REGULATIONS AND ORDERS FOR THE MILITIA 1887.

C0MMIH8ION.S IN Her Majesty's Regular Auuy

Par 1011.—Four Commissions, viz: One in the Royal Engineers,one in the Roval Artillery, one in the Cavalry and one in the Infantry,of the Regular Army, will be given annually to Cadets who havegraduated.

(rt) The Commission and choice of Corps will be offered in regularorder, first to the Cadet who has obtained the greatest number of marksfrom date of his joining to the date of his leaving College, then to theCadet who has received the next greatest number of marks, and so onin succession.

(b) In the event of there not being in any one year a sufficient numberof Cadets qualified and wishing to obtain a commission in the RoyalEngineers or Royal Artillery or Cavalry, then the four commissionsmay be given in the Infantry,

(c) To be eligible for a Commission, a Cadet must have obtained aDiploma of (Graduation with " Pass " in all obligatory subjects of

instruction ; and also be reix)rted by the Commandant to be well fitted

in all other respects to fulfil the requirements of, and to hold a commis-sion in these corps.

GENERAL ORDER (3) FEBRUARY 6th 1880.

Commissions in the Militia, Dominion of Canada.

No. 2. Cadets who have not obtained Commissions in H. M. RegularArmy will, on graduating, be appointed Lieutenants in the Militia.

(rt) The seniority of these Commissions will be determined by thehimiber of marks a Cadet has counted from the date of his joining theRoyal Military College to the date of his graduating, irresi)ective of his

College rank as Cadet, N. C. Officer or Cadet.(6) Promotion to a higher rank will be matle from this list after a

specified period of service in each rank. The period to be hereafterfixed.

(c) The officer will on ajjplication to the Deputy Adjutant (xeneral ofthe District be attached to a Corps as supernumerary for the period oftraining. Residence within the limits of the Cori)s will not be required.

(d) Ihe officer will receive the ])ay of his rank while necessarily absentfrom his home for the fmrix^se of attending the Annual training, andtravelling expenses to and from the place of training.

(c) So soon as there are a sufficient number of eligible Graduates,appointments to Permanent Militia Corps will be made solely fromthis list ; and after sufficient length of service and rank has beenobtained by Graduates, permanent Militia offices will be filled there-from.

Par 252.—Graduates of the Royal Military College of Cansdi, hold-ing rank in the Militia, but not at the time belonging to any Corps ofActive Militia, will wear the Infantry uniform vhen they desire toapi)ear in uniform, with the execution that the badge or head-dress will

be, instead of a numeral, the College Crest encircled v/ith Motto, sur-

mounted with limjerial Crown-Crest, a Mailed Arm upholding a MapleLeaf; Motto, "Truth, Duty, Valour."

Addenda.The Dominion Lands Act 49 Vic, Chap. 54, Sect. Ill, provides as

follows :

" Every graduate in Surveying of the Royal Military College ofCanada, and Every person who has followed a regular course of studyin all the branches of education required by this Act for admission as aDominion Land Surveyor, through the regular vsessions for at least twoyears in any College or University where a complete course of theore-tical and practical instruction in Surveying is organized, and who hasthereupon received from such College or University a diploma as CivilEngineer shall be exempt from serving three years as aforesaid, andshall be entitled to examination after one year's service under articles

with a Dominion I^and Surveyor (at least six months of which service

has been in the field), on producing the affidavit required by </he nextpreceding clause as to such service ; but it shall rest with the Board to

decide whether the course of instruction in such College or University is

that required by this clause." (Revised Statutes of Canada 1880, Vol. I).

Chap. 152, Sec. 14, provides :

The privilege of a shortened term of apprenticeship shall also beaccorded to any Graduate of the Military College at Kingston or of theOntario School of Practical Science and such person shall not be recjuired

to pass the ])riliminarv examination hereinbefore required for admissionto apprenticeship with a Land Surveyor but shall only bebounden to serveunder articles with a practising Land Surveyor, only filed as required bySection 17 of this Act, during twelve successive months of actual prac-tice, after which on complying with all the other recjuirement he mayundergo the examination by this Act provided. 50 Vic. c. 25, s. 14.

*' The Benchers of the Law Society of Ontario in Convocation ansom-bled enacted as follows in 1891 :

"1. A Cadet of the Royal Military College nf Canada who hasreceived his diploma of graduation shall be entitled to be admitted onthe l:KK)ks of the Law Society as a student at law or articled clerk onand iLnbject to the same terms and conditions as a graduate in theFasuloy of Arts is or shall be for the time being be entit) 1 to admissionthereon.

*' 2. Every such Cadet shall be entitled to he called to :he Bar and to

be admitted and enrolled as a Solicitor after the like period of service

and on and subject to the like terms and conditions as or shall be for

the time being be applicable to a graduate in the Faculty of Arts." 3. The provisions of these rules shall apply retrospectively so as to

entitle any such Cadet who has heretofore been admitted on the booksof the Society and has not yet been called to the Bar or admitted andenrolled as as Solicitor to apply to be so called or admitted and enrolledafter tha like iieriod of service as is required in the case of graduates in

theFsjulty of Arts."

Note.—The following Gentlemen Cadets, Graduates of the RoyalMilitary College, June 28th 1892, have elected to take Commissions in

Her Majesty's Regular Army in the arm of the Service op|X)site their

names resj>ectively, but have not been Gazetted at the time of publica-

tion of this book.
