Record Turnout for Scholarships
S peaking before one of his largest audiences this
year, Prez Ken presented 24 LA5 Scholarship re-cipients with awards that will change their lives, the
lives of their families and, someday, the lives of the
recipient’s children.
LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John Deasy addressed the over-
flow group. Referring to the students who were rigorously se-lected and interviewed by the LA5 Scholarships Committee co-chaired by Bob Donahue and Josh Mandell, Deasy said,
“I am inspired by the greatness among us every day.”
The crowd concurred. Scholarship Luncheon Chair Penny
von Kalinowski had no trouble convincing the audience to
contribute $80,000 towards future scholarships.

Dodger GM Ned Colletti not only hosted LA5's scholarship lunch-eon, he officially became a Rotarian! Prez Ken congratulates Ned
with District Governor Doug Baker and sponsor Charisse Older.
If you missed seeing the gang last week
Dodger legend Don Newcombe, 88 years young, was on hand to congratulate the scholarship recipients.
Program Chair Penny von Kalinowski whipped the crowd into a fundraising frenzy and raised $80,000 for LA5 Scholarships.
Ben Turner forks over a fat wad of bills to Calvin Chan who won the largest 50-50 pot in some time.
Past Presidents David Bland, Dave Tomblin and Victor Walch haven’t missed noticing scholarship recipients (not to mention LA5
Presidents!) look younger every year.
Marjorie Heller wasn't the only luminary at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey lent her support to send
another batch of deserving students to college.
Ben’s Lunch Advice On Saturday World-class Gastro-
nome Ben Tunnell flies to Fes, Morocco, then takes an hour’s

T he Rotary Global Scholarship Com-
mittee of District 5280 conducted in-terviews last Saturday with ten nomi-
nees submitted from clubs across the district including candidates selected by LA5’s World Peace Fellowship & Global Scholarship
Committee. Chair John Langfitt was notified that the district committee awarded two of the four scholarships for the 2014-2015 scholar-
ship year to LA5 nominees Michelle Iafe and Thea Trindle. Britney Tsao, the third LA5
nominee, was chosen as an alternate if one of
the four scholarships cannot be claimed.
Once the District Governor and the District
Rotary Foundation Chair confirm the commit-tee’s selections, the awardees will begin work
closely with The Rotary Foundation. Each scholarship is a $30,000 award and The Ro-
tary Foundation scrutinizes every expenditure.
Awardees must provide proof of university ad-mission to a graduate-level program or letter of invitation to conduct postgraduate-level re-
search when applying for the grant. Awardees must also meet stringent insurance require-
ments. Once their program begins, scholars must make presentations before Rotary Clubs in that region and submit detailed progress
reports to The Rotary Foundation.
John is making arrangements for Michelle and Thea to be introduced at LA5 before each head
overseas for their advanced education.
John is also making arrangements for LA5’s
most recent returned Rotary World Peace Fel-low Carolina Scheinfeld to visit the club and
address the membership on her experience in
the Professional Certificate Program.
Our annual contributions to The Rotary Foun-
dation are returned to this district to support humanitarian and education programs such as the Global Scholarships and World Peace
Fellowship. The district funds the scholarships from contributions made previously and LA5
does not pay any additional contributions.
Another Winner Last Week!
V ic Marovish contacted the El Rodeo within minutes of seeing his name
published last week as potentially winning $6,250. Congratulations,
Vic! The arbitrary and unwritten contest rules require winners to (1) personally respond to the Club President or Club Executive Director
within the stated deadline; proxies or power of attorneys will not be acknowledged; (2) at-tend an LA5 lunch within 30 days and before
the contest end to claim the prize drawing materials; and (3) at that meeting participate
in the chance drawing conducted by Prez
Ken. Whew!!
Friday, June 20, is the final meeting of the
term and the contest officially ends.
Our Nominees are chosen more often than any other club

Rotarians You Want to Know:
Jon Gibby
J on Gibby joined LA5 in 1995 and
the club wasted no time in calling him to serve as a Board Director
when Dave Tomblin was Presi-dent. He still remembers the pleasure of chairing the Junior Achievement Commit-
tee when it was a thriving standing com-mittee. Jon is our Executive Director for LA5—one of the 20 largest of the 34,707
Rotary Clubs worldwide.
Jon is an Eagle Scout, a Hollywood High
graduate and a former Shakey’s Pizza Parlor piano player. Now Jon provides stewardship over LA5’s resources and he takes it as seriously as if it were his
own business. Jon says, “Our club is filled with peo-
ple who contribute so much to the community. The most passionate and satis-
fying thing I have ever done is to run this historic or-ganization. I know that in
some small way this is my opportunity to make a dif-
ference.”
“Being a member of LA5 is like going to your favorite
buffet in Las Vegas: lots of great entrees (programs and avenues of service), wonder-
ful appetizers (fellowship opportunities) and delicious
desserts (rewards for active participation). Rotary is ul-timately about sharing and
caring and making a differ-ence in people’s lives that
you have not met or may
never meet!”
If you haven’t met Jon yet,
then please introduce your-
self at the next meeting.
Jon’s Favorites
The best city I have ever visited
was Hong Kong.
If I had only one last restaurant meal in Los Angeles I would go
to El Coyote Mexican Café.
The last book I read was Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch
Albom. I am currently reading a book Jessica Hernandez gave
me: Stephen Covey’s The 7
Habits of Highly Effective People.
If I could take only three albums
to a desert island I would bring Led Zeppelin II, the Beatles’
White Album and Chicago’s
Greatest Hits IX.
I know it is junk food, but my guilty pleasure is ice cream with hot-out-of-the-oven chocolate
chip cookies.
I graduated from high school in
1973. When I hear the Doobie Brothers “Long Train Running” on the radio, it takes me back
again.

Wrap Up to a Spectacular Year
Prez Ken Thanks LA5 Members
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
I want to thank you for your participation in LA5. We are all members of this great organization because we care about the community and the well-being
of others. Rotary works as long as one person makes the effort to help an-other. When we make this effort together anything is possible. This is what we
all accomplished this year:
● We strengthened the club by asking more and expecting more from our members by instituting an attendance policy and raising dues. Our average
participation doubled from 25% to 50%!
● We brought 200 kids from the Sheriff’s Youth Activity League, LA County Parks & Rec and LA City Rec & Parks to Disneyland. For many, it was a
first time experience.
● We deployed $60,000 in Community Service Grants, helping thousands of
people in the Los Angeles area.
● We provided Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets at the SOS Mentor Healthy Har-vest Festival and thousands of toys to kids who would have no presents
during the holidays at the Angel City Giveaway.
● We provided suits and dresses to high school juniors and seniors for prom through A Place Called Home’s Cinderella and Prince Charming Project in
South Central Los Angeles.
● We led over $230,000 in international projects in Turkey, Colombia and the
Philippines.
● The Club members and LA5 Foundation came together and raised addi-tional money to send $10,000 in aid after the hurricane in the Philippines
and $17,000 to buy a much needed anesthesia machine for a hospital in
Uganda.
● We had a fun filled Scholarship Awards Challenge Luncheon at Dodger Sta-
dium where we awarded $150,000 in college scholarships to the most de-serving students. We raised an additional $80,000 for the LA5 Foundation Scholarship Fund. We honored this year’s scholars in style with the help of
Dodger players and alums with the help of newest LA5er Dodger GM Ned
Colletti.
It was an absolute honor to serve as the President of LA5 this year. Thank you all for your participation, support and leadership in the community. Together,
we have made a difference!
Yours in Rotary Service,
