Celebrating 20 Years of Recycling Excellence

Welcome to our 2019 Recognition issue! The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, Recycling and Resource Management Division celebrated 20 years of recycling excellence by recognizing thirty six extraordinary recyclers for their outstanding waste reduction, reuse and recycling efforts. Award recipients included six individuals, thirteen multi-family properties and seventeen businesses who were recognized at a recognition ceremony on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

The ceremony featured opening remarks by Montgomery County officials Adriana Hochberg, Assistant Chief Administrative Officer and Adam Ortiz, Director, Department of Environmental Protection. David Biderman, Executive Director/CEO of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) delivered the Keynote speech on the state of recycling and markets in the United States.

The “magic” continued throughout the week when the Division visited twelve schools to raise awareness through an educational show entitled “The Three Rs”. Through fun tricks and eye-catching magic, the educational show highlighted the importance of waste reduction and reuse as well as encouraged students to recycle as much as possible both at school and at home. As usual, Rocco the Recycling Retriever made an appearance and closed the show by recapping what can and cannot be recycled encouraging students and staff to “recycle right” by placing only acceptable items in their recycling bins.

The Art of Recycling, Reducing and Reusing

Once again, the Montgomery County’s Recycling and Resource Management Division -RRMD- held its yearly recycling art contest for private and public schools as well as other educational institutions in Montgomery County. This year’s theme “Make Montgomery County Clean, Green and Beautiful. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle More Now” was reflected throughout the entries received by RRMD. A panel of six judges selected fifteen winning entries in three categories that included posters, digital art and sculptures.

Surrounded by the artists and their families, RRMD hosted a recognition ceremony on May 2, 2019 to recognize the winning entries. “Through your artwork, you’ve displayed your knowledge and awareness of how we can reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle everything possible to protect our environment. And tonight, we are here to recognize and celebrate your creativity.” remarked Eileen Kao, Chief of Montgomery County’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Section during the recognition ceremony. Ms. Kao closed her remarks by encouraging attendees to make a difference by keeping Montgomery County clean, green and beautiful for generations to come.
