Flow Assurance Business Line
All flow assurance products and capabilities now combined in one Business Line.
”Flow Assurance” ensure continous production, avoiding hydrate formation, scale and sand build-up and avoid excessive corrosion and erosion.
Roxar structure now in-line with customers internal structure; teams which advice on flow assurance does that whether for onshore, topside or subsea.

Why Internal Corrosion Monitoring? • Corrosion of pipelines and equipment can lead to
severe safety and environmental hazards
• Risk of unexpected failure
• Loss of containment of process media
• Monitor corrosivity of pipeline fluids
• Control of corrosion mitigation/inhibitors
• Monitor inhibitor effectiveness
Correlate process parameters with measured corrosion
Measure corrosion over time;
– Integrity
– Plan inspection and
– Input for (Risk based) Inspection Planning
Through improved corrosion control, justify use of
carbon steel instead of expensive, corrosion resistant
alloys.
Design monitoring system based on
actual application and needs

Why Sand/Erosion Monitoring
Sand production becomes more
critical over time for an oil/gas field
• increased water production – more
sand
• more produced gas – higher
velocities
Increased sand/erosion challenges
Purposes of Sand Monitoring: • avoid erosion damage of pipes and
process equipment due to sand
erosion
• optimize production rates to
”maximum sand free production” or
”maximum allowed ”sand production.
• avoid reservoir damage
[File Name or Event] Emerson Confidential 27-Jun-01, Slide 10
Sand Erosion Sensor
• ER elements face flow at optimum angle
• Measures erosion directly
• Superior sensitivity (+/-5 nanometers or 0.0002 mils)
• Reference element in protected location (rear)
• Multiple elements for redundancy & coverage of entire pipe
diameter
• Operates in all flow regimes
[File Name or Event] Emerson Confidential 27-Jun-01, Slide 11
Why continous monitoring?
Continous data increase information value
– More data points better accuracy, more reliable trend analysis
– Better correlation with process change for process control and actions
– Improved verification prior to corrective actions, such as process changes
Well choked back 1%,
curves flatten off
[File Name or Event] Emerson Confidential 27-Jun-01, Slide 12
Why on-line monitoring?
Real time information to user
– Alarms if corrosion or sand/erosion rates change, allowing actions before damage done
– Data provided directly to user(s) with analysis and reporting facilities
– Less labour required for data acquisition, consistent data provided independent on operator performance
[File Name or Event] Emerson Confidential 27-Jun-01, Slide 13
Why Smart Wireless ? Wireless technology makes on-line,
continous monitoring available at lower cost
– Better data, faster information
– More data – better trending
– Faster information, early actions
Increased industry acceptance
IEC 62591 – WirelessHartTM standard
– Self organizing, adaptive mesh
– Integration with other wireless applications
– Communication direct with control system or via Fieldwatch software
Wireless means no cables to be installed, maintained and (re)certified

Roxar ER probe measurement principle
Roxar use two Kelvin connections to measure the two ER probe elements.
– The first measures the measuring element, through amplifier U1 below
– The second measures the reference element, through amplifier U2 below
– Both measurements are done at the same time, ensuring the same current through both elements
– Measurements are done with current in both directions, eliminating thermovolatic effects
– Analogue to digital conversion (A/D) is done with high accuracy and resolution.
Resistance values are measured with 24 bit
resolution.
The reference resistor changes with temperature; this
is used to perform a secondary temperature
compensation if required – without a separate
temperature sensor. The element work as an RTD –
Resistance Temperature Detector, similar to a PT100
element.
As resistance values for both elements are available,
troubleshooting and analysis is simplified.
