Royal NIVRA at a glance

• Professional organization for chartered accountants (‘registeraccountants’) in the Netherlands

• Over 14,000 members• Office located in Amsterdam, staff of over 120

people • Founded 1895 as NIVA (Dutch institute for

accountants); second oldest professional organization for accountants in the world

• Name changed to NIVRA in 1967, after enactment of Dutch act on accountancy profession

• NIVRA is a public professional organization • Awarded a royal designation in 1995 at 100th

Role and task of NIVRA

The Dutch ‘Registeraccountants’ Act (WRA) sets down NIVRA’s main duties and responsibilities:

– to advance the proper practice of the profession by registeraccountants and to foster their joint interest

– to protect the reputation of the profession

NIVRA aims at achieving a high quality of audit and accounting, embedded in good governance and of benefit to society at large

NIVRA’s objectives

• Advancing the proper practice of the profession, by setting standards and monitoring compliance

• Fostering the joint interest and represent the profession in society

• Protecting the reputation of the profession

Areas of responsibility• Audit

– Standard setting for audit and other procedures– Promote compliance with statutory rules and regulations

• Accounting– Review the auditability and practicability of existing

accounting standards– Advise regulators in their definition of rules– Provide guidance to members

• Governance– Active role in governance policy– Offer implementing and compliance guidance to

members
