July 23 Preview: “District Governor Irene Kelly”
Human Trafficking is defined as “when one person ob-tains or holds another person in compelled service”. Human trafficking is a $150 Billion dollar per year busi-ness. Two thirds of that is from sex trafficking and the remainder is from labor trafficking. It is a hidden crime with less risk than other crimes and a person can be used repeatedly, over and over. Cornerstone’s goal is to reduce the prevalence of domestic violence, sexual violence and human trafficking. They strive to coordi-nate an effective crisis response and provide support services that move victims to survivors. Join us for this
timely program.
Meg Schnabel will introduce our speaker and highlight the Rotary initiative. Rotarians at this year’s District Conference packed hundreds of Dignity Bags for sexually exploit-
ed Youth and Adults that were delivered to Cornerstone for distribution when needed.

Guest: Margarat Low and Rotarian Meg Schnabel
On July 23, we will welcome District Governor Irene Kelly as our guest speaker. She will summarize the Rotary goals for both Rotary Interna-tional and District 5950 and share with us her vision for the year. She will challenge each of us to Be the Inspiration in 2018-2019 highlighting all the great programs and services our Rotary Club and others are doing. There are so many ways to get involved. She will encourage each of us to reflect on our own passions and work to express them through our service in Rotary.
Irene has served District 5950 as the District Training Chairperson (2011-2015). She also contributed her training skills in planning the annual District Conference and Grant Management Seminars. She was Eden Prairie AM club president in 2010-11 and served as Assistant Governor for Area 3. Professionally, Irene is a leadership and academic coach. As a consultant, she supports rising leaders moving up in their ca-reers and accomplishments.

Distinguished Guests
It’s a new Rotary year which means a new president for Bloomington Rota-ry. Terry Low was officially welcomed as the new president and even though Deb Newman wasn’t there for the official hand-off, the Club
accepted Terry officially as Club president.
Terry started by sharing about the exciting and inspiring time at the Rotary International Convention in Toronto. He was particularly impressed by Rotary International’s Presi-
dent, Barry Rassin, and his message. The theme for this Rotary year is “Be the Inspiration” and Barry spoke of his mission for Rotarians to work for a sustainable future and inspire clubs to do
more and become something greater.
Irene Kelly is the new 5950 District Governor and will be attending the Bloomington Rotary meeting on July 23. At this meeting she will share her mission and vision for this year. Terry
encouraged everyone to mark their calendar to attend.
Terry went through the Club leadership and committees—a detailed and descriptive org chart will be emailed out to everyone for their reference. Terry is looking forward to a year with engaging, informational and professional development programs. Programs are already scheduled through the fall and include an off-site meeting at Dunwoody. A visit to the recent-ly remodeled State Capitol will be scheduled at some point – hopefully when the weather is
nice so we are able to go out on the roof.
The Club will also be moving from a Sunshine report to Happy Bucks. John Swaney is head-ing that effort and the official and ceremonial unveiling of the Happy Bucks Hat was held to the oohs and ahhs of Club members. Several people immediately dropped a buck in the Hat
to share their good news for the day. Another Rotary year is off to a great start!

Stephen Bariteau gave us a very pre-liminary update on our financials for Cheers for Charity. We had good weather, many volunteers, and about 500 attendees. The number of at-tendees was up by about 100 over last year. Our income was relatively even with last year. The initial numbers (subject to change) are overall reve-nue, $52,580. Overall expenses, $23,164.
Leaving a preliminary profit of $29,416 for our Charitable Partner Grants. Stephen thanked the many volunteers, several who were not from our club. He mentioned specifically, Chuck Goldberg and Ken Ritterspach who lead the overall planning effort. Others mentioned were Dave Walock (site plan); Tim Ruzek (breweries); Deb Newman and Stephen Bariteau (sponsors); Brett Mortenson (food trucks);
and Joyce Ester (volunteers). Photos Contributed by: Becky Amble

Our personal news section will be called Happy Bucks this year. It is shared verbally as the Happy Bucks Hat is passed around the room. With the news being shared verbally each meeting, sometimes items will be missed or misheard. The RIB will feature just a few items that are shared in any given week. If you want your news shared in the RIB for sure,
please send an email to [email protected]. Here are a few items shared this week…
Fil Ruzzi’s one year old used the toilet once! Terry Low will participate in the Tough Mudder coming up. Nicklas Jen-sen was pleased his family was able to visit our club today. Diann Kirby was sailing in the Apostle Islands. Dave Drum-mond’s son adopted a new rescue dog and his oldest son just got engaged! Joyce Ester expressed thanks for the cookie donations that she takes back to the college after our meeting each week. DGE Russ Michaletz was happy for his son’s wedding held at Lutsen. And, John Swaney attended the Twins baseball game this weekend, and it was a clean
sweep!

Cheers for Charity Update
We had a special guest today in Nicklas Jensen (Youth Exchange Student from Denmark) who brought his sister, Emma, and parents, Peter and Mette, along for a visit to our club. Since he was with us last year, he has finished another year of school, turned 18, gotten his driver’s license, and visited his Rotary Club in Den-mark. “Your club is a lot more fun and a lot more friendly!” Since arriving back in MN, he has visited all of his host families and really enjoyed the party hosted by Nancy and Bob Erickson. Here, he revisited the Mall of America, the Speedway, Minneapolis downtown and the Stone Arch Bridge. Now they will travel to Chicago, Niagara Falls, and New York before they head back to Denmark. He expressed his great appreciation for the year he spent here with us and thanked everyone for all they did to make it such a memorable year. Photo is of Nicklas and his family with Bob Erickson and
Bob’s son in Denmark.

Summer Opportunities...
Thank you to Karen Nordstrom for hosting a lovely evening at her home on a hot and steamy night for the women of our club. It was a time to share about things happening in our personal lives and get to know one another better. We even had a “Done-in-an-Evening” service project to keep our hands busy
while chatting. (We finished up all the Pretzel Necklaces for Cheers for Charity.)

The Bloomington Rotary Foundation (BRF) was started on December 1, 1989. The purpose of the Foundation was for members to be able to make tax deductible donations to benefit our Rotary club programs and to build up an endow-ment to support our Charitable Partners. This past year, the BRF gave out several STRIVE scholarships, and one spe-cial scholarship through the Education Foundation of Bloomington. The BRF was able to grant $35,000 to our Charita-
ble Partners as you have seen over the past few months at our meetings and highlighted in the RIB each week.
Annually, the club elects two members to the Foundation Board of Direc-tors. The B of D consists of seven members. Six members are elect-ed...two each year to serve a three year term. The seventh member is the Past President. At our meeting on Monday, the club elected Doo-dee Backstrom and Larry Lee to the class of 2021. Also serving this coming year are Dick Young, John Swaney, Kurt Hagen, and Mary
Kurth.
