Caveats

• Traffic statistics are generated based on the information contained in police reports provided to Transportation Services. Changes in reporting or collection methodology by the police can impact reported trends.

• Many collision types and sub-types occur relatively infrequently and hence can be subject to significant sampling bias and fluctuation when examining a limited time period

• For this reason, it is important to emphasize year-over-year and long term trends, rather than focus on what may be short-term fluctuations in data.

6

Page 7: Roundtable Backgrounder Final Jan25 - Toronto · Definitions • Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) – The combination of traffic fatalities and all major injuries • Injuries –

Our Focus

• While the discussion surrounding traffic safety can at times focus on fatalities, Transportation Services believes that this is not the whole picture

• When a collision occurs, whether the incident results in a serious injury or a fatality can be a thin margin

• What matters is that the opportunity for a fatality to occur existed

• For this reason, were focused on the reduction of ‘KSI’ incidents – those where either a fatality or major injury occurred

7

Page 8: Roundtable Backgrounder Final Jan25 - Toronto · Definitions • Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) – The combination of traffic fatalities and all major injuries • Injuries –

Definitions

• Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) – The combination of traffic fatalities and all major injuries

• Injuries – Killed: Person sustains bodily injuries resulting in death. – Major Injured: A non-fatal injury severe enough to require that the

injured person be admitted to hospital, even if for observation only. – Minor Injured: A non-fatal injury requiring medical treatment at a

hospital emergency room, but not requiring hospitalization of the involved person.
