Dave Smith, who is in his third season at Rensselaer, spent the 12 years prior as the head coach at Canisius College.

Last season, the Engi-neers posted a 10-23-3 overall record, including 7-13-2 in ECAC Hockey play. For the second year in a row, RPI won at nationally-ranked Cor-nell, while sweeping the regular season series with rival Union College. Fresh-man goaltender Owen Savory earned All-Rookie Team honors.

In his first season in Troy, he led the Engineers to a 6-27-4 mark, includ-ing a 4-16-2 record in conference. He picked up first win at the helm on October 21, 2017 – an 8-3 victory at RIT. His first ECAC Hockey win came in dramatic fashion, as the Engineers came back to defeat nationally-ranked Quinni-piac, 5-3. In early February, the Engineers came away with a 2-1 win at then No. 1 Cornell.

Highlights of his time with the Golden Griffins include three straight trips to At-lantic Hockey Championship weekend for the first time in school history, consecu-tive appearances in the title game and the team’s first crown in 2013.

Smith led Canisius to a 21-11-7 overall record in 2016-17, including an 18-4-6 mark in Atlantic Hockey play. The team finished the regular season on a 17-game

unbeaten streak (14-0-3) before falling to Robert Morris in the conference semi-finals.

During the 2012-13 cam-paign, Smith guided Canisius to the program’s first confer-ence title with a 7-2 victory in the Atlantic Hockey Cham-pionship game against Mer-cyhurst and the team’s first appearance in the NCAA Divi-sion I Tournament. The Griffs also finished 19th in the final USCHO.com national poll, marking the program’s highest finish in the national rankings.

Canisius nearly duplicated the feat the following two seasons, advancing to the

2014 Atlantic Hockey title game after eliminating the top two seeds in the con-ference tournament.

The Golden Griffins took second in the league in 2015 – matching the program’s best regular season finish – and making a third straight trip to the semifinals.

In Smith’s first 11 seasons, 186 Griffs earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic ac-colades, including a school-record 23 following the 2013-14 campaign. In ad-dition, five student-athletes were named the Atlantic Hockey Top Scholar Athlete for owning the highest GPA in the league. The hockey program consistently had the top GPA of any team at Canisius, including a 3.31 cumulative mark following the 2015-16 academic year.

Prior to his time at Canisius, Smith was an assistant coach at Bowling Green and Miami, where he coached or recruited two Hobey Baker Award Finalists, four Players of the Year, two Rookies of the Year, 22 all-league award winners and three Terry Fla-nagan Award winners for perseverance.

The Arthur, Ontario, native was also in-strumental in guiding Mercyhurst to two league championships and two NCAA Di-vision I Tournament appearances in three seasons.

Smith graduated from Ohio State Uni-versity in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism/public relations and was a four-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes. He was team captain as a junior and cho-sen as the team’s MVP as a senior, lead-ing the Buckeyes with 41 assists and 63 points. He finished his career with 140 points, ranking 14th all-time.

Smith spent six seasons in profes-sional hockey, including five in the Ameri-can Hockey League and the International Hockey League, with a brief period in the East Coast Hockey League. He was under contract with the New York Rangers in 1994-95.

Smith has spent his summers coach-ing young players and adults as a director and head instructor at numerous camps across the United States and Canada.

He and his wife, Susan, have two daugh-ters, Ellis and Kylie. Susan is a professor at RPI, Ellis is a goaltender for the ice hockey team at Manhattanville and Kylie plays softball at Nazareth.

SLU STREAKRPI extended its winning streak against St. Law-rence to four games with its 3-0 shutout on Janu-ary 4 ... It is the longest such streak since 2012-14 and only the fourth winning streak of four or more games in the series history.

FIFTH SWEEPRPI’s North Country sweep was just the fifth since the Engineers started making the annual trip to Clarkson and St. Lawrence in the 1951-52 season ... The previous four-point weekends came in 1977-78, 1984-85, 2004-05 and 2012-13.

POWER UPAfter the Engineers scored just 14 power play goals all of last season, they have already netted 11 in 2019-20 through 21 games.

OT-WINNERFreshman Tristan Ashbrook’s overtime-winning goal against Brown on December 7 was RPI’s first since Jake Marrello beat Army on January 5, 2019 ... In similar fashion, the Engineers tied the game late against the Black Knights, before coming away with the extra frame victory.
