PROBLEM

• Congenital heart disease is a serious and common cause of life threatening morbidity amongst children in India.

Page 5: Rotary Shaniniketan

• The statistics are frightening. It is estimated that every year 1,80,000 children are born with heart defects!

• For every thousand children under the age of 15 years, four have congenital heart disease.

Page 6: Rotary Shaniniketan

Without treatment • Many will die early in life. • Some will gradually waste away in suffering.

Page 7: Rotary Shaniniketan

GOOD NEWS

• Most of these children can be treated, usually with surgery,

• Add many decades of productive life• Obvious benefit to the child and the family, • Potential contribution to society!

Page 8: Rotary Shaniniketan

India is rapidly becoming an advanced country.

Page 9: Rotary Shaniniketan

• All modalities of modern medical treatment now exist in the country.

• These advanced facilities are not available to the majority of the population, for reasons of poverty and for logistical reasons of distance to the facilities.

Page 10: Rotary Shaniniketan

• The poor village folk have very little chance of advanced medical care.

• Heart surgery itself is fairly esoteric and also expensive.

• Children’s heart surgery even more so.

Page 11: Rotary Shaniniketan

In the west paediatric cardiac surgery is not only a super-speciality but an ultra-super-speciality, done at supra-regional, that is quaternary care centers

Page 12: Rotary Shaniniketan

At present there are only a handful of centres in the country which have the facilities and infrastructure to correctly diagnose, give proper management and ultimately successfully operate on small children with heart defects.

Page 13: Rotary Shaniniketan

• Successful paediatric cardiac care (including surgery) requires expensive equipment, high-grade environment, and of course highly skilled man power

• The cost of surgery in these hospitals average around $3,000 to $3,500. (compared to $30,000 to $100,000 in USA).
