Oh! listen to the Band How merrily they play Oh! isn't it just grand To listen to the Band.

These words of an old song epitomize the reac-tion of almost everyone hearing the stirring sound of a big military band and when the skirl of the pipes and the beat of a bass drum is added the combination becomes irresistible.

There are no better exponents of this universally loved music than the Band and Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, two superlative bands comprising a total of 60 men and 2 tonnes of equipment, who have been especially flown to Australia to perform at the Royal Melbourne Show.

These world acclaimed music makers — the gold record "Amazing Grace" sold an "amazing" 10,000,000 copies — perform throughout the Show.

You will be delighted with their magnificent music and presentation.

World class entertainments for your enjoyment

GREAT INTERNATIONAL

CHALLENGE WOODCHOPPING

Basques V New Zealand V Australia The sport of woodchopping — fast, ex-

citing and colourful — and with competitors to match — lives up to its great reputation this year with the introduction of the "Kop-pers Australia" International Challenge series featuring three top teams of axemen, Australians, New Zealanders and Basques (from the Provinces along the Franco-Spanish border).

Brought to Australia by Koppers Australia

Pty. Ltd., the Basques have an approach to woodchopping as diverse from that of the Australian and the New Zealanders as their homelands are apart, and the matching of their respective techniques provides a thrilling and unusual spectacle for fan and general Show goer alike.

Preliminary events will be contested in the Woodchop Arena with finals being fought out in the Main Arena.

THE BANKS DANCERS -- **"-•

OF THE

NEW HEBRIDES A unique presentation of the "Na Kwat" sacred initation ritual dance

of the Motal Lava Island is being performed by twelve of the most highly skilled male dancers in New Hebrides.

This dramatic, colourful dance is presented in our country for the first time by the "Banks Dancers" who were specially flown to Australia by U.T.A. French Airlines for appearances at the Royal Melbourne Show.

The spectacular "Na Kwat" — extremely difficult to perform due to the fine technique and preciseness of its choreography — is derived from times when the beautiful archipelago of Banks Islands were involved in secret societies called "Tamate"; it is danced in memory of the great legendary hero "Kwat" whom the Island Ancients believed to be the supreme creator of man.

1979 arena highlights THE ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW GRAND PARADE

Victoria's Livestock Spectacular. A fanfare resounding through stands throng-ed with excited, expectant people, heralds one of the most spectacular events ever to be seen on any Showground Arena, anywhere in the World, — the Royal Melbourne Show Grand Parade.

A moving kaleidoscope representing millions of dollars in value, thousands of hours of loving care and preparation, and the very best Victoria has produced in Stud livestock, the Grand Parade continues to thrill Show visitors year after year.

The Grand Parade will take the Arena each day at 2.30 pm except Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th (Judging Days) and Tuesday 25th when it will take place at 7.30 pm. The last Grand Parade for 1979 will be seen on Friday 28th September at 2.30 pm.

The Holden Precision driving team return to the "Royal" with new Com-modores & an exciting new ramp jump

finale to their act. THE HOLDEN PRECISION DRIVING TEAM —

A leap in the right direction. The fact that Lloyd Robertson and his

Precision Driving Team return to the Melbourne "Royal" for the ninth year is evidence of their popularity with Mel-bourne's Show crowds.

This daredevil team of stunt drivers has never failed to present something new each year, and 1979 is no exception with the in-troduction of Holden Commodores and a spectacular ramp jump to their act.

As a finale to the team's display, one car will race onto a ramp, traverse a 12.19 metre (40 ft.) gap and land on another ramp while the other team members perform a crossover manoeuvre beneath.

The jump will surpass anything the team has attempted on the Melbourne Show Arena.

THE "GOLDEN EAGLES" The "Golden Eagles" are a team of crack

skydivers who will give parachuting displays at the Royal Melbourne Show this year. The team jump from a light aircraft 1,000 metres above the arena and "free fall" for ten seconds, reaching a speed of 200 kilometres per hour before opening their parachutes and drifting down into the arena.

These are no ordinary parachutists; they are a highly experienced group chosen for their exceptional ability which includes lan-ding their parachutes in the small area set

A "Golden Eagle" glides gently to earth. aside in the arena.

The parachutes used by the team are of the "ram air" type, sometimes called the "flying mattress". Shaped like an aircraft wing, they are designed to allow air to rush into them so that they inflate and become semi rigid wings, capable of developing a small amount of lift.

Most of us regard skydiving as being dangerous; this group insists that the only danger is not being professional enough to know where the risks are and be able to avoid them, they say it also helps to have your ac-tions planned for the rare case where you fail to avoid them.

COMBINED SCHOOL BANDS An unusual musical performance will be

presented in the Main Show Arena on Wednesday September 26th when over 900 young musicians from 30 secondary schools will combine to form one great orchestra.

The event is being organised by the Music Section of the Education Department.

AUSTRALIAN GOLD CUP TENTPEGGING

The sound of thundering hooves, the glint of lances under arena lights and a roar from the crowd as the Steward signals a "Carry" — that is the atmosphere of Australian Gold Cup Tentpegging.

The Gold Cup is almost a Melbourne Show tradition and in 1979 will be competed for by five top teams — N.S.W. Police, S.A. Police, Deniliquin Army, and Victoria Police.

THE PARADE OF CHAMPIONS The Parade of Champions is a tribute to

the hundreds of breeders, stud masters and livestock managers whose efforts from breeding programme to final Show prepara-tion, have ultimately been rewarded with the "red, while and blue".

Over 50 Champion cattle representing the very best in Victoria's beef, dual purpose and

dairy breeds, 30 horses and ponies, dairy and Angora goats, all champions of their breeds will take part in this special parade to be con-ducted under the arena lights on Peoples' Day, Thursday 27th.

ARMY ASSAULT TEAM The "Battle of the Main Arena" will be

waged as Army Reserve Companies launch their assault against the "enemy ".

PARADE OF CLYDESDALES In direct contrast to the farm equipment of

today, is the Parade of Clydesdales, the "power plant" of yesterday's agricultural machinery.

Following the success of similar parades last year, the Royal Agricultural Society in conjunction with members of the Com-monwealth Clydesdale Horse Society will present "Working" Clydesdale parades three times during the Show.

^ _ . . The "Flying Vet". Ian Gollan in action.

"THE FLYING VET" — IAN GOLLAN As a trick rider, Ian Gollen is one of the

best in the business. His agility style and skill is that of a performer from the legendary Wild West Shows of yesteryear.

MASSED HIGHLAND BANDS Music is an integral part of the Roy al

Melbourne Show; catering to all tastes it can be heard in a variety of forms and styles on the picnic lawns, at concerts in our Centenary Hall, and filling the air from the many carousels and rides that abound during the Show.

For thousands of patrons, however, there is no sound to compare with the skirl of the pipes and the beat of a drum; be it haunting pibroch or stirring march. the music of a highland band has universal appeal.

Their exciting music is performed on Satur-day evenings 22nd and 29th through the generous sponsorship of James Hardie In-dustries Ltd.

INVITATION to a Free Wine Tasting

We think tasting a wine before you buy is an excellent and sensible idea. That's why you won't find our wines in the usual outlets — they are available only through private tastings. SCHLOSS BOECKELHEIM WINES have a two hundred year history, and most are grown and made in Germany's Nahe Valley on the Nahe River, which flows into the famous Rhine. Last year, one of our whites won the highest award possible for German wines, an award well above the traditional Gold Medal. Of course most of our wines are Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal winners. We will have many German, Hungarian and French wines for tasting at the Show, including two exceptional reds —

THE MOUNTED POLICE MUSICAL RIDE

For 57 years Victoria Police Mounted troopers and their magnificent grey horses have won the hearts and praise of Melbourne Show crowds with their Musical Ride.

We are proud to have the Mounted Squad return in 1979 and have no doubt that their precision routine will captivate and delight this year's Arena audience in the same way it did Show crowds over half a century ago.

PARADE OF HISTORIC AND MODERN FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT

Fire engines hold a fascination for boys around the world and very few young lads have not harboured the secret desire to don the shiny helmet, ring the bell and roar off to a fire. The Historical Fire Engine Society presents a unique parade of historical fire units in the Main Show Arena that will delight would-be fire fighters — young or old.

Some of the appliances likely to be on display this year date back to the 1890's when horses drew men, ladders and water to the fire and these are in great contrast to the modern equipment of the Metropolitan Fire Brigades also in the collection.

TRAIL HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP The trail horse championship could be call-

ed the "Battle of the Working Horse Breeds". The competition's success has been closely linked with the extraordinary rise in the popularity of working horses over recent years.

The keen competition for the Champion-

1979 arena highlights

ship between entrants this year will provide arena crowds with a thrilling finale.

CAMPDRAFTING Over five nights top riders from the eastern

stales compete for $3,000 total prize money, in the 1979 Royal Melbourne Show Camp-drafting Championships.

The battle involving man and horse, to "cut out" a steer from the mob, and drive it through a set of obstacles, against the clock, makes for action packed arena excitement.

FEDERATION EQUESTRE INTERNA-TIONALE JUMPING

Take Australia's top jumping riders, the best performed horses, add over $5,600 in prize money, and you have the formula for

one of the most exciting programmes of jum-ping events to be seen anywhere.

Real action events include the "Carlton and United Brewery" Stakes, carrying $400 in special prizes, the "A.N.Z. Bank" Grand Prix for jumping with $600 in prize money and "The Age" Puissance Championship worth $520 in special prizes.

The programme runs throughout the Show providing non stop action day and night.

SHEEP DOG TRIALS The best working dogs in Australia will

compete for $700 in prize money in a Royal Show programme of five top line events.

Classes of particular interest include the "Broken Hill Proprietary" Open Sheep Dog Trial with special prizes valued at 5200, the "Bank of New South Wales" Open Sheep Dog Trial and the "Barastoc-Fido Dog Cubes" Juvenile Sheep Dog Trial carving $200 and $130 in special prizes respectisely.

OBEDIENCE DOG TRIALS The spectacle of 400 handlers dressed in

brightly coloured uniforms, their dogs responding in unison to the group leader's commands, combine to present a bright, unusual and particularly entertaining display of dog obedience.

Over 100 different breeds of dogs, from Shetland Sheep dogs to German Shepherds, their owners representing a wide cross section of Victorian Obedience Dog Clubs and Groups, are involved in staging this mass obedience display.

HORSE EVENTS The Royal Melbourne prbgramme of horse

events is acknowledged as one of the best of any Australian Royal Show, and the Society has received almost 7.000 horse entries this year, a large proportion of them being for Saddle. Riding. Jumping, Harness and Novelty events.

The "Garryowen" Equestrienne Turnout, the most prestigious event of its type in Australia, is one particular event which com-mands a great deal of attention.

The "Garryowen" was introduced in 1934 in memory of Mrs Violet Murrell, a noted Victorian Show rider and Roy al Melbourne Show competitor, who perished in a stable fire while trying to save her favourite mount, Garryowen.

Today, the "Garryowen" attracts the best performed hacks and the elite among women riders from all over Victoria and interstate.

The Turnout is judged according to the rules laid down in 1934.

HORSE — Conformation and soundness, manners and paces. EQUIPMENT — Saddlery and costume. RIDING ABILITY

Horse events of all descriptions are con-ducted in the Main Arena continually day and night, throughout the Show. The 1979 Ring Programme, action packed, has every thing for the horse lover.

POLICE EXHIBITION

The Police Exhibition at the 1979 "Royal" is to be substantially larger than the suc-cessful 1978 display.

A new feature of the exhibition will be a display by the Force's Forensic Science division. A crime scene will be simulated, and police officers will describe what are the first, vital clues they look for which assist their in-vestigation and ultimate apprehension of the offender.

Other Police Departments taking part in the exhibition this year, are — Victoria Dock & Customs. This display outlines what people smuggle into the country and the methods they employ.

Search and Rescue and Motor Boating Squad, will demonstrate resuscitation methods and the dangers encountered with backyard swimming pools. The Motor Boating Squad present the DO's and DONT's for safe boating.

Communication and Computor Systems. The communications networks used for the control of crime cars from D24 and the corn-putor location checking system will be detail-ed.

The Dog Squad, will give practical demonstrations in dog obedience and how

these canine investigators assist at the scene of a crime.

The Traffic Operations Group, will hand out sample traffic infringement notices to alert the public of the penalties which can be incurred.

Members of the Drug Squad will be on hand to answer questions in relation to the very urgent problem of drugs.

Photographic displays depicting the ac-tivities of the Airwing and Policewomen will form part of the Exhibition.

Free show bags are to be presented to children passing through the Exhibition and Happy Honda the talking motorcycle will chat to them again.

The armour of Ned Kelly, Victoria's famous outlaw is to be another feature of the Exhibition.

The elevated stage is the venue for regular skipping displays by Police Cadets, unarmed combat exhibitions, and Bingo with special give aways.

Kanga Cop returns and an escapologist will demonstrate his amazing "art'' on centre stage.

Children can also have their finger prints taken and receive indentification tags at this bester ever Police Exhibition.

Next time With so much Show to see, you'll have to

come again, so why not travel by public transport? - It's easy, quick and convenient.

TRAINS for example; you can buy a com-bined Show admission and rail travel ticket at your suburban station, and travel right to the Show Grounds. .

Or if you're in town, catch one of the Special Show trains which leave Spencer or Flinders Street Stations about every 10 minutes.

And how about TRAMS? Number 54 and 57 trams run from Elizabeth Street City at very regular intervals and stop right at the Show Grounds' Main Epsom Road Gate -what could be simpler?

If you want to use your CAR though, there is plenty of good parking. The best place is the big V.R.C. Car Park next to the Show Grounds, on the Flemington Racecourse.

There's room for 11,000 cars and 50c a day is all you'll pay.

SHELL AND THE MAN ON THE LAND

The man on the land still plays a vital role both in providing Australians with the basic essentials of life and in boosting our export income.

This is amply demonstrated at annual shows organised by State Agricultural Societies.

Shell, by sponsoring a pre-show Journalists' Tour in each mainland State. helps to gain recognition for the efforts of these Societies and the rural community as a whole.

Shell has been trading in Australia since before the Federation of the Commonwealth. and the rural community has always represented a very large part of our business. We wish them well.

It's just part of the Shell Service.

Whether its the spine chilling excitement of the Ghost Train or the nerve shattering clatter of the Mad Mouse. thrill seekers (of all ages) will find it all at this year's "Royal".

Rides, side shows, fun parlors and other amusements will be set up in "fun zones" around the Showground to create all the "fun of the fair".

Children's carnival I

Being the International Year of the Child, the 1979 Royal Show Childrens Carnival has attracted the particular attention of Show organizers.

Youngsters passing through the turnstiles between 8.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on the last Saturday, 29th September will share in a distribution of about 25,000 free showbags containing novelty gifts, a free ride ticket and lots of other goodies.

A number of the show bags given out will contain special tickets which could enable the lucky holder to win a brand new bicycle or other valuable prizes.

Show bags The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria maintains strict supervision

over the contents of Show bags and the method used to sell them. Every Vendor must present the Society with a list of all articles to be

sold in the Show bag and their respective retail price. The sale price of the Show bag must not exceed the total retail value of all the enclosed items.

Show bags and their contents are scrutinized by the Public Health Department with Society representatives at a special preview open to members of the news media. Should the slightest doubt be held by a Health Officer about the safety of any article, that article is rejected and the Vendor requested to substitute or modify it.

The Society specifies that all contents and prices are to be prominently displayed on a large board at each stall at all times.

Throughout the Show, Society inspectors make random purchases of bags and if they find any discrepancy in the contents as displayed, im-mediate action is taken by the Society in having the vendor rectify the situation.

Parade of fashions from the U.K. Whether the fashions be local or from

overseas, the look is exciting in Australian pure new wool.

This year, 1979, is the Australian Wool Corporation's 21st birthday of participation in the Royal Shows through a guest nation fashion presentationg and to help celebrate they are bringing to Australia fashion in wool from the U.K.

Pretty 23 year-old Pamela Link will be the U.K.'s Ambassadress for wool. A profes-sional model and dancer, Pamela who is 5'8" tall with light brown hair, was chosen by the I. W.S. for her skills in communicating with audiences and a sense of rhythm.

The fashion statement of Pamela's war-drobe will be one of wool's versatility, colour and fun. United Kingdom Fashion Adviser, Nancy Richards, chose the clothes and in-vited some of the most original talents work-ing in Britain today to make up designs.

The parades, which are free of charge, have become one of the main attractions at the Royal Melbourne Show.

The collection of U.K. garments can be seen daily at the Australian Wool Corpora-tion's new venue - "Centrepoint", Corner Degraves Street and Lennon Avenue. MAP REFERENCE (07)

Introducing Ag-Mach-Show Royal

vsak

PACKS

The advent of "Ag-Mach-Shov. Royal" has resulted in a fifty per cent increase in the number of agricultural machinery and equip-ment standholders at the 1979 Royal Melbourne Show.

Those new to the Melbourne Show scene are Vin Rowe Pty. Ltd., Mono Pumps, Hardi Spraying Systems, Sonic Products, Ariens Echo and Elliott Machinery Tools, whilst firms such as Kubota Tractors, Hassett Machinery, Howard Rotavators, Blands of Goroke and the Cyclone Company have returned to the fold after absences of varying periods of years.

The concept of • 'Ag-Mach-Show Royal" is an open, uncluttered "Field Day" type area, flood lit by night and situated adjacent to the traditional agricultural machinery area

bounded by McCracken Avenue, Degraves Street and Smith Street. (58)

"Ag-Mach-Show Royal" is a must for everyone with an interest in today's modern, mechanized business of farming.

CHILDRENS THEME FOR GOVERN- MENT PAVILION MAP REFERENCE R5

The International Year of the Child has been chosen as the theme for over 20 com-posite displays in the Victorian Government Pavilion,

Youngsters will have fun wandering through this magnificent Pavilion and at the same time learn, with the aid of audio visual presentations, working models and demonstrations, what different Government Departments do and how their operations combine to make the Garden State a great State.

Here are details of a few displays you'll see

• YOUTH, SPORT AND RECREATION

Youngsters have the chance to really enjoy themselves by actively sampling a number of special recreations designed especially for them.

language and multi-cultural education.

• ROAD SAFETY AND TRAFFIC AUTHORITY —

DAIRY INDUSTRY PAVILION Following a fire which completely

destroyed the Dairy Pavilion in Lennon Avenue on May 2 this year, the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society was determin-ed that the display, which had been a Royal Show institution for two generations of Melbourne Showgoers, be a part of the 1979 Show, and that work on a new Pavilion should start immediately the rubble from the site was cleared away.

The fine new building at the corner of Degraves Street and Lennon Avenue was

built at a cost of $620,000 and has a floor area of approximately 2,858 square metres and houses an exciting new array of commer-cial and promotional displays.

"BIG M" CARTON Complementing our new Dairy Industry

Pavilion is the giant 15.86 metre high replica of the carton so well known to the lovers of flavoured milk.

The huge "Big M" Carton was the com-bined project of the R.A.S.V. and the Vic-torian Dairy Industry Authority, the originators and marketers of "Big M" in Vic-toria.

The "carton", a primary selling point for "Big M", will also be a distribution point for "Big M" to kiosks around the Show Grounds.

CENTREPOINT — the new Centre for Wool Fashion.

Centrepoint (corner of Degraves Street and Lennon Avenue), is the new location for the Australian Wool Corporation's presentations of beautiful International Wool fashions.

The R.A.S. and the Wool Corporation have spent $30,000 in "fitting out" Centre-point for its new role as the Royal Show Fashion Centre, with a stage across the southern end of the building incorporating a complex of changing and make-up rooms, and a special holding pen and revolving plat-form for the Corporation's now famous Merino ram.

NEW GARDENS AND LAWNS AROUND THE SHOWGROUNDS

As part of the Society's on going pro-gramme of ground improvement and modification, about $150,000 has been spent this year in the development of several new lawn and garden areas which add to the col-our and beatity of the Show Grounds as well as being the ideal places to sit down and relax.

Other ground improvements include the extension of road asphalting and the interior and exterior painting of several stock pavilions and grandstands.
