Rowlands Gill Primary School Home Learning Pack (due to school closure) Class: Reception Week: 14
Phonics
I have attached the additional sounds for
Read Write Inc. Work through each sound,
try to think of words to match the sounds.
Put them in a sentence, can you make alien
words using these sounds.
Imagine you were on a pirate ship sailing off
to an island to look for treasure. What
would you take with you? Make a list of what
you would need to take, what treasure you
hope to find. Sound out each word using the
phonics you have learnt.
Don’t forget your telescope!
Buried treasure phonics game (See below)
Reading / Writing
Can you think of words to describe the characters in the story?? Are there
any other words with a similar meaning? Can you use any of these words to
write a sentence about a character? You can also draw your favourite
character from your description. Ask an adult if they can do it too
Message in a bottle:
Imagine that you are a pirate and have been ship wrecked on a desert island.
How are you going to call for help? Can you write a message of help and put
it in a bottle? Remember to say who and where you are. See if you can use
any of your phonics to write familiar sounds when writing your letter. When
you have finished, ask a grown up and they may have an empty bottle you
could put it in. Make sure though you don't really put it in the sea as we
don't want any more rubbish in our oceans!
Maths
This weeks’ focus will be on Measure:
Volume and capacity.
Fill up the jugs: Set up some
challenges to explore. Ask: How many
cups will fill up this jug? Which of
these containers holds the most sand?
Use lots of different containers and
water to explore how much different
containers can hold. Do the biggest
container hold the most water? Can you
make a different amount of drinks for
the pirate tea party? Label them to see
if they are full, empty, half full.
Physical Development
Can you pretend you are escaping form a
shark? Pirates used to make people walk the
plank. Set up a simple sea scene on the
floor. Maybe you could use a blue sheet of
fabric. Pirates used to make people walk the

Walk along the string or board, then if you
can walk along the string balancing a pair of
socks on your head. Is this tricky?

Understanding the world
Pirates love coins! Before you
start this activity, you will need
to freeze some coins in pots (i.e.
yoghurt pots) with water. Once
they have frozen, take the pots
out of the freezer. What can you
see inside the ice? How will we
get it out? Discuss with your child
how they can make the ice melt
quicker i.e. using hands, hair
dryer, leaving in the sun and try
out some of these ideas. Which
one made the ice melt the
quickest? Once all the coins are
free, encourage your child to
count how many there are.
Expressive Arts and Design
Can you make a mask or a hat or
anything else a pirate might use? Write
a list before you start. You can then
show what you have done but don’t be
too scary!
Make a Telescope: An essential piece of
kit for a pirate is a telescope!
Think about how you are going to design
yours so you can go on lots of pirate
adventures.
Don’t forget a pirate hat!
Can you design your own pirate ship?
Can you draw a picture of a pirate ship
and label the different parts of it?
Here are some words to start you off:
sails, bow Jolly Roger See how many
more your adult knows.
Personal Social emotional Development
Pirates are known for being unkind, can
you talk about and write how to be a
good friend and not be like a mean
pirate. Pirate Tea party: encourage
everyone in your family to join your tea
party, but you can only be good pirates!
No mean pirates allowed. Can you make
a poster to join your Pirate tea party?
Pouring drinks: Can you pour drinks for
your family. Can you make the cups
nearly full? Can you put the same
amount of juice in each cup?
We are planning the next two week’s home learning activities around Pirates.
The story to go alongside is ’Pirates love Underpants’. If you do not have the story at home you can access it on you tube at

I have included pictures of examples of work to give you an idea of some of the activities you can complete. Please continue to share
your learning on Tapestry
Thank you. EYFS Team
