Weekly News and Announcements
Hello Rotarians and Friends! I hope all of you had a chance to enjoy the
beautiful weekend. It was perfect weather and there was so much to do,
which made it even harder to return to work this week.
President Elect Andy Bednar ran the meeting this week and he did a
fabulous job! You’d think he’d done this before, but no, it was his first
time. President Julia was out of town, but will be back at our meeting on
September 6th, full of her usual energy and cheer.
Chris Shape wrapped up his month on Fellowship with more political humor.
He also announced that John Robertson wanted him to fill in on Fellowship
next week….unless, of course, someone else wanted to volunteer. Thank
heavens someone did! So, Nigel Newman will be filling in and rescuing us all.
Rotarians with Makeups: One Makeup – Surin, Bollas, Matheson, Click,
Campolito, Vaughn, Peduzzi and Pal. Two Makeups – Collins.
Guests and Visiting Rotarians – Ted Stazak from Edward Jones, Ginny
Bond from Walls En Vogue, and Aundrea Cika from Youngstown Rotary and
the Peter Allen Inn.
Expressions of Concern – Patti Augustine said she called the Zimomra
abode to check on John and he answered the phone! He said he is doing
much better but still needs to go through therapy. It’s going to be a long
recovery, but we are so glad he appears to be on the road to improving
health.
Louisiana Disaster Relief – Andy Bednar reported that the Board of
Directors approved a $500 donation to assist victims of the Louisiana
disaster. The check was mailed today.
Pancake Day 2017 – The Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sunday, March
12, 2017, at Lincoln Elementary. Please mark your calendar and make plans
to volunteer.
Chocolate Festival – Members were reminded again
today by Chairperson Teri Surin that Chocolate
Festival is just around the corner. It will be held on
Thursday, October 13th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St.
Demetrios on Atlantic Avenue. We need sponsor-
ships and silent and Chinese auction items.

For those who are new to our Club, there are several sponsorship levels
available with various benefits to the donor in each. If you want to get
information about how you can become a sponsor, contact John Campolito.
Tickets are $15 for individuals, $25 for couples. A sign-up sheet was
passed around today so members could sign up to help. It’s tons of fun so
make plans to attend!
Quaker Steak and Lube Bike Night – Chris Shape reported that there is
one more Bike Night to be held on Friday, September 30th. Anyone who
can help is encouraged to let Chris know.
Warren Homecoming Concert – Marketing of the homecoming concert is
now underway. It will be held on Saturday, September 24th, as part of the
Warren Homecoming weekend featuring the Ohio Players. The Ohio
Players are an American funk and R&B band, most popular in the 1970s.
They are best known for their songs "Fire" and "Love Rollercoaster". Gold
certifications, records selling at least five hundred thousand copies, were
awarded to the singles "Funky Worm", "Skin Tight", "Fire", and "Love
Rollercoaster"; plus to their albums Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey. On
August 17, 2013, The Ohio Players were inducted into the inaugural class of
the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame that took place at Cleveland State
University in Cleveland, Ohio. We are delighted to sponsor this group and
encourage all Rotarians to make plans to purchase tickets when they go on
sale. The concert will be held at Packard Music Hall.
RI International Convention – As you may know, next year our club will be
celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a
booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest
35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.
The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. Expect to hear more
about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.
Mobile Meals – Jerry Donohoe announced again today that at least one
more volunteer is needed to deliver meals on Fridays one day a month. It
only takes an hour and makes a world of difference to those who are
homebound. Please see Jerry if you can help.
A Programming Note – Julia Wetstein announce a couple of weeks ago that
sometime in the next couple of months we would have some speakers from
the organization helping victims of acid attacks in Uganda. One will be the
fund administrator, Victoria, who will join us on October 12th, and the
second will be Hanifa, the woman we saw in the documentary film by
Leonard Lies. We are still waiting to hear when she can join us. Please
mark your calendars and make plans to attend.
Rotary
Code of
Conduct
As a Rotarian, I will:
Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal
and professional
life.
Deal fairly with others
and treat them and their
occupations with respect.
Use my
professional skills through
Rotary to mentor young people, help those with
special needs, and improve
people’s quality of life
in my community
and the world.
Avoid behavior that
reflects adversely on
Rotary or other
Rotarians.
Speaking of Uganda – The Rotary International President in 2018-2019
will Be Samuel Frobisher Owori, a businessman from the Rotary Club of
Kampala, Uganda. He has a truly impressive resume, as one would expect,
and Julia has high hopes that he will be supportive of our efforts to help
the victims of acid attacks in his home country. Knowing Julia, they will be
the best of friends by the time he becomes President, especially if she has
a chance to meet him at the Convention in Atlanta.
Rotary IS NOT on the Road AGAIN!
The tour scheduled for September 14th at GM in Lordstown has been
cancelled!!!!! So…..don’t go there. Report to Enzo’s as usual for our meeting
that week.
Rotary Homecoming Parade Float
Andy Bednar announced today that we are still waiting for confirmation
that the Homecoming Parade will happen. But, before I could put this
newsletter to bed, I learned we WILL be having a parade and we WILL be
entering a float. More information will be shared at this week’s meeting.
Peter Allen Inn and Event Center
Dick Thompson from the Peter Allen Inn and Event
Center in Kinsman, OH joined us today to talk about
his newly renovated facility. Dick formerly worked at
Lor Packard Electric and later helped create a company
called Therm-O-Link. In 1985, he moved to Kinsman
and later purchased the Peter Allen home.
Dr. Peter Allen was the first doctor in Kinsman and
built the house in 1821. It is in the Federal style and is often highlighted
in publications that feature early Ohio homes. The millwork in each room
is unique and it took skilled craftsmen months to replicate and repair these
features during the renovation.
After purchasing the home, Mr. Thompson had to identify a purpose for
the building and he eventually settled on it becoming an event center and

bed and breakfast. There are three rooms available as the B&B, two of
which are bedrooms and the third is a full suite. The renovations took a
three years to complete and the end results are stunning.
The facility is now available for events such as small weddings, showers,
proms, business meetings, wine tastings and much more. It can
accommodate small groups and up to as many as 150 people. The Inn
opened in May and on Friday evenings it has light food and entertainment
from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Reservations are not required.
The Rotary Club of Warren will
be planning a social event at the
Inn in the coming weeks where
all of our members can see this
beautiful facility for themselves.
The Peter Allen Inn and Event
Center is located at the corner of Route 87 and State Street in Kinsman.
From Warren, it is a 30-40 minute drive and well worth the effort. Those
wishing to learn more can log on to peteralleninn.com and view some of the
finished rooms, check on prices, and view events.
Our thanks to Dick Thompson and Aundrea Cika for joining us today and
sharing information on a true Trumbull County gem.
