ROUGH GUIDE (FOR RESEARCH GATHERING TO COLLATE FOR GPP)1) Influence of eating junk food ( McDonalds ) on secondary school students while they are studyingGuys, this is what we discussed on Friday, do think about any possible exciting modifications, or any wild ideas! Try to think about sth that is more convenient than delivery order and related to healthy food.Vending machine with built-in refrigerator/freezerSell packaged food: nutritional, cheap, and tasty (must find recipe & menu)One package has carbo (bread/rice), vitamins, minerals, fibres (veggies), protein (frozen meat), milk/fruit juice, sauces. Got calorie and expiry date labelsNext to vending machine got microwave and condiment stationFood will be resupplied twice a week, by PSG (also responsible for buying ingredients) and students (CIP hours awarded)Incentives: every 5 receipts got 1 voucher for any canteen stallJIAYOU GUYS WE CAN DO THIS!!!Trend- Students tend to eat unhealthy food and order from Mcdonalds for delivery of such food when they are hungry when they are revising or doing homework-Worrying due to an increasing trend (provide stats)- Mac delivery getting popular -Health issues arising such as high cholesterol issues, obesity rate sharply increasing at an alarming rate- We see an urgent need to stop this and promote healthy habitual eating especially during secondary school days where CCAs and studies are hectic and where students are growing from young teens to adultsCrux of issue/context: Lack of choices of food to satisfy ones needs when studying students tend to think of Mcdonald delivery when they are hungry when studying.-In local context Mcdelivery is fast, cheap and efficient and there is an increasing number of chains of McDonalds restaurants that caters delivery right to ones doorstep.Reasons for such a scenario:1) Lack of alternatives(consider substitute goods, apply econs), students hate healthy food as it is generally unpleasant and less satisfying compared to a good Mac meal2)Macs successful advertising ,ranging from online webpages, campaigns and TV advertisements - catchy, portraying a sense of satisfaction of customers who order food from Mac and promoting new products from Mac3)It starts from young!! old habits die hard. Increasing number of young kids dining in Mac or ordering food from Mac (e.g. happy meals with the toy in it attracts kids who are not health conscious)4) Lack of consumerism awareness, lack of health consciousness, lack of courage to try other food5)Its fast, cheap and efficient nobody beats Mac delivery6)There are many outlets in Singapore (almost every street/shopping mall have one)CONDUCT A SURVEY TARGETING SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTSCONDUCT INTERVIEWSSUPPORT ALL FACTS WITH STATISTICS AND FIGURESPositive Impact 1) Students get the most satisfaction when eating Mac meals (quote sources and facts to support claim)2)Students do not need to personally walk to buy their meals which may break their train of thoughts3)Do not need to bear the pain of hunger as food is efficiently delivered within a short time4) Extremely convenient, just a phone call or online order away5)To many students, McDonalds outlets provide conducive environment for them to study, plus they like to go in groups and can discuss in macs, while in other studying areas like library they must keep quiet and all, so macs is very convenient place to studyNegative ImpactHEALTH PROBLEMS (SHOW CREDIBILITY BY USING ONLY RELIABLE SOURCES)- excessive consumption of junk food leads to undesirable consequences, such as risks of high cholesterol, diabetes and kidney failure-heart problems, cardiac arrest, stroke and subsequently, death!-An unhealthy cyclic practise , especially when one is undergoing puberty- Results in fatigueness, lack of concentration overtime due to deficiency in vitamins and antioxidants to keep the mind active - Laziness to even walk and buy foodSolutions to Expand Positive Impact- Home prepared food service which advocate healthy alternatives to Mac delivery-an online service where students can access and place orders of healthy food to be delivered right to their place-make replicas of food (webpage must show pictures of the food that looks tantalising and yet healthy to attract students)-e.g. salads, chicken wrap with a lot of vegetables, fruity snacks, beans, assorted organic nuts...etccome out with combo meals tooconsider healthy food from subway -publicity: posters? advertisements? set up booths in schools where they can sample all the healthy food and realise how tasty it is lol-Allow access of certain recipes to such healthy meals- Create a recipe book for sale at affordable price in the school bookshop- More homec lessons during curriculum to teach students about healthy eating habits when studying-- HEALTHY TUESDAY (similar to meatless monday), canteen vendors are to have a special menu every tuesdays which is based on healthy recipes (these recipes can be obtained from our recipe book) (this can easily be implemented in every sch, we only have to interact with the PSG)ORset up a booth in the canteen, where we sell our own small combos (these booths can be handled by PSG/CIP students and PSG can make prepare these food packs in the morning before sch starts, they follow the sample combo that we will make, ingredients also to be bought by them, ingredients will be simple eg fruits/bread/etc, food can be warmed in a small oven also before selling)ORstudents go around giving out fruits/healthy sandwiches/healthy drinks etc every tuesday (very cheap, students only need to purchase the food from a supermarket as no preparation is required)-Campaign: FOOD CHALLENGEschools compete against each other where points are given to them when students order healthy food from our website or other websites we standardiseor they can also design their own healthy food!!!The schools which hit a specific target points will be recognised and a healthy eating award /student well-being award will be given to them (Glenys likes this!)Solutions to Diminish Negative Impact-Allow students to watch the movie supersize me to make them realise the true danger of eating such food regularly-Introduce them to calorie calculator apps (http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm), students know the amt of calories they need daily, food sold in the canteen can have labels that inform students abt the calories, those who consume exactly the same amt of calories as the target can have rewards, eg discount for healthy food?create health awareness posters like these (catchy and influences the mind)
