ROYAL ASCOT MEMORIES:CANFORD CLIFFS
By Tom Peacock
There are many ways to spend money in the hope of tasting
some form of Royal Ascot success, but for a priceless moment in
one of the prestige events for three years in a row, it cost just
,50,000 to buy Canford Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) at Doncaster=s
St Leger sale as a yearling.
Canford Cliffs, bought by Peter Doyle for trainer Richard
Hannon and a family syndicate headed by food processing
multimillionaire Robin Heffer, hit the Royal meeting first as a
juvenile in 2009 with an apparently colossal reputation from the
Hannon gallops allied with an impressive maiden win at
Newbury that saw him sent off the 7-4 favourite for the G2
Coventry S. On a day which had seen Hannon and jockey Richard
Hughes already clinch the G1 Queen Anne S. with Paco Boy (Ire)
(Desert Style {Ire}), it was the six-length demolition of Xtension
(Ire) (Xaar {GB}) by the younger stablemate which was to live
even longer in the memory.
AI=d ridden him most days and the lads at home had all backed
him for the Coventry before he had even run, that=s how good
they thought he was,@ recalled Hughes. AI thought he was a
certainty that day. He was so keen and was actually running
away with me at halfway and he still won easily, it was an
amazing performance. I actually thought he was the best horse I
had ridden even then.@ cont. p2
A RACING CLUB LIKE NO OTHER By Emma Berry
Two years ago, Royal Ascot launched a marketing campaign
with the tagline >Like nowhere else.' It's a title that could be
equally applied to the Royal Ascot Racing Club.
There are plenty of syndicates in operation in Britain, and the
rise in this type of ownership can only be seen as a positive for
racing all around the world, but there are few shared ownership
experiences which can boast quite the same level of luxury and
access as the one started by Ascot racecourse almost 20 years
ago. The club's racing manager Harry Herbert was initially
contacted by Ascot's then-chief executive Douglas Erskine-Crum
with a view to setting up a racing club at the course.
"Various racecourses were putting racing clubs together and
we thought about all the things members could possibly want B
car parking, metal badge, access to an amazing room with
private catering. And then of course there are the horses,"
Herbert reflects.
At this time of the year, there's understandably a huge desire
from many owners and trainers to take a runner to Royal Ascot
with a fighting chance. When a horse is owned by several
hundred members of the Royal Ascot Racing Club, the pressure
must be even greater for the trainer in question but this season
the club looks as if it could have 40% of its string on target for
the Royal meeting.
The 2-year-old Headway (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) built on an
eye-catching debut at Newbury on April 21 to run out the easy
winner of a Chester maiden recently, in turn teeing up a possible
tilt at the G2 Coventry S. Meanwhile the dual winner Projection
(GB) (Acclamation {GB}) holds an entry later in the week for the
ultra-competitive Wokingham H. As respective representatives
of William Haggas and Roger Charlton, both horses hail from
stables currently enjoying a rich vein of form.
"Of course it's wonderful to have two potential candidates for
the Royal meeting and Ascot does a fantastic job looking after
the club members," says Royal Ascot Racing Club manager Harry
Herbert. Cont. p3

Royal Ascot Memories: Canford Cliffs cont. from p1 Hannon added, AHe could run fast, that=s for sure. He did a bitof work one morning early on and Hughesie said to me >this issomething different.= I listened to Hughesie and we were prettyconfident going into that Coventry.@ Hannon=s son Richard jnr, who took over the reigns at thefamily=s Wiltshire headquarters in 2014, was assistant in theCanford Cliffs days. AI think the Coventry was my favourite of his races,@ he said. AItwas just >bang= out the stalls and he never saw another horse.@ It took Canford Cliffs the best part of a year to register anotherwin. He had lost his unbeaten record in the G1 Prix Morny andwas beaten in both the G3 Greenham S. and the G1 2000Guineas. Ample consolation was provided by a handsomevictory in the Irish equivalent and he was back to hisstrong-travelling best back at Ascot in the 2010 St James=s PalaceS., running down stablemate Dick Turpin (Ire) (Arakan) justbefore the line.
AHe=d been to The Curragh and duly won but I suppose he stillhad to go and do it again against the likes of Makfi after theGuineas,@ said Hughes. AI knew it wasn=t going to be that easygoing on the round course as you need to try to get some cover. It was a pretty good performance beating Dick Turpin, especiallyas he had lost a shoe on the home bend. He was just full ofspeed, he=d have won a July Cup if he=d run there. There wasnothing that could go with him at the yard.@ Two more Group 1s had been added in as many races, the2010 Sussex S. at Goodwood and the Lockinge S. at Newbury inthe spring of 2011 before Canford Cliffs was back at Ascot. Bythe time of the Queen Anne, Coolmore partners had also boughtinto the colt. He was to deliver perhaps his best effort on the form book to
open the Royal meeting with Hughes oozing confidence throughthe first three-quarters of a mile. This time, though, therecord-breaking Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) was the obstacle in hispath. Hughes sat on the shoulder of the French mare andCanford Cliffs had to dig deep to get past her entering the finalfurlong. The winning margin was a length but the talking pointafterwards was that Goldikova=s jockey Olivier Peslier hadweighed in 2lb overweight, having put up extra on the scalesand also changed his riding boots in error. AWhen we beat Goldikova, people were talking about Olivierputting up overweight, but I still think I=d have won,@ saidHughes. AThe problem with Canford Cliffs was he was very, verybrilliant but you wouldn=t have wanted to get into a slog withhim. You just had to get him in the position you needed, followthe right horse and he=d just go. You just had to beat what wasin front of him.@ Hannon sent out quicksilver sprinting champions such as LyricFantasy (Ire) and Mr Brooks (GB) and two dual Classic winnersTirol (GB) and Don=t Forget Me (Ire) in a career stretching over40 years. Canford Cliffs clearly ranks high in his personalstandings. Cont. p3

Royal Ascot Memories: Canford Cliffs cont.
AThat Queen Anne was really special, it was a hell of a race, and Goldikova was a very good filly,@ he said. AWe=ve had a lot of good horses here over the years that wonthe Guineas and all that sort of thing. You couldn=t necessarilystrike him out as the best, but he was definitely one of them. Hewas just a very, very good horse.@ His son, who has overseen the likes of Queen Anne winnerToronado (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), Guineas and Lockinge heroNight Of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and will have similar hopesfor Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}), also knows his milers. AWe were very lucky to have him in training at four and get torun in the Queen Anne,@ he said. AWe=ve had some great filliesand colts here so it=s hard to compare them. When Canford Cliffswas at his best and he had his ground, he was unbeatable over amile.@ Canford Cliffs ran only once more, suffering defeat to Frankel(GB) in the Sussex and also returning with an injury whichsignaled the end of his career. Into his third season as a stallion,he was standing at Coolmore in 2017 for i10,000. AI do have one, he=ll be a mile-and-a-half horse,@ said Hughes, who is now training in Lambourn. AThey all seem to be needing atrip, which is a bit strange given what he was.@
A Racing Club Like No Other cont. from p1
The club initially started six horses in training but now has five, with Richard Hannon and Michael Bell completing the line-up oftrainers along with Haggas and Charlton. "The horses are all with top trainers and members can call usat Highclere at any time to talk about plans for the horses,"Herbert continues. "They are kept very well informed withplenty of stable visits and dinner in the Jockey Club Roomsahead of visiting the Newmarket-trained horses. When we setup the club I don't think anything like it had been seen anywherebefore." Cont. p4

A Racing Club Like No Other cont.
Similarly unique was the sight of members of the club packing
the famous winner's enclosure at Epsom after Motivator (GB)
(Montjeu {Ire}) pulled off the dream result for Michael Bell and
his many owners by winning the Derby in 2005.
"Motivator was incredible, it was just a fantastic moment,"
recalls Herbert of the club's most famous victory.
Along with his brother-in-law and The Queen's racing manager
John Warren, Herbert has been entrusted with the selection of
the horses from the outset. "We've had 55 horses so far in the
club's 19 years and around about 20% of them have been
black-type horses,@ he says. AIn our first year Brancaster won the
[G3] Horris Hill then Siege was a top handicapper who was
second in the Britannia."
The success with Motivator was continued through one of his
daughters, Pollenator (Ire), who won the G2 May Hill S. of 2009
for Richard Hannon, while the club has also enjoyed notable
victories with G2 Richmond S. victor Revenue (Ire) (Cadeaux
Genereux {GB}), Bannister (GB) (Inchinor {GB}), winner of the G2
Gimcrack S., and Windsor Forest S. winner Supremacy (GB)
(Vettori {Ire}). Whatever happens on the racecourse, however,
membership has extra advantages, not least during the Royal
meeting.
"We've found over the years that firm friendships have been
made," Herbert says. "It's really all thanks to the Duke of
Devonshire and Douglas Erskine-Crum. They got it all off the
ground and didn't cut any corners. The club filled very quickly
and I think people liked the idea of paying an annual
subscription and then being able to enjoy the haven of the
rooms at Ascot. You have not only the comfort but also fantastic
service to really enjoy the racing."
Nick Smith, Ascot's Head of Communications and International
Racing, emphasises the importance of the club to the
racecourse.
"We always try to make sure that the club is integrated into
the racecourse activities and email members with any updates
of what is happening here," he says. "We want it to be seen as a
racing club rather than a hospitality club and we are always
interested in new members who are really focused on the
horses. That said, the facilities are amazing with viewing on both
sides of the racecourse, and right by the winning line. The
atmosphere when the club has a winner at Ascot is fantastic and
we've been fortunate in that regard. We're buying horses at a
level where we should see some decent success and the
members have become very used to that."
In addition to members being provided badges for themselves
and a guest for every day of racing at Ascot, including the Royal
meeting, all prize-money won goes back to the club to be shared
equally, as well as 50% of the sales price of any of the horses.
Herbert says, "There aren't many clubs you can join where you
actually get something back for your membership fee but it's the
racing side that's really important. Of course it's wonderful to
have success anywhere but when it comes at Ascot it's even
better. Symposium (GB) won for us there, as did Supremacy
(GB), and Revenue (Ire) won the Windsor Castle S. at the Royal
meeting, which was even better. It's the glue that binds
everyone together."

>ST GEORGE= HEADS CUP CONFIRMATIONS Defending winner Order Of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
heads the 18 confirmations for next Thursday=s G1 Gold Cup at
Royal Ascot. The Ballydoyle charge finished third in last year=s
G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe and most recently won the Listed
Saval Beg S. at Leopardstown on May 26. The 5-year-old could
be joined by stablemate Kingfisher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), as well as
Jessica Harrington=s Torcedor (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who
bested Order Of St George first-up in the G3 Vintage Crop S. on
Apr. 23. Also engaged are last-out G3 Henry II S. winner Big
Orange (GB) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}) and the last two G1 St
Leger winners, Harbour Law (GB) (Lawman {Fr}) and Simple
Verse (Ire) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}), as well as Godolphin=s
Winning Story (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) and Qewy (Ire) (Street
Cry {Ire}).
Thursday=s Royal Ascot card also features the G2 Ribblesdale
S., with the regally bred Mori (GB) (Frankel {GB}--Midday {GB})
and Aidan O=Brien=s G1 Investec Oaks third Alluringly (Fastnet
Rock {Aus}) featuring among the 15 remaining entries. Trainer
John Gosden=s four remaining contenders include Oaks fifth and
>TDN Rising Star= Coronet (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).
TWO-YEAR-OLD ADDED TO GOFFS LONDON Twice-placed juvenile Yulong Warrior (Street Cry {Ire}) has
been added as a wildcard to Monday=s Goffs London Sale. The
colt was second in maidens at Cork and Navan on May 19 and
June 3, respectively, for trainer Mick Halford and holds entries in
the Listed Windsor Castle S. and the Listed Chesham S. at the
Royal meeting.
There are currently 21 lots set to sell at the Goffs London Sale
at The Orangery at Kensington Palace, including 19 horses in
training.
THREE ADDED TO JOCKEYS= CHAMPIONSHIP Three more jockeys have thrown their names into the hat for
the inaugural Lady Jockeys= Thoroughbred World Championship
at Bro Park in Sweden on July 4. Ana O=Brien, daughter of Aidan
O=Brien, will represent Ireland in the five-race series, while
Sammy Jo Bell has accepted an invitation to represent the UK
and Sara Slot will ride for Denmark. The Championships will host
riders from Asia, Europe, North America and Australasia.
Dennis Madsen, Svensk Galopp=s Director of Racing, said, AWe
are delighted with the line-up so far and are looking forward to
what will surely be a highly competitive event. The Lady Jockeys=
Thoroughbred World Championship will focus international
attention on racing in Sweden and provide an opportunity for us
to showcase some of our best facilities and the quality of our
sport.@
CHANTILLY REMATCH Saturday=s G3 Prix Paul de Moussac Longines at Chantilly
serves in part as a revival of hostilities between two of the main
protagonists in the Listed Prix de Pontarme, with Haras de Saint
Pair=s unbeaten Trais Fluors (GB) (Dansili {GB}) faced again by
>TDN Rising Star= Ratiocination (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}).
Connections of the latter may feel that the May 23 Saint-Cloud
contest came too soon after his impressive four-length
conditions success here 13 days earlier, but there was much to
admire about the way Andre Fabre=s representative went
through that race. George Strawbridge=s Stunning Spirit (GB)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was 4 1/2-lengths third behind Phelps Win
(Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) in the G3 Prix de Guiche over nine furlongs
here on May 7, having previously finished runner-up to
Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}) in the Apr. 16 G3 Prix de
Fontainebleau over this course and distance, and is becoming
known for trademark consistency.

GUN RUNNER TAKES THESPOTLIGHT IN FOSTER
by Ben Massam
In addition to being Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg})=s home
base for the majority of the year, Churchill Downs has served as
a checkpoint for various stages of the chestnut=s career. It was
the site where he graduated from the maiden ranks at first
asking in
September 2015,
the site where
one year ago he
posted an
authoritative
victory in the GIII
Matt Winn S. and
the site where he
became a Grade I
winner and
defeated older
horses for the
first time in the GI Clark H. Nov. 25. The latter triumph was a
coming out party of sorts for the Winchell Thoroughbreds and
Three Chimneys Farm colorbearer, who up until that point was
known for his remarkable consistency in chasing top members
of his class home in the Classics. Cont. p3
DON ALBERTO HOMEBRED GIVES FRANKEL
FIRST SOUTH AMERICAN WINNER by Alan Carasso
Juddmonte Farms= outstanding young sire Frankel (GB) was
represented by his first South American winner when the
American-bred Bertolina Fran, owned and bred by the Don
Alberto Corporation, proved 1 1/2 lengths too strong for a group
of juvenile fillies in Friday=s fifth race from Club Hipico in
Santiago, Chile.
Drawn gate nine in a field of 13 and sent off the 23-10 betting
favorite on debut, the chestnut, foaled in Kentucky on Southern
Hemisphere time Aug. 17, 2014, jumped on terms and raced
prominently for the opening 600 meters. Driven along while
well away from the inside over a rain-affected surface, she was
overtaken to her outside entering the final furlong, but switched
leads and was doing her best work late (video).
Bertolina Fran is out of Burren Trail (Ire) (Shamardal), a full-
sister to Grade III winner Oregon Lady (Ire), while third dam
Oscillate (Seattle Slew) is responsible for successful dual-
hemisphere sire Mutakddim (Seeking the Gold). Cont. p8

Rodolphe Brisset, longtime assistant trainer to Bill Mott, notched his first victory as the
trainer of Lady Soul (Speightstown) in Thursday’s fifth race at Churchill Downs. “It’s
very special to get my first win at Churchill Downs,” Brisset said. “Hopefully this is the
first of many to come. Being teamed up with Julien (Leparoux) makes this even more
special.” The 33-year-old native of Tours, France began training on his own April 1 and

Bird Song | Coady photo
Gun Runner recently delivered a career-best effort when
completing the exacta behind North America=s all-time richest
Thoroughbred, >TDN Rising Star' Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song), in
the Mar. 25 G1 Dubai World Cup. Saturday night, he goes
postward as the main attraction and heavy favorite in the
GI Stephen Foster H.--a Breeders= Cup automatic qualifying race
for the GI Classic--back home under the Twin Spires.
AGun Runner was a completely different horse last year during
his 3-year-old campaign,@ Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen
told the Churchill notes team. AHe has physically developed into
a different animal. We knew with his type of running style and
pedigree that he would keep getting better over time...We gave
him a break after he ran in Dubai and he=s been training
smoothly ever since.@
One potential complicating factor for front-running Gun
Runner is the presence of two likely pace rivals in Bird Song
(Unbridled=s Song) and Stanford (Malibu Moon). Bird Song has
notched two graded stakes successes in wire-to-wire fashion this
year, most
recently
annexing the
May 6
GII Alysheba S.
over a rain-
soaked strip to
run his Churchill
Downs record to
three-for-four.
The classy
Stanford,
meanwhile, did not find a wet track to his liking when fifth as the
favorite in the Apr. 22 GII Charles Town Classic.
Honorable Duty (Distorted Humor) enjoyed an impressive
three-race win streak at the Fair Grounds this winter,
culminating with a tally in the GII New Orleans H. Apr. 1, and the
bay recently crossed the wire second behind Bird Song in the
Alysheba. The Brendan Walsh trainee could be an off-the-pace
threat beneath Hall of Fame electee Javier Castellano. Breaking
Lucky (Lookin At Lucky) was a neck second behind Honorable
Duty in the New Orleans, and further back, a strong runner-up
behind Gun Runner in the Clark. Excluding his tries over wet
tracks, the 5-year-old has run a number of races that would
make him competitive against this group.

FOREVER UNBRIDLED FINALLY BACKby Brian DiDonato
Well-bred multiple Grade I winner Forever Unbridled
(Unbridled=s Song) gets her 5-year-old season underway
Saturday night in Churchill=s GII Fleur de Lis H., a AWin and
You=re In@ qualifier for the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff. The Chuck
Fipke homebred capped a three-race win streak in last April=s
GI Apple Blossom H. at Oaklawn, and was second and third,
respectively, in salty runnings of Belmont=s GI Ogden Phipps S. in
June and Saratoga=s GI Personal Ensign S. in August. The Dallas
Stewart pupil easily handled a weaker group in the GI Beldame
Invitational S. back in Elmont Oct. 1, and was a good third
behind superstars
Beholder (Henny
Hughes) and
Songbird
(Medaglia d=Oro)
in last year=s
Breeders= Cup
Distaff at Santa
Anita Nov. 4. The
daughter of 2006
GI Kentucky Oaks
heroine Lemons
Forever (Lemon
Drop Kid)
underwent surgery
to remove an ankle chip since her last start.
Among those who could give the expected heavy favorite a run
for her money is the streaking Big World (Custom for Carlos).
The 2015 GIII Tempted S. winner completed her 2016 campaign
with a restricted stakes score in the Louisiana Champions Day
Ladies S. at Fair Grounds Dec. 10, and has been a win machine
since then. She added another restricted event at Delta Feb. 11
and an open optional claimer at Oaklawn Mar. 30 before
stealing this venue=s GI La Troienne S. in the slop May 5.
Romantic Vision (Lemon Drop Kid) was second that day.
Four runners exit the local GIII Matron S. May 20, including
winner Walkabout (Stroll), a half-sister Fort Larned (E Dubai),
the dominant winner of the GI Stephen Foster H. on this card in
2013. Last year=s GI Ashland S. upsetter Weep No More
(Mineshaft) was a late-on-the-scene fifth that day.

ADVANTAGE >IT TIZ= IN SUMMERTIME OAKSby Alan Carasso
In a pair of starts against fellow >TDN Rising Stars=--Paradise
Woods (Union Rags) and her sidelined stablemate Unique Bella
(Tapit) and--Tommy Town Thoroughbreds= It Tiz Well (Arch) was
beaten a cumulative total of 21 1/2 lengths when runner-up in
the GII Santa Ynez S. and third in the GI Santa Anita Oaks,
respectively. With nothing remotely of that quality signed on for
Saturday=s GII Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita, the $230,000
Keeneland September purchase has the edge in experience and
looks to have a fine
shot at rediscovering
her winning ways.
Never outside the
top three in six tries
to date, It Tiz Well
annexed a seven-
furlong allowance by
a widening margin
Feb. 3, then
stretched out
successfully to a
route of ground for a
one-length success
in Oaklawn=s GIII Honeybee S. Mar. 11. She was left some 14
lengths in the wake of Paradise Woods in the Santa Anita Oaks,
the form of which has been further franked by Abel Tasman
(Quality Road)=s subsequent victories in the GI Kentucky Oaks
and GI Acorn S.
Faypien (Ghostzapper), a $720,000 acquisition out of last
year=s OBS April Sale, debuted with a third to Paradise Woods
over an insufficient 5 2 furlongs Mar. 11, but has landed her
two most recent appearances over seven panels, including a
half-length defeat of her Grade I-winning stable companion
Noted and Quoted (The Factor) in the May 14 Angel Flight S.
Mopotism (Uncle Mo) was the distant runner-up to Unique
Bella in the GII Las Virgenes S. Feb. 5, then shipped into Sunland
Park and walked away with a popular 3/4-length success in the
Island Fashion S. Feb. 26. A distant fourth to Paradise Woods in
the Santa Anita Oaks, the bay exits a 10th in the Kentucky Oaks
May 5.

>SALLY= LOOKS TO INCREASE STREAK IN
HONEYMOON by Brian DiDonato
Joe Turner=s unbeaten and pretty much untested Sircat Sally
(Surf Cat) looks to make it seven-for-seven in Santa Anita=s
GII Honeymoon S. Saturday. The Cal-bred controlled the pace to
annex the GIII Providencia S. over this nine-panel trip two back
Apr. 8, and handled two of these returning foes when cut back
to a mile for the
GIII Senorita S.
May 6. Beau Recall
(Ire) (Sir Prancealot
{Ire}) was second in
the Senorita, and
also to Sircat Sally in
the China Doll S.
Mar. 11. Senorita
third Pacific Wind
(Curlin) was coming
off an impressive debut score Mar. 4 that garnered the >TDN
Rising Star= distinction. Zaffinah (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) was
runner-up to Pacific Wind in her maiden breaker, and has won
twice since, most recently taking a course-and-distance optional
claimer two spots ahead of La Force (Ger) (Power {GB}).
MCCRAKEN IS BACK IN THE MATT WINNby Ben Massam
Whitham Thoroughbreds= >TDN Rising Star= McCraken
(Ghostzapper), winner of his first four career starts prior to
some rough sailing this spring, has the opportunity to kick start
the second half of
his sophomore
campaign as the
heavy favorite in
Saturday evening=s
GIII Matt Winn S. at
Churchill Downs. The
bay has plenty of
familiarity with the
local strip, having
won his first three
starts there as a juvenile--culminating with a decisive score in
the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. in late November.

Matt Winn S. cont.
Everything went according to plan for the Ian Wilkes charge
leading up to his victorious 3-year-old bow in the GIII Sam F.
Davis S. at Tampa Bay, but after being forced to miss time with a
mild ankle strain, McCraken missed an expected start in the GII
Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby and was instead re-routed to
Keeneland=s Apr. 8 GII Toyota Blue Grass S., where he finished
an even third. The misfortune continued in the May 6 GI
Kentucky Derby, when McCraken was slammed at the start and
never able to get involved in an eighth-place finish over a sealed
track. He emerged from that effort with a cut on his left hind leg
and was forced to skip the remaining legs of the Triple Crown.
Now with four local workouts under his belt, the colt appears
poised to reach the winner=s circle beneath the Twin Spires and
prepare for a return to the highest level this summer.
AHe=s been doing great,@ Wilkes told the Churchill notes team.
AIt was very frustrating with the cut he suffered in the Derby. It
took a long time to heal and get him back to where he=s
comfortable. It=s still not completely healed but it doesn=t bother
him at all to run. We were once at the top of the 3-year-old list
but now we need to prove ourselves again.@
BCWT Ltd.=s Society Beau (Curlin) is the only one of
McCraken=s five rivals to own a previous victory around the Matt
Winn=s two-turn trip.
The Neil Howard trainee was most recently sixth in the
restricted Sir Barton S. at Pimlico May 20. Earlier on that same
GI Preakness S. undercard, Zayat Stables= Aquamarine
(Gemologist) finished a good second behind >TDN Rising Star=
Recruiting Ready (Algorithms) in the six-furlong Chick Lang S.

FULL FIELD OF TURF FILLIES FOR REGRET
by Brian DiDonato
As many as a dozen sophomore fillies take to the Churchill
Downs turf for Saturday night=s GIII Regret S. >TDN Rising Star=
Proctor=s Ledge (Ghostzapper) gets the narrow morning-line
nod at 7-2 as she stretches back out to the same nine-panel trip
she broke her
maiden at down at
Gulfstream in
January. The
Patricia Moseley
homebred aired in
a Hallandale
optional claimer
Feb. 18, but found
herself trapped in
traffic at the top of
the stretch of
Keeneland=s GIII
Appalachian S.
Apr. 13 and had to
settle for third
behind the talented La Coronel (Colonel John). A bit closer early
in the May 5 GIII Edgewood S. here, the bay seemed somewhat
flat-footed in the lane, and was fourth behind La Coronel again
and beaten a neck for third by Sweeping Paddy (Paddy
O=Prado). The ground was rated Agood@ that day, but should be
firm on Saturday, and that could make the difference.
Chubby Star (Malibu Moon) defeated Sweeping Paddy in a
Keeneland allowance over nine panels Apr. 7, and flew home
from out of nowhere to complete the exacta behind >TDN Rising
Star= Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) while taking on the boys in
Pimlico=s James W. Murphy S. May 20.
Sameeha (Street Cry {Ire}) broke through third out going sprint
to route at Oaklawn Mar. 18, and looked good successfully
testing yielding turf in a Keeneland allowance Apr. 23. Fizzy
Friday (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) went two-for-two sprinting
over Dundalk synthetic for owner/trainer Andy Oliver before
being acquired privately by Michael House and turned over to
Nacho Correas. She made her Stateside debut against males
here May 29, and did well to split a pair of stakes winners in
second.
Frankel=s First South American Winner cont. from p1
Burren Trail is also the dam of a Malibu Moon filly foaled on
Southern Hemisphere time Aug. 11, 2015 that has since been
sent to Chile, was given the following breeding season off and
produced a filly by Empire Maker this past Feb. 9. With the
victory, Frankel has been represented by 42 individual winners
in seven different countries (U.S., England, France, Ireland,
Germany, Japan, Chile) and runners in Australia, Argentina and
South Africa.
Don Alberto Corporation, who campaigns leading 3-year-old
filly and >TDN Rising Star= Unique Bella (Tapit), also own and
bred Rubilinda, named a >Rising Star= off a stunning debut
victory at Belmont Park May 27 (video) and who runs next in the
$100,000 Wild Applause S. June 24, according to Don Alberto=s
Fernando Diaz-Valdes. Don Alberto also races Frankel=s
Group 3-winning son Cunco (GB), who is expected to continue
his career in the U.S. later this summer.

FEELING BOSSY (f, 4, Courageous Cat--Keep the Feeling, by Kris
S.) was let go at 8-1 for this 2017 debut and first try over 10
furlongs despite closing last season with a pair of turf victories,
including a one-mile allowance win against open company at
Aqueduct last time Nov. 13. The New York-bred bided her time
in a ground saving fifth off opening splits of :25.10, :50.94 and
1:15.85. Swung to the outside on the far turn, she swept past
the leaders in the lane and held off Queen Blossom (Ire)
(Jeremy) to score by 3/4 of a length. The winner has a juvenile
full-sister named Feeling Catty and yearling full-brother named
Feeling Courageous. Her dam produced a Twirling Candy colt
this term. Lifetime Record: 10-5-0-0, $213,206. Click for the

Richard Migliore to Depart NYRA:
NYRA TV Analyst Richard Migliore, who rode over 4,000
winners during his career as a jockey, will be leaving his position
at NYRA TV following the Stars and Stripes Racing Festival July 8.
AI'd like to first thank NYRA for providing me with this
wonderful opportunity after my riding days were over,@ said
Migliore. AI am so proud to have been a part of one of the best
TV teams in horse racing, and I look forward to seeing NYRA TV's
continued success as a viewer. After spending so much of my life
here at these racetracks, this is certainly a bittersweet moment
and one that I have considered for quite some time. The best
thing for me and my family right now is to strike a better
balance between spending time on the farm in Millbrook with
my family and working in the industry I love."
A member of New York=s riding colony through a career that
spanned 30 years, Migliore retired from riding in June of 2010
and joined NYRA in 2011. Since that time, he has provided daily
analysis during both the NYRA simulcast as well as the nationally
televised "Saratoga Live" and "Belmont Live." Cont. p2
