Bettys stroy starting in Harrogate in 1919 has made afternoon tea the height of fashion throughout

    England.

Before you enter Bettys Tea Room, you will notice the wrought iron canopy that stands above you, andfeast your eyes on the delicious cakes and window displays. Greeted with a warm welcome and led to

your table either in the Imperial Room or the Montepellier Cafe Bar, you will notice the dining style is that

of the cosmopolitan cities of Switzerland and France.

The menu is vast with selections of continental-style sandwiches and lled rolls, handmade cakes, tortes

and patisserie. Enjoy a Tea for Two with delicious scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve,

dont forget to use the tea strainer to have the perfect brew.

On a early crisp October afternoon travelling on the Route 36 surrounded by beautiful surroundings we

drove past Bettys and knew we had to venture in. The eye-catching exterior drew us in. Arriving at Bettys

we saw the stunning window displays of Halloween treats with parcels and packages, from pumpkins

    and witches to novelty biscuits.

We were welcomed and greeted by a smartly dressed waitress who led us to our table in the

Montepellier Cafe Bar. Taking in the atmosphere, enjoying the company of fellow diners of all ages, we

noticed a fond memory most of us have, a grandma and granddaughter enjoying their afternoon tea

    straight from school.

We enjoyed tea, sandwhiches and scones, with high class table service. The food was excellent

prsented on silver tiers. Our experience was more than we expected and visiting Bettys is a must.

    36 wins Route of

As i stood at the busy bus station, it was

    apparent that the 36 had

arrived. The bold bus entered the bus sta-tion with a distinct presence on the road.

From here I knew I had to speak to the

main man behind this unique bus. Speak-

ing to Nigel Eggelton (managing director)

When asked if it was the companies invi-

sion to create such a bold bus on the road

he said: Yes we did have that invisionin mind, we really wanted to create a

unique bus experience and to enjoy it

as part of their day out and not just a

    mode of transport.

Nigel also shared his delight about win-

ning the Route of the year award. Weare delighted that we have won this

award, weve workedhard to get this far

and its made very proud. This is fan-

tastic for Transdev (the bus company) and

an inspiration for future projects and other

    bus companies. Which poses questions

to whether other bus companies will copy

the idea of a luxary bus on longer routes.

We asked Nigel his thoughts on this, he

said: Were not afraid of copcats,

its just great that people look up to

what weve achieved. He then added:

    Recently transport action groups

have been pressing for more capacity

on the rail route between Harrogateand Leeds. Were not in direct com-

petition with the trains but during the

day a journey from Harrogate to Leeds

can take just 45 minutes and if your

    speaking with

bus stop and the destination are well

placed the door-to-door journey can be

    quicker on the no36.

On average there are over a hundred

people a day using the 36 bus route

and this gure is constantly growing. An

extra 20,000 extra seats a month have

are being added on the routes between

Leeds Harrogate and Ripon on the no36.Transdev has introduced more seats and

extra journeys on its agship 36 route

between Ripon, Harrogate and Leeds as

they have seen an increase in passengers

and want to provide the best quality of

travel for them. Nigel explained, Weve

seen a remarkable growth in passen-ger numbers on the no36 over the past

few years. Its a classic example of

    how modern comfortable buses with

    bright attractive interiors can encour-

age new passengers and tempt people

to leave their cars at home.Services

will now run every 15 minutes throughout

the daytime from Monday to Saturday.

After travelling on the bus a number of

times, Ive found its very comfortable and

there is more room than other buses Ive

been on. The design is exclusive to the

36 buses and at the height of modern day

technology. When asking Nigel on thethe concept of desgin and whether the

    passengers really appreciate the comfort,

as as if it attracts people to use the bus

instead of others he said: Weve been at

  • 8/2/2019 Route 36 Mag

    17/20

    the year award...Nigel Eggelton.

After hearing the news of the Onemillion pound revamp I was curi-

ous to know why they are planning

o revamp the buses further lateext year. Were looking to advance

urther in our future, with other bus

ompanies attempting to copy us and

ur concept we need to keep ahead ofhe game.

Speaking to a local bus driver ofone of the buses, he agreed the

ew buses are fantastic but he

opes the revamp will help the

    power/technical flaws the busses

urrently have. The engines arenthat powerful for the size of the

    ehicle. Nigel responded these

ueries: We are looking to focus the

evamp on enhancing the bus power

nd speed as well as technical issues

he drivers have. Theres no point in

aving a good image bus if it doesnt

    un well.

After speaking to Nigel, we have seen

e is very proud of the route 36 bus

nd it is clear the whole Transdev

he forefront with a number of innova-

ions in the last few years, not only

with the design of our buses but withatellite tracking systems to improve

eliability andan award winning iPhonepp. The extra journeys and seats arent

he end of things as well be unveiling

more exciting plans for the route in the

    ext month or so.

team have worked hard to create a

spectacular bus. It is a great accom-

plishment for local transport andthe future only looks bright for this

    company and bus travel.
