It’s May and the Rotary year is speeding along to completion and the start of a fresh new year.

April was truely a busy and historic month. It began with the Rotary Day of Service on April 6th at South Park Recreation Center on 51st Street in Los Angeles. 280 Rotari-ans participated in the renovation of the Day Care & Teen Center; Weight Room; Gym; the Baseball field (new infield and bleachers) and the Playground. held a welcoming party on Sunday April 14th. They are very busy with their scheduled visits and will be at the District Confer-ence in Santa Barbara.

RYLA finished the April events at the Alpine Conference Center April 26th -28th. It was another “standing room only” that had a waiting list. You should have seen the growth of the attendees from the time they arrived to the time they boarded the buses to travel home. It was remarkable.

We will see you at the District Conference, VIVA ROTARY!

I thought you would enjoy seeing this picture taken by the Homeboy photographer when we held our Joint Club meeting at Homegirl Café on March 5, 2013 to celebrate our Homeboy Industries $59,000 Matching Grant. Congratulations to all of you!

Goodyear Blimp and Polio Plus

The iconic Goodyear airship Spirit of America, often referred to as "the blimp," has carried messages regarding Rotary Interna-tional's efforts to End Polio Now at the anniversary of Rotary each February for the past four years. During these past four years, District 5280 has celebrated Rotary's anniversary by having PDG Rick Mendoza photograph that year's current District 5280 Governor and other District leaders at the airship operations in Carson, Ca. This year, Governor Lew Bertrand, Lt. Governor Dean Reuter, PDG Rick Mendoza, PDG First Lady Helen Mendoza, and District Polio Chair Shirley Giltzow joined together to once again celebrate the anniversary of Ro-tary at the Goodyear airship operations.

The Goodyear corporation management is extremely suppor-tive of Rotary, and our efforts to End Polio Now. The mes-sage, Goodyear Proudly Supports Rotary International End Polio Now, is displayed in lights on the side of the air-ship that can be seen both in the day and evening. It was not only displayed on the anniversary of Rotary, but is displayed throughout the year each time the airship goes up in the air. There are other messages displayed as well on a rotational basis, but Rotary's message is the only permanent one that has been and will continue to be displayed with no plans to remove it. When the millions of people in the Los Angeles basin look up when they see the "the blimp" pass overhead, they will most likely see the message in support of End Polio Now.

I wanted to thank both Rotaract of LA Harbor College and the LA Harbor Culinary school for participating with the Wilmington Rotary Club at the Healthy Kids Event for the Wil-mington YMCA. This event took place Saturday the 13th from 10am – 2pm at the Wilming-ton YMCA facility. Both Culinary and Rotaract made yogurt parfaits for us to distribute to the children so they are aware that healthy food taste good too!!

Rotary Day of Service

On Saturday, April 6, Rotarians and their guests from 30 Clubs, Interactors from 16 high schools and Rotaractors from 5 Rota-ract clubs within District 5280 joined hands and completed the rejuvenation of South Park Recreation Center in South Los An-geles. With great pleasure, Governor Lew Bertrand of District 5280 presented a $7,000 check for South Park summer camper-ship scholarships. All activities demonstrated Rotary’s commitment to our communities, making Greater Los Angeles a better place to live and work.

With help from over 150 Rotarians and 100 Interactors and Rotaractors, the park’s transformation rapidly took shape. As the

volunteers cleaned, scraped and painted, raked, repaired, re-built and replaced, each area took on an immeasurably brighter and

more cheerful appearance and the park’s community center became a safer and more welcoming environment. Thanks to the

volunteers’ energy and concentration, we completed every task set to us, and then some. Special thanks are due to all the crew

chiefs who took on extra duties.

Special thanks as well to Mark Mariscal, the Pacific Region Superintendent of Operations for the LA City Department of Rec-

reation and Parks, and Parks’ staff. The project would not have been nearly as successful without their assistance.

On behalf of the District Governors of Korean Rotary District 3700, District 5280, Senior AG for Community Service of Dis-

trict 5280, DJ Sun and the families who use the park, we thank everyone who participated in the rejuvenation of the South Park

Recreation Center.

Here is what the volunteers accomplished:

Baseball infield: move a mountain of red clay dirt to re-cover the infield. Thanks to the sun worshipers who

toiled in the sun most of the day to complete the task.

Baseball bleachers: the Power Tools crew replaced about thirty rotted plank seats and steps while the painting

crew re-painted the whole bleacher structure and old & new planks after scraping and sanding away many layers of old

and peeling paint. At the end of the day, the bleachers looked like new.

Weight Room: the repair crew washed away years of dirt, installed a new rubber mat floor and sanitized the equip-

ment. Since much of the weight room equipment was too big to fit through the door, they used their ingenuity to shift

the machines from one side of the room to other. The transformation of this space was astonishing.

Teen Room: the crew washed and cleaned the wall, tables, chairs, computer equipment and removed dirt that had

accumulated outside the windows for many years. Members of Power Tools crew replaced termite damaged window

frames and 11 plexi-glass windows. When they finished, the sun shone brightly through the newly installed clean win-

dows!

Exterior of the Community Center: contending with a freshening breeze that made their work much harder, the

painting crew succeeded by painting the exterior by spraying and rolling.

Pool Reception Area: The area got a complete facelift with the cleaning and painting over 100 cubicles.

Pre-School Room: after the cleaning crew finished, the room was so clean you could eat off the floor; the cubicles

gleamed with bright new colors. The refrigerator was almost like new after being thoroughly cleaned by the volunteers.

Auditorium/Multi-Purpose Room, storage room #1, #2 and #3: Crews deep cleaned the storage areas and organ-

ized the stacks and piles of supplies and equipment that filled in the room. This was the most labor-intensive project of

all, and at one point, over 35 people were working in the room. The summer campers are never going to run out of art &

craft supplies!

Library: Redondo Beach members and Rotaractors from UCLA worked exclusively on this assignment. They

inspected the old books for keeping or discarding and re-stocked the bookshelves with new books. It was voted the most

beautiful display area in the center!

Patio: the crew raked up 5 years of dead leaves (12 giant bags of leaves went to the trash) and installed 60 cement

pavers in the dirt area. Their hard work made the patio an inviting space.

Camper cubbies: 72 cubbies in the auditorium were cleaned, sanded and beautifully varnished. Great job!

Rotary Day of Service

Kitchen: a deep clean was done, and all new kitchen appliances (as well as shelving paper) were installed. The kitchen is so

clean that it blinds my eyes!

Playground areas: all of the playground equipment was cleaned and sanitized; sandy areas were cleared of debris, securing

the safety for little ones. Special recognition to volunteers at the registration, food, coffee & water stations and supply depot and to security person-

nel, photographers and those on trash duty. They were great! In addition to the “official” event photographers, we recognize that many participants took photos. If you are willing to share, please email the photos to Melody St. John at [email protected] by April 17 and photos will be uploaded to the album for your viewing pleasure. We are working on a photo journal that will be showed at the District Conference on the first weekend of May. Let me know if you would like to show the photo journal at your club meeting; we will try to make it available to you. GSE Team Arrives from Japan

The last Group Study Exchange team from D2620 in Japan has arrived and started their exciting four week long jour-

ney. A former Japan Airlines international flight attendant turned nursing home owner, Mrs. Satomi Omata, is the Otsuki Rotary

Club president and the GSE team leader. The four team members are Mr. Hiroaki Ogino, a producer of Yamanashi Broadcasting

System, Ms. Namiko Ishikawa, a police officer at Shizuoka Prefectural Police Department, Ms. Minami Wada a nurse at an ortho-

pedic clinic, and Mr. Noriaki Oshimura, a dentist.

D2620 encompasses Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures right at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Yamanashi is famous for the best wine and

table grapes in Japan and boasts beautiful scenery, including Japan Alps, while Shizuoka is the home of piano giants, Yamaha and

Kawai, and famous for one of the best green tea, Mandarin oranges, and great hot springs.

D2620's GSE team is very excited to be in D5280, and looks forward to their vocational visits and cultural exchanges as well as

getting to know as many Rotarians as possible in our district. They will make more than a dozen club presentations, so

please check the coordinators for each of the coming four weeks to find out which club presentation may be nearest to you: John

Miron for 4/13-4/21, Monika White for 4/21-4/28, Chuck Hanchett for 4/29-5/5, and Makiko Nakasone for 5/5-5/13.

Don't miss meeting with our last GSE team!
