Letter from RI President Barry Rassin to the Districts of Brazil By Ruaim Rabbie on WE LOVE ROTARY Facebook Page

As you know, the 2018-19 motto is Be an Inspiration!

I highlighted our collective progress in the fight against polio as one of the reasons why I chose this motto. In fact, 2018 marks the 30-year anniversary of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) - an historic global partnership that was catalyzed by the extraordinary energy, enthusiasm, and generosity of Rotarians. In 1989, a year after the launch of GPEI, Brazil recorded its last case of the wild poliovirus. The country has remained free of this disease since then, and all North and South America were certified as polio-free only five years later in 1994.

However, as we well know, no child is safe until the whole world has been certified as polio-free. Maintaining high levels of routine immunization is one of four key strategies for the eradication of child paralysis. We must continue to immunize all children against polio to protect them against the threat of outbreaks and to ensure that there are no areas with populations vulnerable to polio. Unfortunately, such areas have been identified in Brazil.

You are congratulated on recognizing the risk and for working with the national immunization program in identifying low coverage areas and the adoption of targeted immunization campaigns, which will happen in August. Be the inspiration in your districts, contribute to each club adopting a vaccination post, and on August 18 mobilize and join the Rotary family in order to succeed and have a major impact on the upcoming immunization campaigns. In this way, you will give a powerful and concrete example that what the eyes do not see should not be what the heart does not feel when it comes to protecting children against polio.

    Barry Rassin, President Rotary International

What is the story behind the Rotary wheel pin? From Rotary Club of Huntersville

The first lapel pin in the history of the Rotary was

designed and made by New York Rotary Club member

and jeweler John Frick on October 14, 1909 and worn

by the club’s first president Bradford Bullock. The

forerunner of the traditional Rotary pin worn today, it

features the Rotary wheel has it appeared in its earliest

representation with eight spokes, no cogs, and no

    keyway.

In 1910, the Rotary Club of Philadelphia added cogs to create a working wheel, symbolizing

members working together, literally interlocked with one another to achieve the

organization's objectives. They used 19 cogs in honor of their club, the 19th in Rotary. They

created hundreds of metal pins with this design and successfully pitched it as the new

official international wheel in 1912. It didn’t hurt that the president of the Philadelphia club

[who had designed that club's emblem] became president of the International Association

of Rotary Clubs at the 1912 Duluth convention. Later they added the all-important cog to

    allow the pin to work.

    Why wear a Rotary pin?

Reasons for wearing a pin varied: for publicity of Rotary, for

pride, for acceptance and recognition, for the start of easy

conversation with other Rotarians wherever you go. Wearing a

Rotary Fellowship pin shows a Rotarian’s vocation, hobby or

    recreational interest.

Past RI President Bob Barth (1993-94, from the Rotary Club of

Aarau, Switzerland) felt that a Rotary pin says this about the

wearer: “You can rely on me, I am dependable, I am reliable, I

give more than I take, and I am available. Wear your pin proudly … but don’t overdo it!

  • Reef Revisited By Quincy Cahilig • This story originally appeared in Philippine Rotary magazine

In the calm blue waters of Lamon Bay lies a source of pride for local fishermen and a submerged salute to Rotary: an artificial reef in the shape of a Rotary wheel. The wheel has helped restore the local fishing industry, which was devastated by large-scale commercial fishing vessels that used dynamite, cyanide, and fine mesh nets from the late 1990s through the early 2000s.

Fishing is considered the lifeblood of the area’s coastal villages, including Balubad, Lubi, Talaba, and Kilait, and for years, village fishermen fought to protect the waters that fed their families.

In 2005, the fishermen turned to the Rotary Club of Atimonan, Quezon Province, Philippines, for help. They decided to build an artificial reef.

The club partnered with the Rotary Club of Madera, California, USA, on a Rotary Foundation grant to help fund the project, which would cost more than $1 million.

They built the reef in the shape of a Rotary wheel, which just happens to have plenty of surface area for coral to grow on and plenty of nooks for fish to shelter in. Made of steel-reinforced concrete, it’s 600 meters from the coastline, measures about 4 meters tall and 21 meters wide (13 by 70 feet), and weighs several tons.

Today, the wheel, touted as the biggest artificial reef in the Philippines, is covered with coral and has withstood several typhoons. It attracts fish, including jacks, surgeonfish, mangrove red snappers, groupers, longfin bannerfish, flounders, pompanos, batfish, and barracudas, among other marine creatures.

“Before the reef, the fishermen were barely able to catch a kilo [2.2 pounds] of fish apiece,” says Oca Chua, past president of the Rotary Club of Atimonan and the project’s chair. “Today they catch fish weighing up to 2 kilos apiece a day.”

Protecting the fish has been just one benefit of the effort. The reef also became a tourist attraction that boosted the local economy. Fishermen build bamboo rafts and rent them to tourists who visit the reef to eat, rest, dive, and even feed the fishes.

The Rotary Four-Way Test was originally created for what company?

Found this on Facebook. Posted on “Rotary Geeks” by Jeff Mount. What a great way to teach kids the Four-Way Test! “Look what was just delivered - a custom Rotary chess board with the 4-Way Test! I've been working for the past few months with a chess store vendor to make this dream come true. My graphic artist took my crude PowerPoint prototype and created a beautiful piece of artwork from which this chess board was fabricated. I'm also working with Chess 4 Life owner, Elliott Neff, to get his chess curriculum in the schools. This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for Rotarians to go into the schools and teach chess and the 4-Way Test, which is needed now more than ever. The Fayetteville club President just saw this and wants me to come talk to his club asap about how to get this started. I'm headed to Orlando August 3 to work with Chess 4 Life on their curriculum rollout to the Orlando school district. Talk about a labor of love! I'm writing an article for The Rotarian magazine about this adventure. Please contact me if you're interested in any updates and I'll put you on my mailing list, my fellow Rotary geeks. “

  • August is Membership and New Club Development Month From Stroudsburg Rotary Club, PA

August is Membership Month, a time to celebrate your club, your members, and the good you do in your community and around the world! Many people join Rotary to serve others locally and globally. Rotary allows members to make a difference while promoting fellowship and international understanding.

We offer many programs that allow you to engage

with fellow members and make new connections

outside your club and district. Here are just a few

    ways to get more involved:

Through the Rotary Friendship Exchange program, you can discover new cultures and make new friends from all over the world. Read these Friendship Exchange stories to learn more about the program and contact your district’s Friendship Exchange chair to get involved.

By joining a Rotary Fellowship, you can share your passions and hobbies with fellow Rotarians. Read about the experiences of current fellowships.

Collaborate with subject matter experts from a Rotarian Action Group or lend your expertise to empower Rotary members to improve service projects.Read about the activities and projects current action groups have undertaken.

By sponsoring a Rotary Community Corps, you can enhance community engagement and ensure project sustainability by positioning local leaders to pioneer change. Read how RCCs are making a difference.

The Avenues of Service are part of the guiding principles of Rotary and the foundation of club activity:

    • Club Service focuses on fellowship between members and creating a stronger relationship with the local community. Learn how a Ugandan club brought hope to local communities through health projects.

    • Community Service focuses on improving the quality of life in nearby areas and serving the public interest. Read how the Rotary Club of Bozeman Sunrise, Montana, USA, brought its community together.

    • International Service exemplifies your global reach in promoting peace and understanding. Sponsor or volunteer on international projects, or attend a project fair to make a global impact.
