Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! What a great meeting this week! Chris
Shape was back just in time for birthday cake, Nick Verina and Rob Berk
filled in on Fellowship and ALL five of our proposed members were in
attendance today. Just doesn’t get any better than that!
Rob and Nick kicked off the meeting with information on the various ways
a person could lose weight….Adkins, South Beach, low fat, no fat, low
calorie, liposuction, gastric bands….more ways than we could come up with
in an entire meeting. And they topped it off with a huge platter of
cookies from Mocha House! Losing weight is something none of us did at
this week’s meeting, that’s for sure!!!
Our guests this week were: John Brown, Christine Cope, Steve Schubert,
Joe Morgan, and Ben Moody….all who are ready to be inducted.
Expressions of Concern – Please keep Barry and Leanna Dunaway’s family
in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with a family tragedy.
Sometimes prayers are the only thing to bring comfort and we are sure
they will appreciate them at this difficult time.
Rotary on the Road – Mark your calendars that on
May 3 our club lunch meeting will be held at
Children’s Rehab in Howland. Lunch will be provided
by Panera Bread. Sign-up sheets were sent around
today and will be sent around again next week.
Remember, if you sign up for lunch and don’t show up that day, you will be
expected to pay the $10 anyway. If you can’t be at a meeting to sign up
for lunch, contact either Kim Straniak or Dave Smith to make your lunch
reservation.
RI International Convention – As you know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein, Bob Hoy and Dallas
Woodall are making plans to attend to represent the club. Julia said that
Geoff Goll from Salem has reserved a block of rooms for the event and if
anyone else is planning to attend, they should make reservations ASAP.
Only three of these rooms are left. The Convention will be held from
June 10 to 14, 2017. The deadline for early registration is passed, but it’s
not too late to get registered. Expect to hear more about the upcoming
convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.

Our Centennial---Andy Bednar again shared
information with us about how we will be
celebrating our Centennial next year. He will be
taking a three-pronged approach to the
celebration:
All year
--We will be learning more about the history of the Rotary Club of
Warren
--We will be generating a portable Warren Rotary History Museum
The Month of January 2018
--We will have special programs celebrating our accomplishments
--We will have our weekly club meeting on Monday, January 29 (the first
date Warren Rotary ever met) in place of our regular Wednesday meeting

Code of
Conduct
As a Rotarian, I will:
Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal
and professional
life.
Deal fairly with others
and treat them and their
occupations with respect.
Use my
professional skills through
Rotary to mentor young people, help those with
special needs, and improve
people’s quality of life
in my community
and the world.
Avoid behavior that
reflects adversely on
Rotary or other
Rotarians.
The Centennial Celebration
--We will hold an event at the Avalon Inn and Resort on Saturday,
January 27, 2018 to celebrate our 100th year of service. He hopes to
have tickets distributed in September.
More will be shared as the year progresses. It promises to be an
exciting one!
Joint Care Center
We were absolutely delighted to welcome Dr. Ken
Jones to our meeting this week to talk about Knee
and Hip Pain and the Joint Care Center at Trumbull
Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Jones and his brothers, Dr. Tom and Dr.
Michael, are with Northeast Ohio Orthopedics on
North Road in Howland. He is a graduate of Ohio State University’s
College of Medicine, is a member of the Howland School Board and, along
with his wife, founded the Downs Syndrome organization in the Mahoning
Valley.
Most knee and hip pain is caused by arthritis. He explained the
difference between Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis and the
treatment options for both.
Osteoarthritis can be caused by wear and tear, genetics and trauma and
causes the gristle at the end of the bones to wear away.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an auto immune disease that wears away the
cartilage.
Treatment options can include: rest, hot or cold therapy and losing
weight. To slow down the progression of the disease the following can be
done: exercise and weight loss; physical therapy, using aids in walking,
medication such as Tylenol; NSAIDS, taking joint supplements, and using
topical anesthetics. The last line of defense is the prescribing of
narcotics and injections.
Dr. Jones also talked about how Arthritis can affect the hip and said
that the ball joint becomes egg shaped and when it reaches that stage a
hip replacement will need to be done.

He said that typically knee replacements are done 4-5 times more
frequently than hip replacements. There are several options available
when it comes to knee replacements as well. Among them: Arthroscopy,
partial knee replacement or a total knee replacement.
Knee replacement surgery has changed a great deal over the past several
years. It is less invasive, the operation taking approximately 45 minutes
to perform. Many patients go home the same day. He said the key to the
Joint Care Center’s success in joint surgeries is the pain management
process both before and after the operation. He said that their pain
management includes an injection of pain medication and a numbing agent
that lasts for about five days after the surgery, allowing the patient to
get mobile again faster and go home sooner.
Julia Ballas, who is the Joint Care Coordinator at the Joint Care Center,
attended as well and said she is the person who will work with patients
before the surgery so that by the time the surgery happens they are
better prepared and their recovery is assured. She said that the care
model of the Joint Care Center has won awards for its effectiveness and
innovation. She said that they have a 0% complication rate AND a 0%
infection rate. She also said that most patients walk more than 300 feet
within one day of their surgery and 96% of all patients go directly home
without having to go to rehab.
The Joint Care Center is a jewel in our community and Dr. Jones said that
he is taking steps to get the word out about this facility and its success.
I, for one, was so happy Dr. Jones could attend today. The information
was invaluable for anyone who experiences knee pain or has a family
member who suffers with it. Those wishing to learn more about the
subject can attend community seminars offered by the Joint Care
Center. They can be reached at 330-841-5633 for the date, time and
location of the next seminar.
