The motivation behind HMAS CERBERUS' two re<:ent rugb)' grandfinal victories was more important to tbe burly rugb)' oo)'S and tbeir followers than the fact tbat tbey had just completed the "dean sweep" by taking eVer)' title they had contested during 1'83.

Best perfmrmances for NAVY were recordedby Frank Wakewood.l\Iatt Hudson, Roger Buto·rae and Dave Tomkinson.

Best overall individual skier for NAVY wasFrank Wakewood. who, despite his lack of pre·race traming, also won the coveted award of ....'""Australian Services Individual Champion". Hiscombmed results showed that he was the fastestAustralian skier and that he had beaten fivemembers of the BritiSh team - a great effort byFrank.

Although disappomted with their result, ourcorrespondent noted that the NAVY team wereas gracIous m their defeat as they have been inpast victories.

In summation NAVY's manager. LEUT DaveTomkinson. saId: "Whilst taking nothing awayfrom RA,\F's well-deser\'ed \ictory. we skied thegiant slalom a lIttle too comfortably, leaving our·selves a "pressure race" in the special slalom togam the over,l.ll championship.

"NAVY's teamwork and ;;portsmanship bothon and off the snow was agam commendable, antiwe are all looking forward to the competition in1984."

~'or the giant slalom the weather condtionswere excellent. Clear and sunny skies prevailedwith a mixtureofhard·packed and good soft snowthroughout the long winding course.

After two runs on separal.e courses in this eventboth NAVY and RAAF had registered a team reosuIt within the first 16 placmgs. R,\,\F led NAVYbyt2 pomtsand ARMY were 196pointsbehind.

With NAVY's quickest skiers, Frank Wake·wood and Tony Powell placed third and fourth inthe ,\ustralian placings and all our other skiershaving completed the race withoutdisqualificatIOn. N,\VY had every prospect ofmaking up the difference on RAAF dunng thespeCial slalom.

Conditions were agam excellent for the finalday's race. the much tighter and more technicalspecial slalom. NAVY held a sllght lead overRAAF after the first run. however. disasterstruck m this event with five NAVY skiers eitherfalling or taking the "gates"the long way thrQughand allowed RA/\F. despite the falls they had inthiS ('vent. to consolidate their lead and take outthe 198.~ ChampionshIp.
