not theemployee liability information should be provided earlier to the transferee andwhether an amendment to TUPE would be possible to ensure that a change to thelocation of the place of work would not necessarily lead to automatic unfairdismissal.

    Expected October/November 2013

Early conciliation to come into forceFrom April 2014 before lodging a claim to the Tribunal all claimants will need tonotify Acas first, where conciliation will be offered. If conciliation is unsuccessful

within the set period the claimant can proceed to lodge a tribunal claim.

    April 2014

Flexible workingThe Government proposes to extend the right to request flexible working to allemployees and remove the current statutory procedure for considering requests.Instead employers will have a duty to consider all requests in a reasonable manner;employers will have the right to refuse requests on business grounds.

    Spring 2014

Flexible parental leaveUnder this new system parents will be able to choose how they share the care of theirchild during the first year after birth. Mothers will still take at least the initial two

week following the birth, following that they can choose to end the maternity leaveand the parents can opt to share the remaining leave as flexible parental leave.

Also under this new shared parental leave it is proposed to allow the husband, civilpartner or partner of the pregnant woman the right to unpaid time off to attend upto 2 ante-natal appointments.

    2015

Parental leave extended to 18The right to unpaid Parental Leave will be extended to parents of any child underthe age of 18 years.

    Mechanicsto be exemptfrom CPC

A rule forcing mechanics to pay for professionaldriver training is to be abolished saving UKbusinesses 29m, Roads Minister StephenHammond has announced.

Under current European rules, anyone whodrives heavy goods vehicles or buses mustcomplete a Certificate of ProfessionalCompetence. However around 76,000 peoplewho drive them for short distances, for thepurposes of delivering or repairing them, willsoon be exempt.

Stephen Hammond said driver training isessential to ensure that lorry and bus drivers

keep their skills up to scratch and keep ourroads safe. But making the trainingcompulsory for those who only drive HGVs overshort distances because they are deliveringthem for repair or testing is costly and time-consuming. That is why we are making theseexemptions which will reduce costs andadministration for businesses.

Two exemptions, made following aconsultation, will be implemented this autumn.

The first exemption benefits both mechanicsand valets delivering vehicles. It applies as longas no goods or passengers are being carried, the

vehicle is not being used for hire or reward, driving HGVs or public service vehicles is notthe drivers main job and the vehicle remainswithin 50 kilometres of the drivers base.

The second exemption benefits mechanics it applies as long as the vehicle is being drivento an official test at a VOSA or authorised testingfacility.

The exemptions will result in around 76,000individuals, whose main job is not driving, being exempt from the requirement to have anadditional driving test and additional trainingevery year.

Truck drivers who held their HGV licences

before September 2009 will have to complete 35hours of training by 10 September 2014.

Boris hits HGVs withdaily chargeThe Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has outlined new proposals to

remove the most unsafe lorries from the capital and make roads safer

    for cyclists.

A consultation will belaunched on whetherhe should use his

powers to levy asubstantial SaferLorry Charge on anyHGV which is notfitted with basicsafety equipment to

protect cyclists. The consultation will begin in early2014.The proposed London Safer Lorry Charge would not

cover buses, smaller commercial vehicles, cars ormotorbikes.

Along with Transport Minister Stephen Hammond,Johnson also announced a joint TfL/Department forTransport Industrial HGV Task Force of additional

police officers and Vehicle and Operator Services Agency(VOSA) staff to enforce the regulations againstconstruction HGVs and a review by the DfT of nationalexemptions allowing some vehicles to operate without

side-guards. The DfT will review the way regulationsapplying to specialised mobile equipment such asmobile cranes are enforced. In addition, the DrivingStandards Agency will consult the industry about

whether to include mandatory training for HGV driverson cyclists as part of Driver CPC.

Industry bodies criticised the proposals and said thatcyclists need to play their part too in improving roadsafety. The Freight Transport Association said the

majority of HGV operators are already working to thehighest safety standards and there has been hugeinvestment by the freight industry to ensure that

vehicles are fitted with basic safety equipment, withmany going above and beyond the legal requirements.

Jack Semple of the Road Haulage Association alsocriticised the Safer Lorry Charge: there will be manycomplications, few benefits and TfLs resources wouldbe much better spent on other initiatives. However, the RHA said that it is broadly comfortable withthe review of Construction and Use regulations on

    side-guards.

    Cycling accidents

Between 2008 and 2012, HGVs were involved in53% of London cyclist deaths despite making uponly 4% of the traffic. They have been involved in

four of the six cyclist deaths in London so far thisyear.

Of the nine cyclist deaths involving HGVs in2011, seven involved construction lorries. Undernational legislation, many HGVs are fitted withsidebars or low skirts which protect cyclists from

being dragged underneath the vehicle and crushed. However, construction lorries, tipper trucks, waste

vehicles, and certain other HGVs are exempt fromthese and other safety requirements. StephenHammond said I have also committed to review

vehicle regulations to ensure there are nounjustified exemptions from safety standards and, together with the Mayor, will press the EU toimprove vehicle safety designs as soon as possible.

BAR offers industry-wide free legal adviceIn response to some recent reports of removal companies getting into legal difficulties,

BAR, in partnership with Backhouse Jones, has extended its free legal helpline services.

These additional services come into effect immediately.

Commercial vehicle market stabilisesThe recent rise in truck volumes is being linked tothe new Euro 5 and 6 registrations. Total regist-rations of commercial vehicles in the UK were stablein July at 22,211 (-0.6%) with 177,708 registrationsover the year-to-date, a 6.5% rise, according to theSociety of Motor Manufacturers and Traders(SMMT).

Van registrations dipped 2.6% in the month to18,417 units, but remained 9.3% up for the Jan-uary-July period with 151,594 registrations. Truck

demand rose 10.3% in the month, beginning to turnaround the 7.8% decline over the year to date.

Julys commercial vehicle market performed onpar with 2012 levels as rising truck volumes helpedto offset a dip in van sales, said Nigel Base ofSMMT. Weve been expecting a rise in truck

volumes as the Euro 5/6 issue comes to a head. InJuly, trucks rose 10.3% continuing the trend begun amonth earlier a momentum that should continueto the end of the year. Van registrations havefluctuated through the year with dips followingsizable peaks in demand. We are confident that the

van market will end the year strongly, up 9.2% on2012, topping 261,000 units.

15 minutes free legal adviceBackhouse Jones will now offer any removal company,

whether they are a BAR Member or not, 15 minutesfree legal advice if the removal company:

    (a) is considering terminating their agreement withany membership organisation or body and needsadvice on how to do this properly and not leavethemselves legally exposed, or

    (b) if they have terminated their agreements with any

membership organisation and now find themselves inlegal difficulties.

Reduced rate full legal serviceShould this 15 minutes advice be insufficient to resolvethe matter Backhouse Jones will offer a reduced rate

full legal service in agreement with the removalcompany.

Launching this service, Steven Meyerhoff (pictured),Director at Backhouse Jones Solicitors, said: Weconsider it extremely important for removal companiesto be members of a professional industry association sothat they can be sure they have expert business support. If removal companies are considering terminating

their links or have ended their relationship with amembership association and are now in legaldifficulties, it is vital that they obtain good legal adviceand we fully support this initiative by BAR to supportthe industry. BAR Director General, Stephen Vickers, considers that BAR has a responsibility to its

Membership to offer a wide range of benefits andservices that should and will continue to only beavailable to its Members. However, because of its

position as a leading national professional trade body,

it also has a wider responsibility to the removalsindustry as a whole. The Board of BAR is currentlyconsidering other ways that they can support the widerindustry, he told R&S.

Removal companies who require this service should, in the first instance, telephone 01254 828 300 or email Steven Meyerhoff

at [email protected], quoting the BAR legal helpline and this offer.

    BIFM scrapsmerger

In a surprise move, the British Institute of

Facilities Management (BIFM) has decided towithdraw from the merger discussions it hadentered into with Asset Skills, CSSA and FMA.

This decision was taken at a BIFM Boardmeeting in August at which the potential merger

was thoroughly reviewed. It was felt that thecurrent merger plans were not in the best interestof BIFM and its members at this time. GarethTancred, Chief Executive of the BIFM, said TheBoards first priority is to ensure decisions suchas these are in the best interest of its members.Right now it has been decided that we must

focus on the delivery of our strategy andcontinuing our current success. This does notrule out any future discussions about mergerand acquisition opportunities and nor does itrule out working with other like-minded bodies

for the benefit of our members, the FM profess-ion and the wider support services industry.

    Texting driverkills couple

A lorry driver who killed a couple in an accidentlast year has been sentenced to more than fiveyears in jail.

Ethen Roberts, who is in his forties, had sentand received dozens of messages from a femalefriend leading up to the accident, all while histachograph showed he had been driving.Evidence showed Roberts had received a text

message one minute and sixteen seconds beforethe crash on the M62 near Huddersfield, whenhis HGV jack-knifed and fell onto a car carryingMark and Tamsie McHale on their way toManchester airport.

Judge Geoffrey Marson concluded that theevidence clearly showed Mr Roberts had aregular habit of reading, composing andsending text messages while driving, and thatMr Roberts had received a text message veryshortly before the collision and was eitherreading it or composing a reply when he lostcontrol of his vehicle.

If ever a case demonstrated the obviousdanger of that, this is it, he said, and thedanger in doing that was obvious and it createda grossly avoidable distraction. Robertsadmitted causing death by dangerous driving.

Immigration andemigration dipsThe latest data from the Office for National Statistics show that there

was a net flow of 176,000 long-term migrants to the UK in 2012, down

    from 215,000 in 2011.

HMRC cracks down on fuel fraud

Reminder: Minimum wage rates are going up

A 51-year-old man had been arrested andinterviewed by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)officers after the discovery of a fuel laundering

plant in County Down. The plant, capable of producing around 250,000

litres of illicit fuel a year, was hidden in farm build-ings in the Banbridge area. It was dismantled andmore than 1,000 litres of fuel, a fuel storage tankand pump and 1,000 litres of waste were seized.

John Whiting of the Criminal Investigationdepartment at HMRC said our activity over the last

few weeks has stopped a large amount of launderedfuel entering the legitimate market, preventingfurther revenue loss and helping our legitimatetraders fight unfair competition. The waste

products from the laundering process can causeconsiderable damage to the environment.

Laundered fuel is red (or green) diesel, whichhas been filtered through chemicals or acids toremove the Government marker. The chemicalsand acids remain in the fuel and damage fuel

pumps in diesel cars. Red diesel is marked gas oilor a rebated fuel for use in agricultural machineryand not for use in road vehicles. Green diesel is theRepublic of Ireland equivalent of the UKs reddiesel.

More recently, in August two men from Worcesterwere arrested on suspicion of selling anddistributing illegal fuel and evading excise duty ofaround 1m.

    US cities attractUK propertybuyers

With the US economy apparently on the mend, international property buyers are turning theirattention even to the hardest hit parts of the

market.According to the Rightmove overseas search

report, searches for property in Detroit, whichdeclared bankruptcy in the summer, haveincreased by nearly 500%. Searches for propertyin Wayne County were up by almost the sameamount, while searches for Michigan more thandoubled.

Shameem Golamy, Head of RightmoveOverseas, said the interest was not just fromonline curtain twitchers, as enquiries aboutDetroit investment property increased 205% since

July 2012 meaning there are serious buyers ready

to invest. Charles Purdy, Managing Director ofSmart Currency Exchange, said Detroitinvestment was even more enticing for UK buyersgiven gains for sterling in the summer.

Fall in UK working age householdsTheres been a surprise drop in the number of

working age households in the UK, according todata from the Office of National Statistics.

The number of households containing at leastone person aged 16 to 64 fell by 165,000 between2012 and 2013 whilst the number of householdsnot containing anyone aged 16 to 64 increased by225,000. The shift in the demographics is partly

down to the ageing of the post second world warbaby boomers.

In April to June 2013 there were 20.4 millionhouseholds in the UK containing at least one

person aged 16-64. Of these households, 11.0million (54.0%) were classed as working, a further5.9 million (28.8%) were classed as mixed, andfinally 3.5 million (17.1%) were classed as

workless. The ONS said there were declines in the number

of single-person and lone parent households, whilethe number of couples with children increased.

Analysts said that pressure on incomes and risinghousing costs were one likely explanation for thetrend, as lower numbers of people can afford tomove out on their own.

Explaining NESTin videoOne year afterthe launch of

automaticenrolment, UKemployer pensionscheme NEST haslaunched a video tohelp answer questions about what it means forindividual contributors.

Graham Vidler of NEST said: People wevespoken with in our research consistently ask thesame three questions about automaticenrolment. They want to know: how much will itcost me, how much will I get back at the end,and whos looking after my money?

Although opt out rates are currently far lowerthan predicted, our research suggests consumersstill need reassurance and want to understandhow the changes will affect them. Nearly threequarters say they are more likely to opt out ifthey dont get enough information on whatautomatic enrolment is all about. The only

factor more likely to influence their decision isaffordability.

NEST views the next 2.2 million people due tobe enrolled next year as a wake-up call aboutthe challenge ahead. As an industry we cannotafford to be complacent about opt out levels.

We must find out what consumers really want to

BREAKING NEWS BREAKING NEWS BREAKING NEWS

Housing market in recovery modeThe UK housing market continued to recover over the summer, with Rightmoves email leads to agents and

    developers up 17% year-to-date compared with 2012.

Rightmove confirms that buyer demand for residential

properties is now on the increase and is expected to

increase further when Help to Buy starts assisting

purchasers via a mortgage guarantee scheme in January

2014. Miles Shipside, Director and Housing Market

Analyst at Rightmove, said Flats are most in demand by

first-time buyers and buy-to-let investors and we have

seen prices for this property type hit their highest ever

level as supply fails to keep up with an increase in

demand at the bottom of the market.

According to Halifax, there was an overall increase in

the number of homeowners giving instructions to selltheir properties in the last few months. House prices in

May-July were 2.1% higher than in the preceding three

months (February-April) and increased by 0.9% in July.

Halifax noted that Bank of England statistics showed that

the number of mortgage approvals for house purchases

a leading indicator of completed house sales in the

second quarter of 2013 was 6% higher than in the first

    quarter.

This UK-wide trend was also reported by the Office for

National Statistics, which recorded UK house prices

had increased by 3.1% in the 12 months to June 2013, upfrom a 2.9% increase in the 12 months to May 2013. The

year-on-year increase reflected growth of 3.3% in

England and 4.3% in Wales, offset by falls of 0.9% in

Scotland and 0.4% in Northern Ireland. Annual house

price increases in England were driven by London

(8.1%), the West Midlands (3.1%) and the South East

(2.9%). Excluding London and the South East, UK house

prices increased by 1.0% in the 12 months to June

2013. Rising consumer confidence and an improvementin the availability of credit were credited as the key

drivers for UK house price increases in Nationwides

books which estimated that house prices increased by

0.6% in August and were 3.5% higher than August 2012.

North of the Border, the Registers of Scotlandsaid

that from April to June 2013 the total volume of sales was

19,939, an increase of 8.1% on the same quarter the

previous year. Stirling showed the largest percentage fall

in the number of sales with a decrease of 8.7%.

Midlothian showed the largest percentage rise with an

increase of 25.2% in total sales compared to the sameperiod in the previous year. The City of Edinburgh

recorded the highest sales volume with 2,259 residential

house sales, an increase of 11.1% on the previous year.

The average price of a residential property in Scotland

    decreased by 0.3% to 153,102.

    Residential property analysts Hometrackconfirmed that

there was more movement in buying and selling in

England between June and August of this year. By August,

it was taking an average of 8.1 weeks to sell, which is thelowest for the UK housing market since November 2007.

Hometrack said that much of the recent growth in supply

in England was located in the regions outside London

and the South East; firmer pricing levels in the Midlands

and Northern regions are bringing more sellers into the

    market.

Meanwhile, figures from the Land Registryshow

that during May 2013, the latest month for which

figures are available, the number of completed house

sales in England and Wales increased by 19% to 62,651

compared with 52,516 in May 2012. The number ofproperties sold in England and Wales for over 1m

in May 2013 increased by 28% to 740 from 576 in May

2012. According to the Land Registry, in July there

was an annual house price increase of 0.8% which

takes the average property value in England and Wales

to 164,098. The monthly change from June to July

    showed an increase of 1.0%.

BAR teams up with SmartCurrency Exchange

All international removals firms face the costs and risks of doing business in foreign currency.

That is where international payment specialists, Smart Currency Exchange come in.

International payment specialists, Smart CurrencyExchange, have become a BAR National Affiliate to helpBAR Members manage their own international

payments, saving them money through better exchangerates than are available at the banks. At the same time,it will be offering Members financial incentives tointroduce their customers to Smart.

Managing international removals involves a varietyof foreign transactions, including for shipping

container space which is priced and paid for in aforeign currency, says Jana Korpova, Head of BusinessDevelopment at Smart Currency Exchange. We helpremoval firms manage these payments so that theyavoid adverse currency fluctuations, as well as theunnecessary fees they would pay if they used their bankto make these transactions.

If a remover has to pay for containers in a foreigncurrency when they reserve them, when they come tosell that container space, their prices wont take intoaccount exchange rate fluctuation, she explains. Wecan minimise this type of uncertainty by working withclients on a one-to-one basis to provide solutions such

as forward-buying strategies.Smart employees are not paid commission for thecurrency transfers they make on behalf of clients. Theyare rewarded as a team, thereby ensuring a consistentlevel of customer service, whatever the value of acustomers currency transfer.

The other side of the Smart Currency Exchangebusiness model that will be of particular interest to BARMembers is its partnership scheme, which involvesremoval firms acting as introducers for the company. Itis an innovative way of monetising the natural accessthat removal companies have to people moving to anew country with a foreign currency and buying

property abroad. When a removals firm promotes Smart

to their customers (either private individuals orcorporate clients), the introducer earns additionalincome through converted leads they send on.Everyone is a winner! Jana says.

Well-known to international removersSmart Current Exchange is no stranger to theinternational removals industry and the companyunderstands the challenges of the moving industry. It

works in partnership with Rightmove Overseas as therecommended currency exchange specialist partner, and a number of its clients are BAR Members.

Jana says the companys client list includes removalfirms such as Doree Bonner International which is a

Smart introducer and who also use Smarts services fortheir own corporate transactions. We also work withFox Removals and Anglo-Irish firm McCrorysRemovals. In addition, Interdean, part of the Santa FeGroup, recommends our service to all of their onlinecustomers, she says.

Commission for BAR MembersBusiness Development Executive Alex Willson says thatthe majority of the companys business is nowgenerated through customer referrals, as well as

partnerships, such as those with Rightmove Overseas,Overseas Property Professional and A Place in the Sun,

and introducers, including removal companies and anextensive network of overseas property agents.Alex believes that as well as receiving commission,

introducing foreign exchange services to theircustomers will help BAR Members add to their client

value proposition. I understand from our partners thatthe average cost of international removals from the UKis 4,000. With this in mind, a customer who usesSmart to transfer 100,000 into a foreign currencycould save up to 4% compared to their high street bankto make the same transfer. Looking at this another way, using Smart to send their savings abroad, could savecustomers of BAR Members enough to cover orcontribute to the cost of their removals bill! Hopefully,

this concept adds a lot of value to removal firms salesproposition.

We believe that being an Affiliate Member of BARwill help us to better understand how our service can

help firms operating in the overseas removals sector,Alex says. Having access to Members, whether throughevents, magazines or email communication, will allowus to introduce our service to Members properly, as wellas offer them free access to our educationalinformation. We believe that BAR Members will find ourservice helpful and a welcome provider of added value,

whether for their own corporate transactions orrecommending us to their clients.

Our approach has always been to work with ourcustomers, to spend time listening and reallyunderstanding what their objectives are and how they

Its why we offer powerful filters so we can develop aprofile for each individual depot to precisely tailor whatkinds of leads they want to receive.

Over the last nine months, in response to requestsfrom BAR Members, weve improved our filters toprovide even more fine grained control, but wevehad lots of feedback over the summer peak thatdepots wanted the ability to cherry pick leadsoccasionally.

Unclaimed leads are logged by Rightmove whenmovers submit requests for jobs, but there are noremovers operating in that geographic area or, if thereare, their profile excludes the job e.g. because its notdue for a few weeks or involves a long distance move. The new Pick Your Own service means removers cansearch, view and sort all the jobs that have not had aresponse from a remover and then claim it forthemselves.

Rightmoves standard lead service is a pay-per-leadmodel and particularly suited to premium movers asthey limit the number of companies presented toconsumers to a maximum of four BAR Members.

When an unclaimed lead is picked using the newfunctionality however, it gets taken off the marketinstantly so no-one else can access the contact details

a handy feature in a competitive market. Its great to be able to respond quickly to feedback

from our customers and this new functionality reallyhelps to solve problems like finding replacement jobs

for last minute cancellations, securing part loads orfinding return journey jobs to prevent trucks returning

from off-patch empty. Were really excited about the possibilities for BAR

Members and because picked leads are only charged atour base rate, theyre really cost-effective too.

    BAR ServicesBAR Services

BAR Services free direct delivery onlineordering systemIt is always exciting for any supplier to introduce a new product in to the market place but it can also bedone with a little trepidation. However after being tried and tested by BAR Services Directors companies

last year, BAR Services is confident that the new RB flute, now known as BARS flute, is an ideal product

    for the removals industry.

The online sales of packing materials is big businessand is a huge potential revenue stream for BARMembers. BAR Services are pleased to announce thatit has designed a simple and completely free way forMembers to take advantage of this market.Members had previously commented that althoughthey wanted to make the most of this opportunity

they didnt have the time and money to either startfrom scratch or to set up the ecommerce on theirexisting site this can be a complicated and timeconsuming task. In answer to this challenge, BARServices have been working with Open SEO anddeveloped a new packaging module which allowsthem to tap in to this market off the back of the BARServices website.

So how does the new module work? Simply askyour website designer to create a link from yourwebsite to www.barservices.co.uk/association/. Youcan direct your customer by adding Click here to buypacking materials to your home page. If you dontcurrently have a designer, Open SEO can add this

link for you at a cost of from 20 (depending on thework required). Your customer will be directed to anarea of the BAR Services website which will displaytwenty core packing products i.e. Pack 2s, Pack 6s,tape, air bubble.

BAR Services will receive the order and the paymentand will deliver directly to your customer. The BARServices website will be able to track the website theorder came from and allocate commission to thecorrect member. You will be charged a set discountedmembership rate for the materials and thedifferential between this rate and the price paid byyour customer and this commission will be refunded

to you in the form of a quarterly credit note. It reallyis that simple! From the screen grab below you can see the website

module is simple and easy to use as well as being inthe generic BAR branding. The module displays onlythe BAR member logo so your customer will beunaware that they have moved from your companyswebsite (pictured above).

BAR Services are extremely pleased to haveproduced a free of charge and hassle-free opportunityfor Members to benefit from the increased turnoverbrought in from online sales. Some Members, however, still have a preference for an online shop tobe personalised and to fit their existing brand and

corporate image. You may remember that in June2011, BAR Services unveiled a website module thatMembers could buy that allowed their customers tobuy online. Again, designed with Open SEO, theinitial module could be tailored to match the design

of your existing website but it was based on theexisting BAR Services online catalogue. This option isstill available and can be bought from BAR Services. As far as your customer is concerned they are simplyordering directly through you, however, a copy of theorder is received by BAR Services who will thenprocess and deliver the items to your customersaddress. Your customer pays you through yourwebsite and BAR Services invoice for the products in

    the usual way.

This website module includes many extra features: Recently Viewed Products Recently Compared Items New Items Promotional Tool Up-sells in Shopping Cart Cross-sells on product pages Bundled Products Options Send to a Friend Free Shipping Options Auto-generated Site Map Google map

The cost of buying this programme was a one offset-up charge of 550 plus an annual fee of 70.As a hosted web application, ongoing support isnecessary but the annual fee also included searchengine optimisation which is a must for any website.

This online ordering option will appeal to membersto whom the consistency of their companys brand isimportant.

BAR Services feel they have covered all the basesand now have a product that will suit all Membersdependent on their requirements. The new option isfree of charge, negates the need for your ownecommerce, is simple to install and the only effortrequired by you is to add a link to your website. The

original module is ideal for Members who prefer tokeep their own brand on the packing materialsbuying page. There is a 550 charge on this originalmodule but you can control the look of the page aswell as the retail pricing. However, dont forget thisoption is dependent on you having an ecommercewebsite.

With costs rising and the housing market stillsluggish, making the most of other opportunities tobring in income is clearly important. If yourcustomer cant easily buy packing products from youthey are only a click away from Argos and EBay. BARServices are offering a free, easy to use link that tapsin to its pre-existing ecommerce site.

To coin a phrase, they have done the hard work soyou dont have to. If you would like any furtherdetails on how to link free of charge to the BARServices website please contact the sales team on01342 870087 or email [email protected]

Developed by the CMG Council, the CMG MarketingCommittee together with BARs Commercialdepartment, the strategy is designed to promote andraise the profile of the CMG in the marketplace, including both the public and the private sectors. The ultimate aim of the marketing strategy is for theBS 8522 quality standard to become a pre-requisite of

prequalification for tenders and key criteria in theprocurement of commercial moving services in thepublic and private sectors. This will ensure that CMGMembers will be considered as the primary source forclients selecting a reputable commercial removalscontractor.

Overall, the initiatives set out in the new marketingstrategy are likely to help increase membership of theCMG and strengthen the group itself.

InitiativesThe CMG now wields powerful marketing tools. These are underpinned by its up-to-date dedicated

website (www. barcommercialmovinggroup.co.uk) andwill be supported by targeted marketing literature, all ofwhich will raise awareness of the CMGs high standardsand its brand.

A plan is now in place to further develop key corporatealliances to add to the wide range of strong links theCMG has set up with professional industry associations

This month, the CMG will have a stand

at the cross-cutting industry event, Workplace TrendsConference 2013, in London.

In terms of online marketing, so far this year therehas been a steady increase in traffic to the CMG website,

with the number of unique visitors doubling from Juneto August. To help increase traffic and keep the websiteuseful, the CMG plans to add mutually beneficial linksand will also ask Members to link to the site andcontribute content.

CMG Members will also play an important part inrolling out the marketing strategy by being active intheir local markets to promote the CMG, referringclients to the CMG website to help them draw up the

scope of their move. The key marketing messages remain the same,

whether the medium is the Internet, conferences, brochures or word of mouth: all CMG members have acommon aspiration to exceed customer expectations

with their services, through constant dedication toquality and integrity, consistently providing exceptional

levels of service that combine innovation and bestpractice.

Over the course of 2014, the CMGs varied marketinginitiatives will identify the Unique Selling Points of itsMembers as being reputation, experience, security, quality, professionalism, peace of mind, reliability and

predictability. All CMG Members believe that working together is the

best and most efficient way to raise and maintainstandards in the Industry. In the coming months, theambition is that the market will increasinglyunderstand that position and make its procurementdecisions accordingly.
