The Most Common Uses

Ankalok fully interlocking precast concrete revetment embodies a unique doubleanchor head shape which ensures that each block in a revetment is positivelyinterlocked with the six surrounding units. Tapered sides provide for the articulationof the interlocked units to a minimum 0.5m radius. Following installation when thecells and joints between blocks have been filled with gravel/soil additional frictionalinterlock is achieved which helps to provide considerable resistance to verticaldisplacement.

The unique design of Ankalok provides units of exceptionally high handling and inservice strength with the soil/gravel retaining cells being formed by the configurationcreated when the blocks are laid and interlocked together.

The size and spacing of the cells have been designed to afford maximum protectionfrom erosion whilst permitting the release of excess pore water pressure. Abovenormal water level the block cells may be soil filled and seeded thus further aidingstability by root establishment.

Below water level the cells can be filled with a graded gravel to add extra weight tothe armour layer and additional resistance to vertical displacement.

The simple one unit system enhances a straight forward laying procedure whichallows rapid installation without the need for highly skilled labour.

Ankalok is particularly appropriate for sites with difficult access where larger systemssuch as pre-assembled panels needing heavy handling equipment cannot be used.

The Company’s policy is one of continuous development and product improvement. Information contained in this brochure is subject to alteration without notice.

The following information is intended to give guidance in the preliminaryselection of the systems.

RPC Contracts provides design advice and detailed site specific drawings on allcontracts where the Company’s revetment systems are to be used. In addition, contractors will be provided with full working schedules and on-site advice.

Where a flexible concrete revetment is required the actual design will dependupon the application, the nature of the formation and environmentalconsiderations. The areas to be protected should be graded to the correct lineand level, and be free from obstructions.

An adequate toe support will be necessary and advice on selection of suitabledetails should be sought on a site specific basis. The Ankalok interlocking unitsare hand laid directly onto a geotextile membrane.

The design and specification of the underlayers is of fundamental importance tothe stability of the structure as a whole. The need for the geotextile and naturalfilter layers will be determined on a site specific basis. For example, in situationswhere the passage of ground water is likely to cause leaching of fine particles ofbank material, use of a suitable geotextile filter laid directly beneath therevetment is recommended.

Filling and Seeding

RPC Contracts continues to demonstrate a vast amount of expertise in production methods as well as immenseunderstanding of the construction techniques in which the products will be used.

Investment in modern production facilities and adherence to strict quality control procedures ensure that all RPC Contractsproducts are capable of providing the consistency in performance and quality demanded by the building and constructionindustries of today.

Installation

The areas to be protected should be graded to the required line and level and freefrom obstructions. Where a geotextile filter has been specified this should be laidonto prepared subgrade with overlaps of not less than 300mm.

Following the provision of suitable toe support, the Ankalok blocks are then laid incourses to a straight line working away from the toe beam. The first two coursesshould be laid simultaneously to ensure that the correct spacing and interlock isachieved. It should be noted that the blocks are not intended to butt tight at theends but to have an open joint of approximately 10mm.

Following installation of the first two courses it is advisable to set string linesperpendicular to the toe at approximately 6m centres thus maintaining a constantcourse length and ensuring that the revetment remains square and uniform.

On completion of installation the open cells and joints of the revetment should befilled with the material relative to the nature of the aplication. Below normal waterlevel this may take the form of angular gravel, suggested grading of which is 10 -15mm. Above water level the cells may be filled with selected top soil and sownwith a seed mixture suitable to the location. (Ref. CIRIA R116).

Additional Anchoring

Additional anchorage of revetment may be provided by the installation of 40mmsquare timber or 25mm diameter mild steel pegs driven through selected blockcells. Where it is difficult to provide a satisfactory toe support at the base of therevetment additional restraint can be provided along the top of the revetment byinstalling timber or steel pegs at one per block i.e. 0.4m centres.
