ROYAL CAPE MONTHLY CAPTAIN

Dear members

November is always a big month for Royal Cape: we have the AGM , the anniversary and, this year,

the Cape Town Open. There is a lot happening during the anniversary week and we hope to see

many of you involved. See details on pages 10 and 11 for what is planned.

Because of the scheduling of the Cape Town Open, we have decided to postpone Chairman's

Competition by 2 weeks. This event will now take place on Saturday 6th December, a week after the

completion of the Sunshine Tour event.

The AGM will signal the end of my captaincy, so this is my final letter in the Royal Cape Monthly.

Four years ago, late at night after the Captain's dinner, I was unknowingly ushered into the Royal

Cape captaincy journey when I believed I heard Kit Vaughan ask me (in a quiet voice drowned out

by merry background chatter ) whether I would like to be Eric Clapton.

Admitting that would lead me to where I am here at the end of 2014. Kit quotes from Robert

McCloskey, "I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you

realise that what you heard is not what I meant"

It has been an honour and a pleasure to have captained Royal Cape. I have got to know many of

you and realise that the club is alive with many good people and great characters. Remember our

local talent at the 129th Club dinner?

Particularly pleasing is the ascendancy of strength in league golf, a result of the encouragement

from the club and recent past captains. Making our management and staff feel good has its

rewards and I have seen the board work tirelessly to ensure that Royal Cape Golf Club survives the

challenges at our door and goes forward successfully into the future.

Thank you to the club members for your support and I will continue to encourage the incoming

Captain, Bevin Ely and vice captain, Duane Fisher

by the Vice Captain and I thank Chippy Burnett for putting together a wonderful morning.

LADIES LEAGUE

On Tuesday, last week our A Reserve League had to play their final matches of the year. This was a very

difficult four-way match, playing against Westlake, Clovelly and Mowbray.

We needed at least two points to stay on top of the log. Bellville and Rondebosch were hot on our

heels, both two points behind.

Our Ladies went out in good spirits and determent to win. AND THEY WON !!!

They beat Mowbray and Clovelly 2 up, and stayed on top of the log with 27 points, winning the

A Reserve division. CONGRATULATIONS!

Our League teams have done extremely well this year, the best results for Royal Cape ever. The final

results of our league team standings for 2014 are:

A LEAGUE 2nd. Place, only two points behind Mowbray, The best achievement ever.

A RESERVE 1st. Place, played 18 matches! 2 point ahead of Rondebosch.

B RESERVE 4th. Place moved up from 7th. Place to 4th. In the last two matches.

C RESERVE 1st. Place with 20 points. 4 points better than the runner up Durbanville.

Congratulations to every player, in particular those who helped out to fill in the teams at a last minute

call. Thank you to the team captains who where efficient and prompt getting the results in. I am looking

forward to our League Dinner; we hope to see you all there to celebrate.

Gaby Terhaag League Secretary

ROYAL CAPE MONTHLY LADIES

Past Ladies Captain, Jacquie Attwood, passed away earlier this year.

She donated a trophy to be played in her honour on a date nearest her birthday on the 14th

October.

It was a great please to have the Attwood family join us for prize giving.

Jacquie introduced her grandson, Jean-Pierre, to the game of golf at the age of 8years. He has

fond memories of playing with his grandmother and will cherish these forever.

JACQUI ATWWOOD TROPHY

Colleen Attwood (daughter in-law of the late past Captain Jacqui Atwood) Brigitte Attwood

(granddaughter) Margo Prosser - winner, Jean-Pierre Attwood (grandson ) and Ladies Captain Sally

Smith.

Western Province win IPT at Royal Cape

Royal Cape proved to be a lucky hunting ground for local golf

when Western Province A won the 54th Pick n Pay SA Women’s

Inter-Provincial , the first time since 1999, and WP B came third in

the B division.

WP included two Royal Capers: Zayb Fredericks and Jade Grey

In thanking Royal Cape for hosting the event, Women’s Golf

South Africa president Karen Oliphant said ― Western Province A

winning was the ideal way to end a very busy time‖

Our boys got to play and mingle with members from not only Hong Kong Golf Club members, but also from

members of clubs from around the globe – and come away with many souvenirs, he odd prize and

fantastic memories.

A deputation of Royal Cape

members, namely Christie Cloete,

Bevin Ely, Alan Hamman and Mi-

chael Canterbury made the jour-

ney to China for the 125th

Anniversary celebrations of the

Hong Kong Golf Club, held from

19th to the 32rd of October.

By all accounts it was a particularly

impressive event, which included

three rounds of golf on the three

different courses; A Texas Scram-

ble, a betterball and a Club Team

competition, as well as dinners,

cocktails and other celebrations.

The anniversary culminated in a

gala dinner at the Ritz Carlton ho-

IN MEMORIAM

VINCENT FOX, who passed away at the age of 90 is known to a great

many member and was a regular sight at Royal Cape up until his

retirement from the game when he turned 80.

It’s not easy to sum up Vincent’s legacy at Royal Cape, as for many

years he was such a prominent figure at the club. He played every

Wednesday and every Saturday and established the eponymous Fox

terriers, a clatter of bunters who played regularly on a Monday

afternoon.

At one stage he was Royal Cape’s closest neighbour – he and his wife lived opposite the entrance,

and although I don’t believe Vincent was ever known as a hardened drinker, it ever hurts to be

within 100 metres of the bar. Also for some time Vincent calculated the members’ handicaps

manually every month in the golden years before incredulous golfers stood staring at a stalled

computer terminal and lost their swipe cards.

Vincent was born n Oudsthoorn in 1924 and went to SACS for primary school and later on to Bishops

– so he was a half decent chap. Through his school friend John Barret, with whom he played rugby -

and remarkably with whom he served in Egypt and Italy during the second world war -he met his

wife Anne. They were married on 1 January 1949 and had five children: Jay, Pru, Mandy, Tom and

Charles.

It was whille doing his medical degree at UCT that Vincent started playing golf and his lifelong

passion for the game began. He was an accomplished golfer; he played Intervarsity at UCT, in the

Stephan (now Premier) League and President’s for Royal Cape, and served on the committee for a

time as well.

A medical doctor by profession, he established his own practice in Bergvliet and was a respected

GP in the community. A massive heart attack on the 3rd hole at Royal Cape brought an end to his

career as a doctor and, ironically, brought an even greater dedication to the game for years to

come.

Undoubtedly Vincent’s darkest day was the tragic death of his son, Charles, in a motorcycle

accident. In his memory, the Charles Fox trophy is annually competed for by the junior members

playing in the Royal Cape club championships – the best gross over 72 holes.

Dr. Fox was a collector of golf literature and a man armed with a phenomenal recall of the rounds

that he played and that of his playing partners. In 2005 he gave up the game, confounding the 3rd

hole and having acquired a lifetime of memories, friends and a plethora of putters.

For many he will be remembered as the senior partner of the old firm Fox, Brooks, Lumb and Black—

a quartet so familiar on the penciled time sheets for years and years. He was an avuncular and

ubiquitous presence at Royal Cape, often joining members late in the day for a quick nine holes. On

one such occasion years ago, he joined me and some friends and, when none us of whipper

snappers could come anywhere near hitting the 8th green with a six iron, he pulled out a (wooden) 3

-wood, calmly proclaimed ―Never fear, Grandad is here‖ and bunted the ball to within millimetres

of the hole.

WIND CHEATERS!

The start of summer brings warm weather and unfortunately some strong winds. This is always going to

be a tough ask. There are two way I would suggest you try to control the ball flight.

1 2 3

1. The Knock-Down

Taking loft off the club face is the key to the knock-down shot, so in the set-up, play the ball further back

in the stance than normal, even back of middle depending on the shot required. The weight should

favour the left leg. The key swing thought should be to keep the left wrist ahead of the club face through

impact and to finish with the arms no higher than shoulder height.

2. The Low-Spinner

"My preferred way of coaching a low shot"

Taking the spin off the ball is also a great method, with the key being simply to take more club and swing

softly keeping the ball in the normal place for the club being used . Gripping down on the club, almost

down to the shaft as shown in the pic will help create a more compact and controlled swing, and be-

cause the club is so short an stiff there is no flex to kick the ball up in the air. The less clubhead speed a

ball is struck with, the less backspin is imparted on the ball- hence more distance and lower ball flight and

less chance of ballooning up into the wind.

Jack Nicklaus used this method to achieve one of the best British Open records of all time with 3 wins and

16 top-five finishes including seven runner up spots, quite amazing for a guy who renowned for hitting the

ball high.

not true that Stuart was asked to leave South Africa because

of his choice in trouserwear.

ROYAL CAPE MONTHLY RECIPROCITY

RCGC RECIPROCAL COURSE — HONG KONG GOLF CLUB

The Hong Kong Golf Club is probably known to most as the venue for the Hong Kong Open, which

boasts the likes of Rory McIlroy and Miguel Angel Jiminez as recent winners.

The club itself has a very rich history and celebrated its 125 anniversary in October, Formed in 1889

by "thirteen golfing enthusiasts‖ the club’s first course was established in Happy Valley. As the

pressure on starting times grew, the Captain and Club officials were forced to find an additional lo-

cation, which they found at Deep Water Bay, which besides providing an area for a small course

also provided perfect bathing.

Hole #4

In 1911, negotiations took place with the Government and local farmers to secure sufficient land in

Fanling to build a full 18 holes. The Old Course was laid by the end of 1911 and additional land was

acquired in the late 1920's for the New Course which was opened for play in November 1931.

A third course, the Eden, was added in 1970, thus the club now has 54 holes at Fanling and addition

there is the 9-hole par 3 course at Deep Water Bay.

The club was granted Royal status by Queen Victoria in 1987, but reverted to its original name (i.e.

dropping the ―Royal‖ ) when sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to China in 1996.

The three courses at Fanling are the Old Course, the New course and the Eden course, a composite

of which is used for the Hong Kong Open. The club has also hosted other prestigious tournaments

such as the Johnny Walker Classic and the Eisenhower Trophy.

CONTENTS ROYAL CAPE MONTHLY 19th HOLE

For Bevin Ely, our current vice-captain, it was the gift of a seven iron and

an innocuous visit to the driving range that started his love affair with

golf.

―I was hooked after duffing a bucket of balls. Unfortunately, nothing has

changed‖

He was about to join another club when he met Christie Cloete, who

persuaded him to join Royal Cape, which he now describes as his

―happy place‖.

Following the departure of Stuart Lucani for the Far East, Bevin became

the captain of the Harry Solomon team, which is seemingly going from

strength to strength.

Apart from golf, his other interests are wine and food pairings, as well fish-

ing and boating (he has a 15 nautical mile skipper’s license.) He is also a

keeper of Koi fish.

Bevin has been nominated unopposed for the captaincy of Royal Cape

and will assume the post at the end of the month – a journey somewhat

longer than 15 nautical miles.
