MEET OF NOVITIA TE BATCH 1979The 3rd meeting of the Novitiate batch 1979 from three Provinces - HAZ, MAP and RAN took placeat Loyola Kunkuri on May 26. 10 members out of 12 were present. To the joy and inspiration of the group,Fr. Sylvanus Kiro, our Novice Master too was present with us bearing with all fatigue and odds of a longjourney. A short prayer led by Fr. Cyril Toppo, the coordinator set the tone of our sharing. Each one tooktime to share freely his experiences of his life as a Jesuit. We listened to one another's challenges, joys andsorrows faced in life - personal, ministerial and community. As it became an occasion to return to thefoundational experience in the early stage of our formation, we felt that the initial flame of our Jesuitvocation deep within which in course of years has been strengthened to a great extent, is capable to"enkindle other fires". It indeed mutually reaffirmed, supported and encouraged us all as friends in theLord in carrying out the Father's mission through Jesus the Lord filled with zeal and enthusiasm.Fr. Raymond Kerketta presided over the Eucharist celebrated before lunch, sharing to be resumed in theafternoon. The message of the readings that came to us during the Eucharist was very significant:The Triune God delights in each of us. The abiding presence of the Spirit is always with us to lead andguide us. Fr. Cyril, summing up the sharing underlined that a sense of companionship and solidaritybecame real every time the group came together. The group decided to come together again after two years.

Thanks you, Fr. Rector, Fr. Minister and all the friends in the Loyola community for your warm welcomeand hospitality during our stay with you.

Kanke ParishThe Easter time family blessing was completed by13 May. The last ones were the two families inRarha, some 15 km on the Ranchi-Patratu road. These are the only Catholic families in the GELdominated village. They were very happy to welcomeus - two St. Anne Sisters, Fr. Henry Barla andmyself. On 19 May, I together with Fr. Albinus Tete

and Raphael Soy made a trip to Pathalgaon fora short gathering with our 6 fellow Jubilarians ofMadhya Pradesh Province. As we met after a longgap, some of us had hard time to recognize oneanother. Although it was a very hot day, ourgathering was an enjoyable one. We dispersed earlynext morning, perhaps never to see one another inthis globe.

On 26 May night, probably after 1.00 a.m, somethieves broke in into the Kanke church. WhenI opened the church at 5.00 in the morning, I wasgreatly shocked. The side door on the north was openand the steel almirah, where mikes, cables, cordlessmike receivers and other accessories were kept, wasmissing. Also an altar cross, some flower vessels, twocandle-stands and two donation boxes were missing. The battery, used for the emergency light, was not inits usual place. In this confusing situation we had ashort Mass. After the Mass, we found the almirahin the field on the west just outside the boundarywall of St. Anne's convent. It had been forcefullyopened and items were left scattered. One of themike set boxes was found still further, close toSunder Nagar. I informed some of the parishioners -Catholic Sabha President, treasurer and others. They came immediately. About 10-15 of us went tothe police station and gave a report. The policecame at noon around 12.00. We were allowed tocollect whatever was left. Missing items are mainly2 cordless mikes, 3 ordinary mikes, 1 donation box, some flower vessels and cash from donation boxes. There is no clue yet as to who are responsible forthis theft.

Rome

31 May was the last day of the regular classes ofthe current academic year of Gregorian University. However, 15 May was set aside for the Holy Massand the University Fest to celebrate the successfulconclusion on the academic year. This time theworkload was a bit more on me. Apart fromplanning the details of the liturgical celebrationsas the Chaplin, I had the responsibility of animatingthe students to come forward not only with somecultural items, but also with some internationalculinary. Anyway, the staff and the studentscollaborated in an exemplary team spirit to make theUniversity Fest a community event. The Eucharisticcelebration in the Church of St. Ignatius waspresided over by H.L. Mons. Gerhard L. Müller,Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine ofFaith. The Holy Mass was followed by a shortfelicitation program during which some emeritusProfessors were honored and the best students wereawarded medals. During the cultural program, probably for the first time, an Indian group presenteda cultural item with full gusto - a Goanparoldy, inwhich Suman and Sylverius actively participatedalong with other friends from Goa and Karnataka.Later, even Justin and George Kerketta joined thegroup with great enthusiasm.

George Kerketta was here with us in the GregorianJesuit community almost for one week. At the end ofhis stay, he seemed to be happy and pleased with theoutcome of his visit to different Agencies regardingthe Projects of Ranchi Province. Linus and Justintook good care of him during his stay. During thosedays, Rev. Mother Linda Mary Vaughan was alsoin Rome along with her Counselor Sr. Claire. Thepresence of Mother Linda, George Kerketta andGeroge Valentine Kerketta from Switzerlandprovided us with an apt opportunity to cometogether for an Eucharistic celebration followedby dinner - a fruitful gathering of brothers andsisters from Ranchi in Rome!

On 19 May, Justin left for India for awell-deserved holiday time. We were glad to seehim off because he was going to represent us - Suman,Sylverius, Linus and Prem - during the ProvinceMeet. Before he left for India, he had the goldenopportunity to meet the Holy Father on 16 Mayalong with a group of Radio Vatican Collaborators.Along with other priests, Justin concelebrated withthe Holy Father in the beautiful Chapel of CasaSanta Martha, where the Holy Father is residingfor the moment. As usual, the Holy Father met eachone personally. Justin was extremely happy andenthusiastic to tell the Holy Father that he too wasa Jesuit from Ranchi Province. He was quick torequest the Holy Father for his blessings and specialprayers for the Ranchi Province. In the similarmanner, his colleague, Sr. Usha Manorama Tirkey,a Ranchi St. Anne Sister, too met the Holy Fatheron 21 May. Her meeting with the Holy Father wasremarkable for our St. Anne's Sisters because shepresented to him the framed photos of theirFoundress Mother Bernadette and Mother Cecilia.A historical event indeed for both Justin and Usha!

After the exams, Suman and Sylverius plan tojoin a group of Jesuits from Collegio Bellarmino tovisit some of the important Ignatian places in Spain. At the end of their pilgrimage, they will participate inthe priestly ordination of one of their Bellarminofriends. Later, both of them plan to go to differentplaces for their summer ministry. Linus will leave forIndia on 27 June. Two days later, I will leave forNew York and come to Ranchi during the third weekof July. During our stay in Ranchi, both Linus andmyself are supposed to organize a conference onthe Ongoing Formation in Faith-Hope-Charity andVatican II. We hope for the best!
