Conference WelcomeDG Erwin Biemel & Carol

A Rotary Conference represents an opportunity for the family of Rotary to come together and celebrate the achievements of the year , meet other Rotarians and Partners and learn what other Clubs and individuals are doing within the district.

Conferences represent the only opportunity that Rotarians not in a board possition have to meet others from the Family of Rotary in one place at one time.

I welcome you all to the conference and wish everone an enjoyable and informative time.

The Mandurah Conference has been in the planning stage for over two years and all this planning comes together on March the 21-23 of 2014. All credit must go to the Conference Chairman Rob Webster and his team for making this event possible.

The Rotary theme for this year is “ Engage Rotary-Change Lives” and as RI President Ron Burton states a “ Its a kind of action theme” .

In designing the program we have focused on Engaging Rotary and providing to all those in attendance an insight into how we do indeed Change Lives.

The first people known to have inhabited the Mandurah area were the Binjareb tribe of the Bibbulmun Nation. The locality then was known as Mandjoogoordap, which translates as ‘meeting place of the heart’. After European settlement the name was adapted to Mandurah.

Can there be any place better to hold a Conference but at a “meeting place of the heart’ ?

Dear Rotarians and Guests,

Jetta and I send our warmest greeting to each of you attending this 2013-14 districtconference. We have enjoyed many district conferences during our time as Rotarians and we wish we could be with you for this conference, but that is just not possible.

We are confident that you will enjoy a full program of Rotary information, fun and fellowship and hope you will find it inspirational and rewarding.

As you listen to the speakers, including my personal representative and participate in the various events and activities planned for the conference, I ask you to think about the rewards and opportunities of being a Rotarian and being a part of the Family of Rotary.

Sharing your enthusiasm for Rotary with others is the real key to growing and strengthening Rotary membership.

Rotary has been a well-kept secret for too long. It’s time for us to share the wonderful opportunities of Rotary with others. Tell a friend about your experience at this conference and about all that your club and district do throughout the year. Invite a friend to join you at a meeting or in a special event. What a wonderful way to Engage Rotary, Change Lives!

The more engaged we become, the greater the rewards we enjoy. What I have learnedduring my Rotary journey is that as I engage Rotary, the life that has changed the mosthas been mine. Jetta and I ask you to join us this year in sharing the good news of Rotary and actively engaging Rotary in every way possible.

Best wishes for a successful district conference.

Akram Azimi Young Australian of the Year, 2013

Akram Azimi fled Afghanistan in 1999 with his mother and brother at the height of a bloody civil war, arriving in Australia a child refugee.

Akram Azimi is, in his own words, “the luckiest primate on the planet” Indeed, he compares himself to Charlie from the Willy Wonka movie; except that unlike Charlie, Akram won all five Golden Tickets.

His first Golden Ticket was being born to his brilliant, beautiful and university educated mother. His second was his ‘lucky dip’ win of a visa to Australia; His third was his inspiring teachers at Warwick Senior High School . His fourth was receiving a scholarship to St George’s College, University of Western Australia; from where he graduated with a triple major in law, science and arts. And his fifth was being chosen as The Young Australian of the Year for 2013, despite other, far more worthy, nominees (in Akram’s eyes).

It was his philanthropic work with the disadvantaged in the community that caused him to bechosen as an inspirational young Australian to receive the annual honour. For three years,Akram mentored young indigenous Australians in the remote community of Looma in theKimberley region, and primary school students in a small farming community in the WA wheatbelt.

In 2011, he co-founded a student-run initiative to raise awareness about indigenous issues inuniversities, and has also worked with the True Blue Dreaming, a youth mentoring network. MrAzimi is also mentoring a Special Olympics athlete to raise public awareness about disabilityissues.

Akram acknowledges the traditional custodians of “this living land’’ and says, “I pay my respects to our aborigines out of the self-evident truth that the dreaming has not ended. It lives on. We are all a part of it.’’

Akram is deeply aware that he never chose any of this good fortune; and, as such, he is no more deserving of it than anyone else. However, he has chosen what to do with these blessings: - tobe grateful and give back in whatever small way he can.

Yared WoldeHope for Children Schools Ethiopia

Yared Wolde is a young Ethiopian of considerable promise who is committed to the Friends Cafe Project for Ethiopia. The background to the project and Yared is compelling.

Ethiopia has 4.6 million orphaned children and virtually no government services to look after them. Some 800,000 of these have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Most, if not all of these are illiterate, and without help and are destined to end up as slaves, prostitutes or beggars. Yared Wolde was one of these children. At the age of five he was found by a Maltese Nun reading a picture book under a street light in Addis Ababa.

He had lost his whole family and was living in a large pipe on the roadside. The Nun took Yared to her orphanage, educated him and he became her ‘right hand man’.

Today Yared is achieving his dream of starting a school for the poorest and brightest orphanson the edge of Addis Ababa. He was able to set up this school with aid from a Perth-based NGO called “Hope for Children”. The school now provides classes, educational materials and daily meals for 150 children. Yared’s plans are to make the school one of the best in his country, and to change the popular perception that orphans have no status or value in Ethiopia’s society. The school’s motto is “Fighting Poverty through education”.

Director of the Perth-based NGO, Hope for Children Organisation, Jacqui Gilmour, says “Yared is the local driving force, has boundless energy and an enormous heart. He is providing potentially life changing opportunities for Ethiopian children”.

However, the challenge of finding a job for 14-25 year old school-leavers remains. Without jobs, the dangers of slavery, prostitution and begging re-emerge. The Friends Cafe Project aims to provide vocations for these school leavers as accredited hospitality workers for the booming tourist and business industries in Ethiopia.

The Project is a Global Grant awaiting approval of RI and fully funded with the support of Clubs in District 9465 , and Clubs and Districts in Australia and Internationally 17

Art Exhibition Permanent Impressions 50 Eminent Western Australian Women

Permanent Impressions is a body of high quality works (portraits) painted by artist Jana Vodesil-Baruffi, celebrating the achievements of Western Australian women, who have made a significant contribution to the Western Australian community and the Australian nation at large.

It is intended the portraits will become a collectible and notable item that in time adds to the history of WA.

The commencement of this project coincided with the 100 year celebrations (1911 to 2011) of the international women’s movement. 50 portraits were painted over an 18 month period and were completed in April 2013.

Women invited to participate in this project are inductees from the WA Women’s Hall of Fame established as part of the 100 year celebrations of International Women’s Day.

Included also are a number of women promoted by the Hall of Fame inductees who in their opinion are uncelebrated heroes of the WA community. The story of each of these women accompanies their portrait and offers an inspirational account of achievements by women who in their ordinary lives achieve extra ordinary things.

Professor Lyn Beazley, the chief scientist of Western Australia, has described Permanent Impressions as a “… series of portraits representing women who have in their lives achieved beyond the ordinary and become role models for all ages ………..the project recognizes that passion, perseverance and often struggle can result in great achievement. “

The exhibition is located in the Art Gallery on the ground floor off the East Foyer and is free for all attendees at the Conference.

Rotarians and Guests are invited to donate to the Leukaemia Foundation in support of research into this illness
