It is certainly evident that the seasons are changing – cooler air, changing leaves and darkness comes
much earlier! As the weather is getting cooler, please remember the students do go outside each day for
recess as long as the temperature is above 40 degrees. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately
for the weather and check lost and found often; we have a wealth of clothing already. We will place our
Lost and Found out during the Parent/Teacher Conferences on November 4th. Please make sure you check
through the lost and found on this date, as we will be donating all of our Lost and Found items to a needy
charity on November 5th.
I would like to take a moment to thank all our parent volunteers who commit their time to our cafeteria
during the day. This group of individuals supports our students by handing out needed materials, talking to
the students during lunch and ensuring that tables are cleaned up by the students at the end of their lunch.
We are SO appreciative of this support!! If you would like to volunteer and be in the cafeteria, please
contact Mr. Single by phone (410-273-5536) or by email ([email protected]).
Please make sure your child keeps all toys, including small stuffed animals and playground equipment at
home. If a child brings in a toy, the teacher will contact you with a reminder that toys must stay at home.
If a child brings in a toy again, the teacher will contact the parent to come to school to pick up the toy. If a
child brings in a toy for a 3rd time and all other subsequent times, the toys will be placed in a “June Box”
and a parent or guardian will need to pick them up on the last day of school.
There are many exciting events coming up in November and December. Please make sure you take time

Websites Worth Visiting!
Pre-K parents, please check out these sites.
Each one provides fun ways that will engage
your young learner, while practicing skills that
we focus on throughout the school year. When
sharing the sites with your child you should
find that he/she is familiar with some of the
games. We do interact with the games in class
as well!

2019-2020 Kindergarten
It has been an amazing first quarter in Kindergarten. Thank you to all the families
that have worked on completing the Homework Calendar! After analyzing the
beginning of year assessments, we are starting our regrouping for Comprehension
Strategy Instruction (CSI /Reading. Please feel free to connect with your child's reading
teacher when you have questions.
We would like to remind you of a couple of things as the days get colder. 1-Please
send sneakers in backpacks daily for students to wear to recess and P.E. They do not get
to participate if they do not have the correct footwear. 2-Dressing in layers helps with
the fluctuation in temperatures throughout the day. It is a great idea to send your child
with a light jacket they can put on in the classroom in addition to their heavy coats when
it is cold outside.
Also, please continue to work on letter sounds, sight words, and numbers with your
children as learning is going to continue to add complexity throughout the
year. Keeping a stash of flashcards in your car to practice when traveling about is a
great way to practice in short time frames. Another thing you can work on with your little
ones is tying their shoes. We are so ecstatic when students can tie their own shoes!
As the year turns toward the holidays, we want to tell you how grateful we are for
each day we share with your children. They bring the sunshine to our hearts every
day. Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday later this month!
The Kindergarten Team
We have been hard at work in first grade!
We are starting Topic 3 in math and we are working on using strategies to add and
subtract. In reading, we are working on our Teamwork unit. We are using many
important elements of teamwork in our classrooms! In Writing, we are becoming authors
of personal narratives. In Science, we are becoming scientists while learning about
solids, liquids and gases.
Also, we had a special visit from Mrs. Ruff to teach us about how to keep our bodies
healthy by avoiding tobacco. Many of us were in shock of how much our lungs can be
damaged by tobacco!
Please be sure to read to your child and listen to your child read to you each night.
Reading at home will help your child work on skills learned at school and also help them
grow as a reader. As always, thank you for your support from home!
The Second Grade Team
Miss Serrapere, Mrs. Nasuta and Mrs. Lewis
Hello, Roye Williams families! It’s hard to believe it is already November! Time is flying by so quickly! As we move forward into the holiday season, please remind your children to follow the three Core Values of being safe, respectful, and reflective everywhere on school property. Please ask your child to explain them to you!
The Second Grade students have been hard at work learning strategies for adding and subtracting. We will continue to apply these strategies as we move forward through the rest of our units. Upcoming skills also include solving two-step problems and reasoning about them, telling time to the nearest five minutes, and solving problems with coins and dollar bills. Math homework will continue to be assigned each night, and parents are encouraged to discuss the day’s learning with their child. Please contact his or her teacher if you have any concerns or questions.
In C.S.I. (reading), students have been reading various texts to learn how communities work together to benefit individuals and society. In our next unit, Creative Thinkers, students will develop an understanding of the concept of creativity by reading a fable and discussing the characteristics of the main character. Students will also identify the character’s challenge and response to the challenge by identifying traits of creative thinkers. Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes each night and discuss what he or she has read afterwards.
Each class is using the Class Tag online system for sharing classroom information and events. It is also a great way to communicate with your child’s teachers. If you have not yet joined your child’s class, please contact his or her teacher for instructions.
In October, our students enjoyed a fun field trip to Port Discovery! Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones for supporting us on the trip! We hope you had a great time, too!
We have many great things planned for our Second Graders and we look forward to a school year of fun and learning!
It has been a wonderful start to the year with our third
graders. We have been learning a lot of new things,
reviewing our expectations and core values, and having a
great first quarter. We are so proud of these hard-working
kiddos!
We have completed our first three topics in Math. We
are beginning topic 4 (Use Multiplication to Divide: Division
Facts) and continuing with topic 5 (Fluently Multiply and
Divide Within 100) and topic 6 (Connect Area to
Multiplication and Addition).
We completed our first theme in Reading (CSI), which
was Relationships. We are now in our second theme, which is
Discoveries and then will move into our third theme, which is
Determination. Please make sure that your student is reading
at least 20 minutes each night to build their reading skills. Students should be choosing
books that are on their lexile level. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher to find
out your child’s reading level.
We have just completed our first Writing unit and are working on publishing our final
drafts of our Narrative writing. We will then begin our Persuasive (Opinion) writing unit.
We have just completed our first Social Studies unit, which is Citizenship and
Communities. We are currently working in our first Science unit, which is Earth and Space
Science. The students are enjoying learning about different weather tools and their
impacts on predicting weather.
Just a reminder that conferences are right around the corner on November 4th.
Your child’s teacher will be sending home a reminder of your conference time. Please
contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting with
you and discussing your students’ progress so far this year! Refer to contact information
below to contact your child’s teacher.

FOURTH GRADE
Our 4th graders have been hard at work these past few months!
In science, we are using hot wheel cars and building ramps to test potential and
kinetic energy. In social studies, we learned all about the Eastern Woodland Indians and
what life was like for them. Students were able to create an online presentation and skit
about their findings. In reading, we are finishing up our “Actions Speak Louder Than
Words” unit. We read a novel and used our laptops to collaborate with others. In writing,
we are working hard on our Narrative stories. The students writing stamina has been
amazing and their hard work has made their stories incredible! In math, we finished up
topic 3 which was all about multiplying 2, 3, and 4-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. We
learned many different strategies to help students figure out what works best for them!
We are looking forward to all of the exciting things to come this year!
Miss Baker, Miss Mammarella, and Miss Thomas
In CSI (Comprehension Reading Instruction), we have been reading stories about characters and individuals who have made a
difference in other people lives. Students are learning to choose books
that will build strong individual reading skills. Students have been
working hard on creating Personal Narratives and we will be starting
Research Reports in our next writing unit. In Math we have been working
on multiplying whole numbers and are headed into working with decimals.
• Parent conferences will occur on November 4th. These
conferences are with your child’s homeroom teacher. Be on the
lookout for a Conference Appointment Reminder with your
specific date and time.
• Be on the lookout for your child’s Tuesday Folder with all-
important paperwork, which needs to return to school each
week.
• We will be sending home Harford Glen information near the end
of this month. If you have any questions about the
information sent home, please contact your homeroom teacher.

Creative Arts Team (CATs)
Music, Art, Media, and Physical Education
Music
Our Winter concert is scheduled for December 12, 2019 and the Spring concert will be on May 14, 2020. Both concerts are at 6:00 p.m. and will be held at Aberdeen High School. All music students will be performing with their ensemble so please put it on your calendar. Further information will be sent home this month.
We will be emphasizing musician’s behavior this year. Rehearsal Etiquette is important and helps utilize
the little time we have together to its fullest. Here are some guidelines for the student musicians:
• Be sure to only talk when it is appropriate, not while the director is speaking, or the group is performing.
• Have all materials that you need before the rehearsal begins and be ready to go when the rehearsal starts.
• If you have a question, wait until there is a natural pause in the rehearsal. Always raise your hand.
• Every rehearsal has a lot of stopping and restarting. It is during these in-between times that the director or members will want to evaluate and describe the things that went well or need to be fixed. It makes sense that there is no talking during this time.
• When other sections are rehearsing, please listen and watch what they are doing. You will probably have to do the same thing yourself. Do not talk or disrupt. This is disrespectful to both the leader and the other performers.
• Mark or make note of important things that the director or other members point out so you will remember it next time. It is a waste of time to go back and relearn what you have already learned.
This year in third grade music, students will be playing recorders. We would like for all students to have
their own recorders for sanitary purposes and so that each student can have a recorder that is theirs forever. Third grade will be starting recorders by the end of January. We are asking that each third grader have their recorder and bring it to their music class by January 31st, 2020. We suggest the Yamaha 3-piece recorder. The average cost is between $5.00-$10.00. More information will be sent home concerning the recorders as the school year progresses.
We are excited to see the music students progress this year and thank you all in advance for your support.
As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you.

Art
The school year is well underway now. Thank you all for your support. Please continue to send in your donations of good “junk”. We can always use home and garden type magazines, leftover scrap paper, buttons, etc. We are in need of some zip-loc baggies of various sizes and glue sticks. Kindergarten- Kindergarten students are learning about the Artist Mondrian and his use of line and color. They are learning to identify horizontal and vertical lines, the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and to create AB patterns. First Grade and Second Grade- We are wrapping up a unit on paper sculpture. Students have learned nine different techniques to turn flat paper into 3-dimensional forms. The first and second graders have enjoyed demonstrating their creativity and using their imaginations to create paper sculptures. Third Grade- The third graders are learning how to create depth in a landscape drawing. Students are learning to identify foreground, middleground, and background. These compositions are very detailed and will take multiple art classes to complete. These landscapes will eventually be painted with tempera cake paint. Fourth Grade and Fifth Grade- Fourth and Fifth grade students are showing grit and persevering with some challenging origami designs. Many students were surprised
when Mrs. Price admitted she dislikes origami and always found it challenging as a child. After many years of student requests, Mrs. Price has decided to attempt an origami project with her students. We are creating modular designs that demonstrate an understanding of radial symmetry.

RWES Health Suite
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. We want our student happy and health to grow and learn,
and to exceed in all new challenges. The collaborations between Health Suite (HS) with parents,
students, staff, and faculty is an essential component to ensure optimal guidance for our students,
because healthy students are better learners.

Zaiden in Ms. Richardson’s kindergarten class was the first student to turn in the “30 Book Challenge” he picked up on Back to School Night. Way to go Zaiden! Families, remember, there is not a time limit. Your child can return the 30 Book Challenge to Mrs. Morris in room 204 as soon as he or she completes it for recognition and a reward. If your child did not pick up a copy of the challenge, it is not too late. They can get started today by reading books that fit each of the genre on the list.
November is “National Family Literacy Month” organized by the National Center for Families Learning. The Center would like to shed a light on the value of learning together. Our students have been working SO hard to earn SOAR tickets this first quarter and have even had the chance to trade in their tickets for personal rewards. Students are consistently earning tickets for following our core values; Be Respectful, Be Reflective, Be Safe. Please make sure you are communicating with your child and their teacher through the SOAR booklets that come home each day. Ask your child how they earned a SOAR ticket today and
how they can earn one TOMORROW! 🙂
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS/PARTY INVITATIONS AT SCHOOL Birthday Celebrations with food (cupcakes, cake, donuts, etc.) cannot be held at school. HCPS has a Wellness Policy which can be referenced online @ www.hcps.org. If you choose, you may send in pencils, stickers, etc. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are planning to send in a bag of non-edibles. We respectfully request that birthday/party invitations not be sent to school for either the child or teacher to distribute to other students. This disrupts the educational environment of our school and we would appreciate your cooperation with this important policy. Classroom teachers are looking for parent volunteers to create a class directory to send home to parents in order to send out invites. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to volunteer to create a class directory.
****BUS LOOP REMINDER**** Cars are not allowed in the bus loop from 8:00-9:00 a.m. and 3:00-4:00 p.m. daily. Please adhere to the posted signs and guidelines and use the upper parking lot during these times. Also, please do not park on the RED CURB in front of the school as this is for emergency vehicles only.
Student Pick-Up and/or Changes in Dismissal
Parents are asked to write a note to your child’s teacher if your child’s dismissal procedure is going to change on any particular day. Teachers are instructed to send all students home normally UNLESS there is a note identifying an alternate transportation method. We ask you to not call the school to change dismissal procedures, as we can only take a parent note if they will be riding a different bus. If you are changing your child from bus rider to car rider status for the day, we prefer a note. However, you may do this by phone, but we will NOT make any changes to dismissal procedures after 3:00 p.m. Additionally, in order to have a safe and orderly dismissal, we ask if you are picking up your student early for an appointment that this is done by 3:00 on regular school days or by 12:00 on early dismissal days. Please keep in mind on early dismissal days students are considered absent for the entire day if they do not attend more than 2 hours of the ½ day. Additionally, on regular schedule days, if students are picked up early they will be marked as “early dismissal” on these days. The Maryland Department of Education keeps track of student attendance including tardy and early dismissal. Please help us to ensure students are present for the entire school day. Thank you in advance for cooperation.
