Dear Parents,

The weather is set fair and we look forward to welcoming many prospective families to the

school. So share us on Twitter, like us on Facebook and generally spread the word about our

great school.

We celebrated Harvest Festival in the chapel this morning and as well as some excellent

singing from the choir and the congregation, Lauren and Gabriel delivered word perfect

readings and we heard from the New Addington Salvation Army and Purley Food Hub about

how valuable all our contributions are to those in great need right on our door step. Three car

loads left the school today and my thanks to all of you for your generosity to these two

organisations.

I had the pleasure of spending a double lesson in 1P on Wednesday where I thoroughly

enjoyed being transported into the world of the Gruffalo. Thank you to Miss Parry, Mrs Parsons

and 1P for a very informative, educational and entertaining hour.

Friday afternoon saw me back in the classroom again teaching Year 5 Science as we explored

the wonders of the universe. Even the HM struggles to comprehend the scale of what is out

there beyond the skies. ‘Is there another identical planet earth somewhere?’ brought about a

very interesting discussion.

Best wishes for the weekend.

Mr Thompson

Year 1 have been reading about The Gruffalo. We thought

about the characters in the story. We worked collaboratively to act out the story using different voices. At the end of the lesson, we showed the rest of the class our acting skills.

On Tuesday 19th September, Year 2 set off by coach to Brighton. After a long but interesting journey we arrived at the Sea Life Centre and were excited about the next part of the day. We had our photos taken in front of a ‘green screen’ and appeared in the ocean as if by magic! Then we split into groups to look round at the lovely Victorian building and the amazing creatures inside it. We saw so many different kinds of fish and even some terrapins in the rainforest area. We loved exploring the shark tunnels and saw turtles and sting rays too.

We were able to touch anemones and starfish – very carefully - in the touch pool. We learned a lot about many different sea creatures, which will help us in our science topic.

A new activity this year was the Top Trumps workshop. We were given lots of fascinating information about sea creatures and then used this to create our own big top trumps cards, which are now displayed in the Year 2 classrooms. The teacher there, Naomi, was impressed by our knowledge.

After that, we went to have lunch and we were certainly ready for it!

Luckily it was a lovely sunny day so we walked through the pedestrian underpass and onto the beach where we had our picnic. The seagulls were kept busy by another group so didn’t bother trying to sneak our sandwiches or crisps! We spotted the pier, the promenade and the shingle beach, ready for our topic work back in school. We all had a fabulous day!

Last week, Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Carroty Wood. We went climbing, did archery, had campfires, night hikes, climbed high ropes and even got just a

little bit muddy! We had to use a lot of collaboration and communication in order to succeed in many of our tasks. We really enjoyed it!

On Saturday, Royal Russell hosted a brand new U11 football tournament. Many schools attended the tournament and there was some exceptional football on show throughout.

Royal Russell A team won the cup!

Royal Russell entered an A and a B team for the tournament, with both teams performing exceptionally well. The B team gained and impressive draw against a strong KCS Wimbledon side and picked up wins against Babington House and The Roche School.

The As gained good victories against Beulah Junior, The White House and Falcons School. A draw and a loss elsewhere meant that the group was tight, but they went through to the main Cup competition. A 1-0 win against KCS Wimbledon in the semi-final was followed by another 1-0 victory in the final over Wetherby Prep to leave the boys as the first champions of their very own tournament.

This year, our Lower Junior Celebration Assembly will once again take place every Friday afternoon at 2.50pm. You are warmly invited to join us to celebrate the children’s academic success, exceptional behaviour and of course, any birthdays from the week. If you would like to attend Celebration Assembly, please arrive at school no earlier 2.40pm to ensure plenty of time for you to be seated before the children arrive. Please also ensure that you do not use mobile phones or talk during this assembly as this can be distracting for the children. Please be aware that we will be celebrating birthdays on the following days this half term: 29th September: Birthdays between 18th September – 1st October 6th October: Birthdays between 2nd – 15th October 13th October: There will be no Celebration Assembly due to our 12pm finish for Half Term.

Any birthdays taking place during half term between 16th – 29th October will be celebrated when we return to school

The Junior School Choir The choir forms part of our co-curricular music programme. Throughout each academic year, the choir participates in numerous musical events - both internally and also further afield in the wider community. Recent performances have included carolling’ at Whitgift Shopping Centre, and at Addington Palace. Regular commitments for our young choristers include leading the congregational singing and providing an anthem at our bi-weekly Chapel Services. The choir also has a high-profile performance presence in our Harvest and Christmas celebrations. Their considerable contribution to the musical life of the Junior School is very much recognised, and their sense of kudos and responsibility is palpable. The rehearsal schedule set in place for this term, is as follows: Tuesdays and Fridays at 10.30-11.00am Pupils who wish to experience this co-curricular choral activity before making a firm commitment to regular participation, are warmly invited to attend the above rehearsals in the week ahead. Following this initial introduction, choristers are required to attend rehearsals each week. Mr Urie and I, look forward to welcoming lots of potential young choristers for our musical ‘taster’ sessions. Meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me, should you have any additional enquiries. Siobhan Fox Head of Music
