ROTARY IMAGE ROTARY FAMILY SERVICE CENTRE

When Rotary Family Service Centre was set-up in 1997, it created history for Rotary Movement in Singapore. It rose as the fi rst long-term project initiated by the 16 Rotary Clubs in partnership with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports. While each club continued their individual projects, they also came together to raise funds and lend voluntary service to Rotary Family Service Centre.

Rotarians belonging to various professions played their part actively right from the start when the void deck space had to be converted to house the centre. From architecture to programme planning, fund-raising to hiring appropriate staff, Rotarians came together. Till today when Singapore has 23 Rotary Clubs, members from all Rotary Clubs are actively involved to serve on the Management Council to oversee the Rotary Family Service Centre. Every week, we also see Interactors and Rotaractors doing voluntary work to help with Senior Citizen’s activities and to engage primary school children in enriching activities.

Rotary Family Service Centre is buzzing with about 250 Senior Citizens registered for Exercise, Line-dancing, Conversational English Lessons, Art n Craft, Yoga, Electro-magnetic Therapy, Health Nutrition and Safety Talks, Bingo, Karaoke and various outings. These activities not only keep seniors away from feeling lonely and bored but also pick up tips for their safety and health!

Periodically, activities are organized to enhance interaction and bonding between our Senior Citizens and Children. Be it a trip to the Jurong Bird Park or a picnic at the Marina Barrage, the two generations have been able to adjust to each other’s pace to have a good time.

About 60 primary school children love to drop-in after school to play, meet friends from

different schools and fi nish their homework. Parents are supportive of our activities as we relieve them from planning something interesting every day. Moreover, with our large pool of volunteers tuition at highly subsidized rates is rare to come by.

While children and senior citizens are part of the Preventive and Developmental Programmes (PDP) of Rotary FSC, Emotional & Financial Counselling is our Core Work. In fact the two PDPs are to support our Core work i.e. children and senior citizens from families of our counselling clients are encouraged to join our PDPs. Annually, more than 350 families benefi t from Counselling on Parenting, Marital Issues, Financial Issues, Relationships, Family Violence, Mental Health issues etc.

Rotary FSC distinguishes itself from other similar centres by offering assistance schemes purely due to Rotary Club’s support. Family Aid Vouchers, Food Rations, Emergency Relief, Meals from the Heart, Autistic Children’s Fund are some such scheme initiated by Rotary Clubs that are greatly appreciated by families in need!!

While the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd was initiated in 1993 by PDG Dr Robert Loh and PDG Gerald Minjoot, the following PDGs were also on the Board of Directors. PDG Tan Geok Tian, PDG Fong Hoe Beng, PDG Ben Chng, PDG Dr Wu Dar Ching, PDG Dr Ivor Thevathasan. PDG Kenneth Chew is currently the Chairman.

As funding for Rotary Family Service Centre from the Government was partial during the period 1997-2006, the BOD had a mandate to raise the balance. Rotary Clubs were instrumental and it is through their support that Rotary FSC is still serving residents of Clementi & West Coast area. Just to clarify any doubt, this service boundary was set by the Ministry of Community Development Youth & Sports. Similarly, the 35 other Family Service Centres all over Singapore have a predetermined service boundary.

With a shift to full funding thanks to MCYS and NCSS Totalisator Board Fund since July 2006, Rotary Clubs in Singapore have heaved a sigh of relief and truly appreciate the move. Despite this significant move, Rotary Clubs have continued to raise funds for additional projects started by Rotary FSC to help needy families.

Avid golfers will recollect that IPP Charity Golf has been the fund-raising highlight over many years. Initiated by Presidents of Rotary Year 2004-05, after their term as President it became an annual affair where all clubs gathered under the capable leadership of PP Dr K K Tan. PP Jack Chuang, PP Goh Seow Chee, PP Matthew Yong, PP Lee Lye Wah were the other pillars for the event’s success. IPP Charity Golf raised $91,817 in 2006, $108,080 in 2007 and $150,128 in 2008. Rotary Flag Day was organized in 2006, 2008 & 2010. These were major mobilization exercises to raise funds from the general public. Rotarians & their families, Rotaractors & Interactors responded to the call and it also led to good PR exercise for Rotary in Singapore.

“Today Rotary Family Service Centre is also being used by some clubs for their regular meetings, Interact & Rotaract BOD meetings, District Committee Meetings. I’d say we can also call it

our Rotary House - humble yet practical!”

-Ms Nidhi Swarup Executive Director, Rotary Family Service Centre.

ROTARY IMAGE MEALS FROM THE HEART

To commemorate Rotary’s 100th Anniversary, the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (S) Ltd initiated a project for the benefi t of needy Senior Citizens. 100 Senior Citizens residing in Boon Lay and Yuhua Constituency benefi tted from this service as partnership was forthcoming in Southwest Community Devel-opment Council (SWCDC). Rotary appreciates the partnership of South West CDC, Loving Heart Multi-service Centre and the select hawkers in Boon Lay who provided the cooked food to the seniors. More than 84,000 Free Meals have been served thus far.

The pilot project was launched in the Constituency of Boon Lay by PM Lee Hsien Loong on the 29 August 2004. The project will be extended to Central Community Development Council and another constituency in Southwest CDC. Discussions are currently ongoing.

The fi rst 5 years of operation is rather low key without much public relations after the initial big bang. This is the Rotary way for Rotary funded project without external co-operative arrangement. Quietly, Rotary has partnered Government and third party food providers to provide the needy seniors a warm meal for 5 years.

Plan for the Next Five YearsAll Fund-raising thus far has been carried out by Rotarians and their contacts. This year, for the First Time a Major Fund-raising event is being organized for Meals from the Heart Project. The objective is to reach wide and deep so that more needy seniors could be served. In addition, with the direct involvement of corporate sponsorship, the project will be put on another high gear on public relations and publicity.

Rotary intends to expand the Meals from the Heart Project by partnering with Corporate Sponsors and Foundations. External Funding is vital to achieve Rotary’s objective of serving another 100 needy Senior Citizens in Southwest CDC and to expand the project to Central CDC. We are in discussions with SWCDC regarding Bukit Batok area and with Central CDC regarding Jalan Besar area.

It is a meaningful project for the Singapore Rotarians. All 23 clubs take turn to raise fund year on year to ensure that the needy seniors will not be left out. It is another Rotary Image and PR promotion in Singapore for community service in partnership with government and the private sectors.

For ambulant clients in the Boon Lay area, meal coupons are issued to residents for them to exchange for a meal per coupon at the Boon Lay Hawker Centre.

For less ambulant clients in the Boon Lay area and clients in the South West Community Development Council, Loving Hearts Multi Service Centre delivers meals to the clients.

The project is administered by the South West CDC, Rotary Family Service Centre at Clementi in conjunction with Boon Lay Hawkers Association, Boon Lay Neighbourhood Link and Loving Heart Multi-Service Centre (Jurong East).

The cost of providing a simple meal is three dollars. One Dollar is contributed by Rotary clubs from funds raised from Corporate Sponsors, Rotarians and well-wishes. The Second Dollar is matched by South West Community Development Council. For the meal coupons arrangement, the Third Dollar is contributed by the participating food stall owners at Boon Lay Hawker Centre when the owner discounts the cost of the meal by one dollar, accepting only two dollars in payment for the meal. For the meal delivery arrangement, the third dollar is contributed by the meal vendor, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society.

Meals from the Heart Concept

This is a very unique concept of helping for tripartite arrangement with each party contributing to the cause without the overhead charge. Every dollar of donation and contribution will be given to the needy seniors. All the parties will contribute their time and effort without charge, plus S$1 per meal by each party.

ROTARY IMAGE ROTARY DIALYSIS CENTRE, KULAI

Rotary Club of Kulai started its Dialysis Centre in 1996 at a rented building in Kulai with 4 dialysis machines serving 8 patients. In 1998 Datuk Yap Seng Hock , a philanthropist from Johor Bahru donated a piece of land and we raised fund from the Kulai community to build our own Dialysis Centre in Senai. The building is called Wisma Rotary. Now we have 37 machines and 105 patients. The staff consists of Dr Morris Wo, a nephrologists doctor, an admin manager, a sister, 6 staff nurses, 7 dialysis assistants, a cleaner and a general worker cum van driver. The charges for each patient is RM 110.00 but the patient only pays RM 60.00 as the Malaysian Governor subsidizes RM 50.00 each. The patients have to go for 3 sessions per week. Rotary Club of Kulai subsidizes heavily for these patients from the fund raised from the Kulai Community which has been very supportive of the Dialysis Centre all these years.

In the Rotary Year 2000-2001, an Observatory was built beside Wisma Rotary. It has a 16 inch telescope where students and members of the public could study space science. This was the brainchild of PP Ooi Kao Yang, our honorary member. He has a master degree on this subject. PP Ooi comes regularly to lecture whenever RC Kulai organizes observatory session.

In Rotary Year 2006-2007, the RI District 3310 Physical Secretariat was set up in Wisma Rotary. It was the brainchild of PDG Dr Wu Dar Ching who was the District Governor at that time. The first office manager was Mr Lui Hai Wah who resigned after a year. Since Rotary Year 2007-2008 PP Joseph Chua was appointed the office manager and he is still serving into the 3rd year. The Physical Secretariat keeps the photos of all the Past District Governors, documents, files, Rotary materials and banners of all the Rotary Clubs of District 3310.

L-R: WISMA ROTARY • CLUB BANNERS • TRAINING SESSIONS ROTARY OBSERVATORY. OPPOSITE: WITH DIALYSIS PATIENTS

Wisma Rotary also doubles up as meeting places for Rotarians. The Conference Room is fully equipped with all the modern facilities. Rotary Club of Kulai holds its weekly meeting in the Conference Room on Wednesday at 7.00 pm.at the Wisma Rotary. The District 3310 has also made use of this Conference Room for regional meetings and seminars.

Wisma Rotary is a center to provide dialysis service to the needy, maintain as Physical Secretariat for D3310 and also the meeting venue for RC Kulai and D3310 regional meetings. It truly projects the Rotary Image for Rotarians and non-Rotarians.

ROTARY IMAGE SINDEX

Sindex is a major Vocational Service project jointly organised by all the 11 Rotary Clubs in Sabah in collaboration with Unit Sains and Teknologi under the Chief Minister’s Department , other Government Departments, Higher Learning Institute and, Professional bodies. The main objectives of Sindex are to inculcate and nurture creativity and innovative thinking among our new generation especially in the field of science and technology, and to better prepare our new generation based on a past RI Theme “Build the Future by Preparing the New Generation” to face the challenges of our national goal “VISION 2020” in this competitive world arising from globalization.

This joint Rotary project was initiated in 1998 by PP Tsen Kui Loi, of Rotary Club of Likas Bay who is known as the Father of SINDEX. SINDEX was subsequently organised biennially and is led on a rotation basis amongst Rotary Clubs in Kota Kinabalu.

Sindex 2010 under the theme “ Nurturing Young Creative Minds” is the 6th biennial joint project and its organizers are Unit Sains Teknologi of the Chief Minister’s Depatment Sabah, Kementerian Sains dan Teknologi dan Inovasi, Shell Malaysia, Jabatan Pelajaran Negri Sabah, University Malaysia Sabah, Institute of Engineers Malaysia, Sabah Branch, Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) Sabah Chapter, Sirim Berhad Cawangan Sabah/W.P. Labuan, Federation of Sabah Manufacturers, Daily Express, Jabatan Muzium Sabah, Jabatan Penyiaran Malaysia Sabah, The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MYIPO) and all the 11 Rotary Clubs in Sabah.

All the 11 Rotary Clubs in Sabah are the backbone of this project and are continuing to give their support and contribution to this meaningful project that was started 12 years ago and have benefitted more than 30,000 students and about 3,000 teachers over the years. The SINDEX programme focused on nurturing creative and innovative skills among the new generation has created a great impact to our communities and also enhanced the good image of Rotary due to its continuous publicity through press media, Radio Television Media and presentation of programme to schools. Indeed the enthusiasm, commitment and invaluable contribution by Rotarians from all Rotary Clubs towards this SINDEX is laudable and commendable.

Total budget for the SINDEX 2010 is more than RM250,000. We hope that with expectation of additional funding from the Sabah State government, shortlisted winners of the State level invention competitions and Exhibition will be sent to participate in the Asean Innovation and Exhibition and national level Invention Competition to be held in Labuan and Kuala Lumpur sometime in September and November, 2010.SINDEX is the largest vocational project by the Rotarians in Sabah and will be scaled to greater height soon with the continuing strong support from Rotarians, financial support from government and commercial sector like Shell Malaysia.

Sindex 2010, listed in the Calendar of Events for Malaysia Innovative 2010 to supplement and complement the government’s programme on creativity and innovation, comprises of 6 main activities:

1) Seminars and Training on Creativity and Sindex 2010 for Rotarians in Sabah, Members of the Organising Committee and volunteers as Motivators by March, 20102) Seminars and Training on Creativity and Sindex 2010 for teachers from 207 secondary schools throughout Sabah to be conducted in April and mid May 2010 by trained Rotarians as Motivators and Volunteers. Our target is to provide this special training to 800 or more secondary school teachers. We expect the Trained Motivated Teachers attached to their respective schools shall have opportunities to motivate, guide and inspire their students to be more creative and innovative in whatever fields the students may pursue in the future.3) Motivational talks to secondary students in secondary schools throughout Sabah. The trained teachers, Rotarians & Volunteers will be sent out to various schools throughout Sabah to conduct motivation talks to more than 10,000 students by April and Mid May, 2010.4) Encourage students to participate in the invention competition and exhibition which is a state-wide competition designed to enable students to use their creativity and imagination along with the tools of science to create inventions, while stimulating their problem- solving abilities. 5) Divisional Competition and Exhibition will be held in Tawau and Sandakan on 31July and 14-15 August, 2010 respectively. Shortlisted entries from the Sandakan and Tawau divisional level will participate in the State level competition and exhibition to be held in Kota Kinabalu on 18 and 19 September, 2010. Attractive Prizes worth RM50,000 in the form of Cash, Trophies and Certificate are to be won by the winners.6) The grand “finale” of the Sabah Invention Competition and Exhibition will be held on 18th and 19th of September, 2010 during which the highlight will be the prize presentation and the Young Inventor Award by the YAB, Chief Minister of Sabah

ROTARY IMAGE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF ROTARY MOVEMENT IN SINGAPORE

EXCERPTS FROM PRIP BICHAI RATTAKUL

ON 80TH YEAR OF ROTARY IN SINGAPORETonight, we acknowledge that brightness with a look at the history of Rotary in Singapore. Most important, we will look at what has been accomplished, the lives that have been saved, the hearts that have been touched and the future that shines brightly for Rotary for tomorrow and beyond

MEALS FROM THE HEARTSI am extremely happy to see that all the Rotary Clubs in this Republic join together and work hard in hand making this event a showcase of Rotary’s involvement in Community Service. To mention just one.... The project which was initiated in 2004 has been providing free meals for the needy senior citizens in an area in Singapore. Further funds will be sought to sustain this project “Meals from the Heart” for the next 5 years

GRASSROOTS OF ROTARIANS!My fellow Rotarians, whenever we talk about Rotary, we must always remember that Rotary accepts every person for who he or she is. Rotary does not demand perfection, but Rotary does demand action and expect a person to live up to his or her best. Rotary inspires us to dream of the world the way it ought to be... a world of brother of service, of idealism, of peace or harmony.... A world of LOVE!

I have often been asked how does Rotary inspire us, and how does one strengthen one’s club. As Rotarians, we know that it is the club and its members... the grassroots of Rotarians... not the club president, not the district governor, not the director of RI and certainly not the RI President... who do the works of Rotary. It is you... the grassroots Rotarians, who are the core, the heart and soul of Rotary. So it is you who must nurture and strengthen your club through your action. It is the “bottom up” approach, rather than the “top –down” command.

THE NORTH STARMy fellow Rotarians when you return to your clubs after this evening please remind your fellow members and yourself that the OBJECT of Rotary provides each club with a chart for a voyage of significant service. The precise course plotted by each Rotarian depends on his or her individual interests and abilities. But I believe that we can all make the passage successfully if we keep constantly before us that “North Star” which will be the focus of this year to show through all our actions in Building Communities and Bridging Continents

The words of wisdom from PRIP Bichai Rattakul, Guest of Honour at the Celebrating 80 years of Rotary in Singapore on 6th June 2010 at Conrad Hotel Singapore

The real magic of Rotary lies in direct

participation in service.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME

Rotary Scholar Jolene Fisher, Illinois USA (studied in National University of Singapore) :

In the past eight months I have learned how Singapore, a tiny island with almost no natural resources, came to be the technological, economical and educational epicenter of South east Asia. I have seen first hand how this multicultural society uses its diversity to its advantage.

I was hosted by a very active Rotary Club led by a young, female President, Ms. June Jonet, who has made my experience here even more rewarding. I had the chance to join my club, Marina City, on their Water for Life Project in Sarsarsdam, Cambodia in December. With the “Make Dreams Real” 08-09 motto in mind, we broke ground on a water-well project that will supply clean water to a village of about 1,000 people who have no access to electricity, sanitation facilities, or clean water. Along with the Rotaract Club of NUS and the Interact Club of Dunman Secondary School, we delivered desperately needed supplies to the village health center, gave health talks at a government run hospital in Siem Reap, and spent time doing educational and fun proj-ects at a village school and an orphanage.

The impressions left upon me by the people of Cambodia, the good done by Rotary, and the power each of us holds to impact this world have been life-altering.
