RPNsattheconferenceheard
presentationsonCUPEswage
adjustmentbargainingstrategyforRPNs.
RPNsattendingthemeetingalso
lookedatapilotprojectatToronto
EastYorkGeneralHospital,where
amoveawayfromallRNstaffing
toamixofRN,RPNandnon-
regulatedstaffhasseenadropin
patientdeathratesof43%onthe
pilotprojectunits.Nurses
satisfactionisup,mirroring
satisfactionincreasesforpatients
andphysicians.
RPNsdiscussedmalpractice
insurance,whichwillsoonbe
providedbytheCollegeofNurses
ofOntarioasaresultof
amendmentstotheRegulated
HealthProfessionsAct.
Smallgroupdiscussionsdealtwith
theincreasedworkloadforRPNs,
violenceandbargainingobjectives
forthenextroundofprovincial
negotiations.

geographicareas.Northern

TheactionplancallsonCUPEto
putincreasedemphasison
securinggovernmentand
employercommitmentsoffundin
forprofessionaldevelopmentfor
RegisteredPracticalNurses.The
actionplancallsforCUPEto
continuetopushforthefull
utilizationofRPNskillsbyall
hospitalsandforacampaignto
highlightthecontributionRPNs
maketotheirprofessionandto
theircommunities.
CUPErepresents7,000RPNsin65
hospitalsandanother8,000RPNs
inlong-termcareinOntario.
AcrossCanada,CUPErepresents
45,000LPNs/RPNs.200,000of
CUPEsmembersworkin
healthcare,1/3ofourmembers.
TheOntarioCouncilofHospital
Unions/CUPEishalfwaythrough
65localissuearbitration
presentationsonbehalfofRPNs.
CUPEhasprovincialbargaining.Ourcentralissueswereresolved
ina4yearsettlementin2009.
Wageadjustmentswerepartof
localbargaining.
Thearbitrationboardhasbeen
setuptoresolveoutstanding
localissues.
Theunionisseekingtopullup
RPNwagerates.
Itisexpectedthatthearbitration
decisionwillbeissuedinthefall
of2011.
