We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men

are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator

with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life,

liberty and the pursuit of happiness, wrote Thomas Jef-

ferson as the preamble to the Constitution.

Two hundred and thirty-six years ago on July 4th, 56

American patriots signed a document absolving their al-

legiance to the British crown to proclaim self-evident

truths about individual liberties. In so doing, they risked

their lives, fortune and honor.

The Declaration of Independence gave birth to a new

nation, establishing democratic principles that continue

to govern the American way of life and remain the guid-

ing hope of people to this day.

Years before the Declaration of Independence was

signed, the tension between the American colonies and

Great Britain began rising as American colonists began

wishing for their own sovereignty and to no longer fall

under British rule.

One of the main reasons the colonists wanted to break

free was because of taxation without representation.

The British government imposed taxes on the colo-

nists, despite them not consenting or having any actual

representative deliver their views when the taxation deci-

sion was made.

Several incidents and prolonged anger with the British

led the American colonists to revolt.

In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act, granting the

financially troubled British East India Company a trade

monopoly on the tea exported to the American colonies.

This led to the infamous Boston Tea Party on Decem-

ber 16, 1773, where men dressed as Native Americans

dumped all the tea from the ships into the ocean.

The Revolutionary War began with the first shots on

April 19, 1775. Part of the British occupation force in

Boston marched to the nearby town of Concord, Mass.,

to seize a colonial militia arsenal. Militiamen of Lexing-

ton and Concord intercepted them and attacked. The war

had kicked off with the shot heard around the world.

The war lasted from 1775 to 1783 and cost the lives of

more than 25,000 American men as they fought various

battles ranging from the Battle of Lexington to Valley

Forge and the siege of Yorktown to gain independence,

freedom and a better way of life for all.

The war came to an official close in September 1783

when the Americans and British negotiated the Peace of

Paris treaty in France. The treaty recognized the Ameri-

cans as a new and independent country. The last British

forces departed New York in November 1783, leaving

the proud American people in full control of their new

nation.
