Chiropody or Podiatry

There is no difference between a chiropodist and podiatrist. A podiatrist is a recognised chiropodist in other English speaking countries.

All our practitioners have obtained a podiatry degree and deal with the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the lower limb. This includes children and patients with underlying illness or conditions that put their feet and legs at high risk of further injury and disability.

The majority of patients that visit Huddersfield Chiropody make regular, periodic appointments to keep their feet in good shape but more importantly pain free.

Regular, routine appointments are important to us all as on average an adult takes 4000 to 6000 steps a day and our feet carry us the equivalent of five times around the earth In an average lifetime. From these figures it is not hard to believe that between 75% and 80% of the adult population have some form of foot problem.

Here are detailed explanations of what problems commonly enter the clinic-

An ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis) occurs when the nail pierces the flesh of the toe and causes some, if not all of the symptoms below-

• Pain and increased pain upon pressure, especially in footwear and weight from bedsheets.

• Extra tissue growth (hyper granulation) around the affected area of the toe.

• The presentation of redness, pus and inflammation with a foul odour indicates infection.

This condition can be treated conservatively and without surgical intervention depending on the severity of the problem. If the symptomatic area is beyond conservative treatment then it is best practice to permanently remove either the specific section of the nail (partial nail avulsion) or the whole nail (total nail avulsion) under local anaesthetic. Precise, regular aftercare is provided with this procedure to ensure the quickest possible healing time.

Corns are made up of hard skin that occurs over a bony prominence such as a joint.

It is usually the result of pressure or friction to the area. The central area of

the corn that appears to go deeper into the toe, isn’t something growing from inside, but is where the area of pressure is greatest. The skin thickens as a result of too much pressure usually through tight fitting footwear and therefore requires precise, medical treatment from a podiatrist to enucleate the corn.

A Verrucae is often misdiagnosed as a corn but are in fact two completely separate problems.

A Verrucae is a viral infection and can be picked up from coming into contact with the virus. To find the difference between a verrucae and a corn the usual test is to pinch the suspect area.

Verrucae are usually more painful than corns when pinched. Corns and callus are more likely to affect weightbearing areas, whereas verrucae can appear on any area.

Athlete’s foot is caused by a number of fungal species which you can pick up from anywhere (typically communal areas such as pools, showers and changing rooms) or anywhere where you may walk around barefooted.

The fungus on each bit of skin that falls away from someone else’s feet can be picked up by you if you’re prone. Symptoms can include intense itching, cracked, blistered or peeling areas of skin, redness and scaling. It can occur on moist, waterlogged skin usually between the fourth and fifth toes initially, or on dry, flaky skin around the heels or elsewhere on the foot.

Large painful fissures can also develop and the condition can also spread along all five toes and sometimes to the soles of the feet if left untreated.

Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) can affect part or all of the nail, including the

nail plate, nail bed and root of the nail. The most common sign of a fungal nail infection is the nail becoming thickened and discoloured. The nail can turn white, black, yellow or green. There is usually no pain associated with a fungal nail however if the nail is not treated then over time it can become uncomfortable.

Several factors increase the risk of a fungal nail infection developing, such as

• wearing shoes that cause your feet to get hot and sweaty

• being in a humid environment • regular damage to the nail or skin • poor health or certain health

conditions, such as diabetes or psoriasis

Would like to highly recommend Matthew the Chiropodist at Colne Valley Chiropody.

I have just arrived home from having a relaxing mini pedicure,at this this fabulous Practice tucked away in the heart of Marsden Village.

I have to be honest my feet are always hidden away so are last on my agenda when it comes to having time out- this will not be the case after today, I’m on a mission to have fab sandals feet, ready for the summer sun.

Try something new today and make your feet as much a priority as you do your hair, teeth and face... Hey Bow

First time ever visited chiropodist and it was brilliant. Very friendly and relaxing

My feet felt so much better and lighter and that was only after one visit

Will definitely be going back there Steph Dawson

I visited Colne Valley Chiropody a few weeks back... I’m on my feet at work all day and some nights and my feet had cracked baldy especially my heels ... The magic hands of Mr Butters along with the fantastic healing cream have sorted me out brilliantly... Thanks again Matt Garrety
