▲ When removing and installingwheels, use wheel handlingequipment adequate for theweight involved.

Keep RidersOff Machinery▲ Riders obstruct the operator’s

view, they could be struck byforeign objects or thrown from themachine.

▲ Never allow children to operateequipment.

Avoid HighPressure Fluids Hazard▲ Escaping fluid under pressure can

penetrate the skin causingserious injury.

▲ Avoid the hazard by relievingpressure before disconnectinghydraulic lines or performing workon the system.

b. Spray soapy water on the surface where the label is tobe placed.

c. Peel backing from label. Press firmly onto the surface.

d. Squeeze out air bubbles with the edge of a credit cardor with a similar type straight edge.

This Rotary Tiller has been designed with care and builtby skilled workers using quality materials. Properassembly, maintenance, and safe operating practices willhelp you get years of satisfactory use from this machine.

ApplicationThe RTA10 and RTA15 Series Rotary Tillers aredesigned and built by Land Pride to till the soil forseedbed and planting preparation. They are adapted for540rpm PTO, three-point hitch Category 1 mounting andare Quick-Hitch adaptable. The RTA10 Series have a17-25 horsepower tractor requirement, while the RTA15has a 17-50 horsepower requirement. These Land PrideRotary Tiller have uses and applications in landscaping,nurseries, gardens, and light commercial use.

Dealer Preparations

! CAUTIONTo avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller,securely support tiller on safe supporting stands or blocks!

This unit is shipped almost completely assembled.Carefully follow instructions for final assembly.

Before attempting assembly check the following items.Having all the needed parts and equipment readily athand will speed up your assembly task and will make thejob as safe as possible.

• Check for fasteners and pins that were shipped withthe tiller. All hardware coming from the factory hasbeen installed in the location where it will be used. If apart or fastener is temporarily removed for assemblyreasons, remember where it goes. Keep the partsseparated.

• Have a fork lift or loader along with chains and safetystands that are sized for the job ready for the assemblytask.

• Have a minimum of 2 people at hand during assembly.


Tractor RequirementsTractor horsepower should be within the range notedbelow. Tractors outside the horsepower range must notbe used.

Torque RequirementsCheck to see that all nuts are tightened. Refer to “TorqueValues Chart” on page 33 to determine the correct torquevalue when tightening hardware during assembly.

Parking Stand AssemblyRefer to Figure 1-1:

! CAUTIONTo avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller,stabilize unit with parking stand and support blocks!

1. Insert parking stand (#13) into parking stand holderon the end of the tiller frame.

2. Adjust parking stand to a height that will support thetiller level while resting on its skid shoes.

3. Secure parking stand with wire retaining pin (#14).Make sure wire retainer is hooked over the end of theretaining pin.

Hitch, Driveline Guard & Rear ChainRefer to Figure 1-1 on page 9:1. Install top 3-Point hitch plates (#6 & #7) to outside of

gearbox mounting frame with 5/8" x 1 1/2" bolts (#3),5/8" lockwashers (#4), and 5/8" nuts (#5). Do nottighten hardware at this time.

2. Install spacer (#9) between upper 3-Point hitchplates (#6 & #7) with 3/4" x 4" long bolt (#8), lockwasher (#29), and hex nut (#30).

3. Securely tighten all bolts to the correct torque.

4. Install driveline guard (#10) on backside of 3-Pointhitch plates with four 1/4" wing screws (#11).

5. Mount left-hand clevis (#15) over square tube asshown. Make certain the longer chamfered edge onthe clevis is positioned on the bottom.

6. Locate u-bolt (#16) behind the square tube andinsert through clevis (#15) holes as shown.

7. Secure with 1/2"-13 hex nylock nuts (#17). Do nottighten nuts at this time.

NOTE: Remove driveline guard to make accessingdriveline connection at the gearbox easier.

8. Insert lower hitch pin (#18) into clevis and securewith linch pin (#19).

9. Repeat step 5 through 8 for the right-hand clevis.

10. Position clevis 26 7/8" apart from inside of clevisplate to inside of clevis plate and center off gearboxinput shaft. See “RTA10 Tiller Hitch Offset” or“RTA15 Tiller Hitch Sideshift” on page 18 whenoffsetting tiller to the right.

11. Tighten 1/2" nuts (#17) to the correct torque.

12. Install manual tube (#20) to hitch plate (#7) with two1/4"-20 x 1 GR5 hex head cap screws (#21), SAE flatwashers (#22), and hex nylock nut (#23).

13. Tighten 1/4" cap screws (#21) to the correct torque.

14. Insert u-bolt (#25) through chain (#24).

15. Install two 3/8" nuts (#26), two lock washers (#27),and two flat washers (#28) onto the u-bolt an equaldistance from the end.

16. Insert u-bolt through deflector shield and secure withtwo 3/8" flat washers (#28), and hex nuts (#26).Tighten nuts to the correct torque.

17. Attach opposite end of chain to slot “A” shown inFigure 3-3 on page 19.

Tractor Hook-UpRefer to Figure 1-2:

! DANGERA Crushing Hazard exists when hooking-up equipment to atractor. Do not allow anyone to stand between tractor andimplement while backing-up to implement. Do not operatehydraulic 3-Point lift controls while someone is directlybehind the tractor or near the implement.

! WARNINGLifting unit more than 14" above ground with PTO engaged orengaging PTO with unit higher than 14" above ground canbreak the driveline and could cause flying projectiles.

! CAUTIONTo avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller,stabilize unit with parking stand and support blocks!


Tractor HFigur

Refer to Figure 1-2:1. Back tractor up to tiller until lower 3-Point lift arms are

aligned with tiller hitch clevises.

2. Secure tractor’s 3-Point lower hitch arms to the lowerhitch clevises using 7/8" diameter hitch pins. Securehitch pins with linch pins.

3. Secure tractor’s top center link to tiller hitch platesusing 3/4" diameter hitch pin (supplied by customer).

4. Place a level on the end plate and adjust tractor’s topcenter link to level tiller from front to back.

5. Place level on the square tube and adjust one of thetwo tractor’s lower 3-Point arms up or down to leveltiller from left to right.

6. Raise tiller up and remove parking stand from itsmounting tube. Turn parking stand upside down andreinsert it several inches through the top of themounting tube. Secure parking stand using one ofthe upper three holes with existing wire retaining pin.

7. Raise tiller fully up with 3-Point lift. Measure thedistance tines are off the ground. If distance exceeds14", adjust tractor’s 3-Point lift height limiter untiltines will not lift higher than 14 inches off the ground.

8. Continue with “Driveline Installation” on page 11.

IMPORTANT: To keep from bending the parkingstand, always store stand upside down in its bracketright after hooking-up tiller to a tractor.

Driveline InstallationRefer to Figure 1-3, Figure 1-4 and Figure 1-5:The tiller driveline is coupled to the tractor and implementshafts with either push pin couplers, pull collar couplersor a combination of both, and with either a shear bolt orslip clutch on one end for protection from shock loads.

Always engage PTO at low engine rpm to minimizestart-up torque. Drivelines with friction slip clutchesmust go through a “run-in” operation prior to initialuse and after long periods of inactivity. See“Driveline Protection” on page 21 for detailedinstructions on maintaining the slip clutch.

1. Park tractor and tiller on a level surface. Raise tiller toalign gearbox input shaft level with tractor PTO shaft.Securely block tiller at this height to keep unit fromlowering while attaching the driveline.

2. Place gear selector in park, shut tractor engine off,set park brake, and remove switch key.

3. Remove gearbox shaft protector from end of gearboxshaft and slide slip clutch end of driveline overgearbox input shaft. Secure to gearbox with drivelineyoke locking device.

4. Slide other end of driveline over tractor PTO shaft.Secure driveline with yoke locking device.

5. Move driveline yokes back and forth to ensure bothends are secured to the shafts. Reattach any yokethat is loose.

Check Driveline Collapsible Length

IMPORTANT: The tractor’s PTO shaft and tillergearbox shaft must be aligned and level with eachother during installation of driveline. This alignmentis the shortest distance between the two shafts.

Transporting

! CAUTIONWhen traveling on public roads whether at night or during theday, use accessory lights and devices for adequate warning tooperators of other vehicles. Comply with all federal, state, andlocal laws.

1. When raising tiller to transport position, be sure thatthe driveline does not contact tractor or tiller. Adjustthe tractor’s 3-Point hitch lift height so that the tillertines are not lifted more than 14 inches off the groundto prevent damage to the driveline.

2. Remove wire retaining pin from parking stand andparking stand from support tube. Reinsert parkingstand several inches upsidedown into support tubeand secure with wire retaining pin using one of thethree holes in the parking stand. Make certain wireretainer is caught over end of pin.

3. Be sure to reduce tractor ground speed whenturning, and leave enough clearance so the tillerdoes not contact obstacles such as buildings, trees,or fences.

4. Select a safe ground travel speed when transportingfrom one area to another. When traveling onroadways, transport in such a way that faster movingvehicles may pass you safely.

5. When traveling over rough or hilly terrain, shift tractorto a lower gear.

IMPORTANT: Make sure all safety labels are in theirproper location and in good condition beforeoperation. Follow all directions on the safety labels.

IMPORTANT: Do not alter tiller in a way which willadversely affect its performance or reliability or usethe tiller for a purpose for which it was not designed.

IMPORTANT: To keep parking stand from becomingbent while tilling soil, always store it upside down inits mount right after hitching tiller to a tractor.

IMPORTANT: Always disengage PTO before raisingtiller to transport position.



General Operating NotesBefore beginning to till the following inspection should beperformed:

1. Check oil level in gearbox and chaincase. Refer to“Lubrication” on page 25.

2. Check that all plugs have been replaced properly inthe gearbox and chaincase.

3. Be sure all tiller tines, bolts, and nuts are tight.

4. Be certain all guards, shields, and dirt deflectors arein place and secure.

5. Grease driveline shaft and all other grease fittings.Refer to “Lubrication” on page 25.

6. Clear area to be tilled of rocks, branches, and otherforeign objects.

7. Tall grass and weeds should be mowed before tilling.

8. Do not engage PTO at full throttle. Once engaged,increase throttle to 540 PTO speed. Tiller tines willcut better at 540 PTO speed than at reduced throttle.

9. Tilling should not be done in wet conditions as soilwill stick to tines.

10. At first begin tilling at a slow forward speed and shiftup as ground conditions warrant.

11. Operated tiller with deck level to the ground.

12. Tiller should be operated with the tiller deck level tothe ground.

13. Tiller tines will cut better when operating the tractorat full 540 rpm PTO speed than at reduced throttle.

14. After tilling the first 50 feet, stop and check to see thatthe tiller is adjusted properly.

15. Do not make turns or attempt to back up while tiller isin the ground. See important note below.

16. Do not engage PTO with machine in the fully raisedor lowered position.

17. Periodically check for foreign objects wrappedaround the rotor shaft and remove them afterdisengaging PTO, turning off tractor engine, andremoving ignition key.

IMPORTANT: Turning or backing up with rotary tinesin the ground will damage the tiller.

ParkingThe following steps should be done when preparing to storethe tiller or unhitch it from the tractor.

Refer to Figure 2-1:1. Reposition left-hand skid shoe (#3) by:

a. Loosening bolt (#1) and removing bolt (#2).

b. Pivot skid shoe down and replace bolt (#2) in thetop hole as shown.

c. Tighten bolts (#1 & #2) to the correct torque.

2. Repeat step #1 for the right-hand skid shoe.

3. Set parking stand to desired height to maintain tillerheight for re-hook-up and install pin to lock in place.

4. Park tiller on a level, solid area.

5. Shut tractor engine off and engage parking brake.

6. Unhitch from tractor.

! WARNINGPlace support blocks under tiller as needed to prevent unitfrom tipping over onto a child and/or an adult. A tiller that tipsover can result in injury or death.

7. Check tiller for stability by physically applyingpressure at the hitch plates to see if it will tip forwardor backwards. If the tiller moves in either direction,then block under the tiller as needed to prevent thatmovement.

8. See “Storage” on page 24 for additional informationon long term storage of your tiller.

IMPORTANT: It is important to adjust the skid shoesdown as shown in Figure 2-1 to stabilize the tillerwhen parked. Always follow “Skid Shoe Adjustment”steps on page 20 when repositioning the skid shoes.

General Operating InstructionsBefore using your Land Pride RTA10 or RTA15 SeriesRotary Tiller, you should have completely read theOperator’s Manual, properly attached the tiller to thetractor, cut the driveline to proper length, run-in theclutch, and gone through the Operating Checklist. If youhave missed any of these steps, please complete thembefore proceeding.

Now that you have properly prepared yourself and yourtiller, it’s time to do some tilling. Carefully drive the tractorto the site where you intend to till. You should havealready cleaned this site of any large limbs, rocks,trash, metal, or other debris. Best results will beachieved if you have mounted your tiller offset to the rightfar enough to cover the tread of your right tractor wheel.Line the tractor up just to the right of center on your tillageplot. You will be working from the center out and alwaysturning to the right to line up for your next pass.

Lower the tiller half way to the ground and reduce yourtractor engine speed to about one quarter throttle.Engage the PTO and gradually increase the enginespeed until you reach full PTO speed of 540 rpm. Lowertiller to the ground and simultaneously commenceforward travel of approximately 2 mph. Do not make turnsor attempt to back up while tiller is in the ground. Seeimportant note below.

Travel about 50 ft. and then stop to check your results.When stopping, remember to lift the tiller out of theground, stop the tractor, reduce engine speed,disengage the PTO, set the park brake, shut off thetractor, and remove the keys. If you are tilling too shallowor too deep, adjust the skid shoes accordingly. If the soiltexture is too coarse, lower the leveling door and reduceyour ground speed. If the soil texture is too fine, you willneed to raise your leveling door and increase yourground speed. For any other problem conditions that mayarise, you will want to refer to the Troubleshooting sectionon page 31.

When you are done tilling for the day, make sure you useproper tractor shut down procedures before you get off ofthe tractor. If you are detaching your tiller, make sure youpark it on a dry and level surface leaving it clean andready for the next use. When you put your tiller up for theseason, make sure you refer to the Storage Directions onpage 24.

With a little practice and a few adjustments, you will soonbe achieving the results you want with your Land PrideRotary Tiller. See “Features and Benefits” Section 6or “Specifications and Capacities” Section 5 foradditional information and performance enhancingoptions.

RTA10 Tiller Hitch OffsetRefer to Figure 3-1:

! CAUTIONDo exceed offsetting the RTA10 Series tiller 7" left or right ofthe gearbox input shaft. Exceeding 7" can break the driveline,tractor PTO and tiller gearbox.

! CAUTIONAfter offsetting, check to see that the driveline clears allshields on the tiller, tractor, and tiller hitch. If not, decreaseoffset until clearance is obtained.

Except for RTA1042, the tillers can be shifted a maximumoffset of 7" left or right of the gearbox input shaft bymoving the hitch clevises (#1) 7" to the right or left.

The RTA1042 is built to be offset 26" to the right when thehitch clevis are set an equal distance away from thegearbox input shaft. The unit can be shifted a maximumof 7" to the left by moving the hitch clevis 7" to the right.

For best tillage results, adjust tiller offset to the right bymoving the hitch clevis to the left far enough to cover thetractor’s right rear wheel tread marks.

1. Loosen hex nuts (#2) until clevises (#1) can bemoved on the front tube.

2. Slide lower hitch clevises (#1) an equal amount leftor right up to 7" while holding the 26 7/8" distancebetween clevises.

3. Retighten hex nuts (#2) to the correct torque value.

Drive Chain TensionRefer to Figure 3-4:

The tension on the drive chain can be easily adjusted byusing the chain tightener stud. Should backlash occur,the following should be done.

1. Loosen R.H. nut by turning it counterclockwise.

2. Torque stud clockwise to 20 - 30 foot pounds.

3. Tighten right-hand nut clockwise to 400 ft-lbs. Besure to hold stud in position while tightening nut.

Skid Shoe AdjustmentRefer to Figure 3-5:The skid shoes can be adjusted to the desired tillingdepth by raising or lowering them as follows:

1. Raise tiller off the ground. Place a support under thetiller (not under the skid shoes) and lower the tilleronto the support. Make certain the tiller is secureresting on the support before working on or aroundthe tiller.

2. Always place tractor in park, set tractor brakes, shuttractor engine off, and remove switch key beforedismounting the tractor.

3. Loosen pivot bolt (#1) at the shoe’s front.

4. Remove adjusting bolt (#2) at the shoe’s rear.

5. Adjust skid shoe (#3) to desired location.

MaintenanceProper servicing and adjustment is the key to the long lifeof any implement. With careful inspection and routinemaintenance, you can avoid costly downtime and repair.

The parts on your Rotary Tiller have been speciallydesigned and should only be replaced with genuine LandPride parts. Do not alter the tiller in a way which willadversely affect its performance.

Check all bolts and pins after using the unit for severalhours and on a regular basis thereafter to ensure theyare tight and secured.

Replace worn, damaged, or illegible safety labels byobtaining new labels from your Land Pride dealer.

! CAUTIONFor safety reasons, each maintenance operation must beperformed with tractor PTO disengaged, tiller loweredcompletely to the ground or onto support blocks, tractorengine shut off, and ignition key removed.

Tine ReplacementRefer to Figure 4-1:

! WARNINGWorn tines may be very sharp!

1. Remove the 2 hex head cap screws and fastenersfrom the tine being replaced and then remove tine.

2. Attach new tine to the mounting flange makingcertain it is positioned so that the cutting edgecrosses over the mounting flange and leads inrotation as shown in Figure 4-1.

3. Replace removed cap screws and nuts. Tighten nutsto the proper torque.

Driveline ProtectionTiller drive components are protected from shock loadswith either a two plate friction clutch or a shear bolt.Shear bolt protection is discussed on page 23.

Friction clutches should be “run-in” prior to initialoperation and after long periods of inactivity to removeany oxidation that may have accumulated on the frictionsurfaces. Repeat “run-in” instructions at the beginning ofeach season and when moisture and/or condensationseizes the inner friction plates.

Refer to Figure 4-2 below and Figure 4-3 on page 23 todetermine which friction clutch your tiller has. Followrun-In, disassembly, and assembly instructions for yourspecific clutch.

exposed edges of the clutch plates and friction disks.

2. Tighten all 4 nuts uniformly until spring load is lowenough that the clutch slips freely with PTOengaged.

3. Start tractor and engage PTO for 2-3 seconds topermit slippage of clutch surfaces. Disengage PTO,then re-engage a second time for 2-3 seconds.Disengage PTO, shut off tractor, and remove key.Wait for all components to stop before dismountingfrom tractor.

4. Inspect clutch and ensure that the scribed markingsmade on the clutch plates have changed position.Slippage has not occurred if any two marks on thefriction disk and plate are still aligned. A clutch thathas not slipped must be disassembled to separatethe friction disk plates. See “Clutch Disassembly &Assembly” on page 22.

Refer to Figure 4-2 (View - B):5. Turn all 4 nuts fully back if no two marks on the

friction disk and plate are still aligned. Clutch is readyfor use.

6. The clutch should be checked during first hour oftilling and periodically each week. An additional setof scribe marks can be added to check for slippage.

2. Cycle clutch on and off 5 or 6 times (15 seconds onand 15 seconds off) with the engine operating at halfthrottle. Disengage driveline, shut off tractor, andremove key. Wait for all components to stop beforedismounting from tractor.

3. Tighten hex head socket bolts fully back. Clutch isready for use

f. Bearing (#9)

4. Inspect all components and replace to their originalposition. Make certain stop flange (#5) is replacedwith its flanges in its original position. See importantnote in Figure 4-4.

5. Fully tighten all 8 hex head socket bolts (#4).

StorageClean, inspect, service, and make necessary repairs tothe Rotary Tiller when parking it for long periods andwhen parking it at the end of a working season. This willhelp ensure that the tiller is ready for field use the nexttime you hook-up to it.

! DANGERAlways disconnect main driveline from tractor PTO andsecure tiller in the up position with solid supports beforeservicing underside of tiller. PTO can be engaged if tractor isstarted resulting in damage to tiller, bodily injury, or death.

1. Clean off any dirt and grease that may haveaccumulated on the Rotary Tiller. Scrape offcompacted dirt and then wash surfaces thoroughlywith a garden hose.

2. Check the tines for wear and replace if necessary.See Tine Replacement earlier in this section.

3. Inspect the tiller for loose, damaged or worn partsand adjust or replace if needed.

4. Lubricate as noted in “Lubrication” on page 25.

5. Drain and refill gearbox and chaincase oil. Be sure toreplace all oil plugs.

• Drain oil in gearbox by removing the bottom drainplug or right-hand cap.

• Drain oil in chaincase by removing the bottom plugand tipping tiller backwards.

6. Replace all damaged or missing decals.

7. Store tiller on a level surface in a clean, dry place.Inside storage will reduce maintenance and make fora longer tiller life.

8. Follow all parking instructions on page 16 whendisconnecting tractor from tiller.

9. Repaint parts where paint is worn or scratched toprevent rust. Ask your dealer for Land Pride Aerosoltouch-up paint. They are also available in touch-upbottles with brush, quarts, and gallon sizes by addingTU, QT, or GL to the end of the Aerosol part number.

A coating of oil may be applied to worn surfaces in lieu ofpainting to minimize oxidation.

This Warranty does not apply to any part or product which in Land Pride’sjudgment shall have been misused or damaged by accident or lack of normalmaintenance or care, or which has been repaired or altered in a way whichadversely affects its performance or reliability, or which has been used for apurpose for which the product is not designed. Claims under this Warranty must be made to the dealer which originally soldthe product and all warranty adjustments must be made through such dealer. LandPride reserves the right to make changes in materials or design of the product atany time without notice.

This Warranty shall not be interpreted to render Land Pride liable for damagesof any kind, direct, consequential, or contingent to property. Furthermore, LandPride shall not be liable for damages resulting from any cause beyond itsreasonable control. This Warranty does not extend to loss of crops, any expenseor loss for labor, supplies, rental machinery or for any other reason.

No other warranty of any kind whatsoever, express or implied, is madewith respect to this sale; and all implied warranties of merchantability andfitness for a particular purpose which exceed the obligations set forth in thiswritten warranty are hereby disclaimed and excluded from this sale.

This Warranty is not valid unless registered with Land Pride within 30 days fromthe date of purchase by the end user.
