WORLD UNDERSTANDING

MONTH

This month is a great chance for every Rotarian to pause, plan, & promote the

Fourth Avenue of Service –Rotary’s continued quest to promote goodwill,

peace, & understanding among people of the world.

Thank you for making a difference around the world with your dedication &

commitment!

Page 2: ROTARY NOTES - Microsoft · So in the face of disappointment, we should adopt a more forgiving posture. As Elbert Green Hubbard, a writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher once

If you read your

newsletter, you’ll recall that

Lauren Kramer was actually

listed to do Fellowship during

the 35th week of Rotary Year

2018-2019. In reality, Andy

Bednar kind of volunteered her

because he thought he was

going to be away at a meeting.

Since he thought nearly all of

us would be disappointed that

it was he in front of us

instead of Lauren, he decided

to embrace the situation and

talk to us about

disappointment!

We’ve all experienced it

at least once or twice in our lives. . .

Disappointment is that feeling of sadness or displeasure that

seems to haunt us when our hopes, aspirations, or expectations are

not fulfilled. Disappointment can break down your spirit. However,

as all of us know, you have to face a fair share of disappointments and

setbacks while you are trudging on the path of success.

Disappointment seems to know no bounds. Businessman Jim Fiebig

once said that “age does not diminish the extreme disappointment of

having a scoop of ice cream fall from the cone.”

It has been said before that when the center of the universe is

finally discovered, a lot of people are going to be very disappointed

that they are not it.

So in the face of disappointment, we should adopt a more forgiving

posture. As Elbert Green Hubbard, a writer, publisher, artist, and

philosopher once said, “Don’t take life too seriously. You won’t get out

of it alive anyway.”

Or maybe you prefer the words of anthropologist Margaret Mead

who once said, “Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just

like everyone else.”

But maybe it is really up to us to turn around our disappointments.

Maybe we can learn a little something from, of all things, a duck.

At this point, Andy shared a story he once heard. . .

A little duck entered a bar one day, sauntered up to the bartender

and asked, “Got any gwapes?” “No, sorry,” the bartender replied. The

duck left the bar, disappointed. The next day, the duck walked into the

bar and asked again, “Got any gwapes?” The bartender answered angrily,

“I told you yesterday, no, I don’t!” The duck left even more

disappointed. The following day, the duck walked into the bar once again

and asked, “Got any gwapes?” “No! I told you, I do not have any

grapes,” the bartender responded. “If you dare to come in here one

more time and ask for grapes, I’m going to nail your feet to the floor!”

The very next day, the duck waddled into the bar yet again. As the

bartender eyed him suspiciously, he asked, “Got any nails?” “No, why?”

asked the bewildered bartender. The duck responded, “Got any gwapes,

then?”

FIX US INITIATIVE

Paul Stebbins is a founder,

former CEO, and Chairman

Emeritus of World Fuel Services,

a Fortune 100 Company based

in Miami, Florida.

Paul, and his guest Rachael

Heisler of Pittsburgh, PA, joined

the Rotary Club of Warren for

a conversation about America’s

perilous fiscal and political

situation. Trillion dollar deficits

are set to return within the

next year, and our already record high national debt will skyrocket over the

coming decade, according to Stebbins.

Stebbins, a founding member of the Fix US initiative with the

Campaign to Fix the Debt, reported how he feels the political environment

surrounding our debt and federal budget have come to symbolize the

brokenness of our political system. He explained that we live in a world

that knows nothing about the 4-Way Test. Rather, according to Stebbins,

and as Hubert Humphrey once said, ”Washington, D.C. is 26,000 miles

surrounded by reality.”

Stebbins first got interested in the national debt when he was a

member of a business roundtable. As the debt has multiplied over the

years, the economy of America has been undermined, and there is now a

deep and profound threat to the livelihood of our citizens. The Committee

for a Responsible Federal budget, an independent, non-profit, bipartisan

public policy organization in Washington, D.C. proposed to address federal

budget and fiscal issues by lowering tax rates, attracting capital to the

United States, and building a stabilized Medicare/Medicaid System.

However, However, we need to compromise in order to solve problems, and instead,

ideology and rigidity got in the way.

In addition to the national debt, the future of K – 12 education, energy independence & fertile water are being threatened in the United

States. Stebbins claims that we have been warned about these things, but

we keep making the same mistakes. Political dysfunction has caused us to

fail to invest in education, infrastructure, and science and technology, and nothing is being done to fix this.

Yet, research shows that 78% of Americans want Democrats and

Republicans to work together. Only 19% of Americans feel that Congress

is functional. 8% of progressive activists and 6% of committed

conservatives are certain that they each have the right answers and don’t

want to compromise. The exhausted majority are left in the middle.

Stebbins says that, like in the Wizard of Oz, we’re all looking for the

answers that will fix the problems. However, the heart, the brain, and

the courage aren’t there.

Fixus.org was formed as the place to build a community around the

principle that compromise and problem solving is a value and to let citizens

know that we have more power than we’ve been led to believe. Abraham

Lincoln’s message in his second address to Congress emphasized that it is

not enough that we imagine we can be better. It only matters if we be

better. Our sin is our tolerance. Thus, Stebbins encourages citizens to

demand a different kind of conversation from our public representatives

and organize a larger movement to take back our country. He said that we

can have these kinds of conversations through community groups, civic

organizations, and conferences.
