Here is an interesting story about a kinship parent who recently went through DCS training and was able to save a life because of what she learned.
Savannah Moser, 23, is a new kinship parent in the Tennessee Valley Region. She cares for a young relative along with two young children of her own. At her restaurant job, Savannah noticed a customer who appeared to be struggling. She asked him if he was choking and he shook his head, “yes.” Savannah calmly proceeded to perform the Heimlich maneuver she had learned in DCS CPR/First Aid training and saved this man’s life.
Savannah is described by Misty D’Amico, the Kinship Coordinator in Tennessee Valley, as an “everyday hero,” who manages all her responsibilities, plus two jobs, with “resilience and grace.”
Congratulations, Savannah and thank you for all you do!
We also want to acknowledge George Stephens, a former DCS employee, who is now a resource parent trainer. George taught Savannah these skills.

Shelby County DCS Resource Parent Support staff would like to show appreciation to Traditional Foster Care Resource Parent, Ms. Conner’s home was
opened in January of 2010. Like most resource parents, she first began her
journey believing that she would only foster one or two young, elementary school aged children. However, since that time, she has cared for over 20 children, including sibling groups with as many as five children, as well as a few teenagers!
Ms. Conner usually will not give up on the children, even after their behavior is found to be very challenging. She has stated this is because teens need guidance and support to know that they are loved and cared for unconditionally, just as much as the little babies. She has been a good role model for girls and young ladies and teaches boys and girls how to feel good about themselves and encourage them to set goals and look forward to a great future.

Some of the children, their birth parents and relatives still maintain contact with Ms. Conner as they have established a bond. She reaches out to the Moms and Dads as she has a special way of encouraging them to feel good about being together or at least sharing closer relationships.
Ms. Conner’s assigned RPS FSW Sharon Harris, on behalf of the Department of Children’s Services, appreciates Ms. Conner’s willingness to care for our children by sharing her home, nurturing and her extended support and compassion for children and their relatives. This is what fostering truly is all about!

RPS Staff Bios
Sharon Harris is a native Memphian who has been with the
Department for over 20 years. She began as a Child
Protective Services worker, then worked as a Home Study
Writer and PATH trainer. She has been in the Resource
Parent Support unit for four years. Sharon obtained a B. A.
Degree in Social Work from LeMoyne-Owen College and is
currently enrolled at Memphis Theological Seminary in the
Master of Divinity program. She also enjoys painting and
writing poetry. Her theme in life is, “Do unto others as you
would have them to do unto you”.

PARENTING THE YOUTHFUL OFFENDER
SHELBY REGION~RESOURCE PARENT TRAINING COURSE SCHEDULE This 9-hour class allows resource parents to explore the benefits of fostering a delinquent youth. Participants will gain knowledge helpful in assisting a delinquent youth in addressing challenging behaviors, delinquent behaviors, adolescent development and transitioning to home or independent living placement. This course covers working with birth parents, therefore, you will not be required to take Working with Birthparents.
