As a Rotarian, I will

NETWORKING

Networking at the Club level in Rotary is a fairly recent development, at least at the level of intensity that it is being done now. At the Inter-national level, our best example is the Polio Plus. It started as a purely Rotary project in the early 80s, but we gradually began to realize that to achieve our objective of wiping out Polio from the entire world, it was necessary to tie up with other like-minded organizations, the gov-ernment and corporate donors. Actually, in the Philippines, we made history because it was the first time Rotary, Lions, Jaycees, Kiwanis and others worked hand in hand on a single project. It not only made his-tory, but each organization that participated came out stronger than we were before. In our club, our formal entry into the networking world started when we started becoming disappointed with the results of what was then the usual form of extending medical service - medical missions. These once in six months activity was really not effective simply because the beneficiaries cannot schedule their need for medical service only when we come every six months, so normally we treated only coughing, sore muscles, some minor wounds and the like. So the idea of having a per-manent clinic took shape. It was aptly called Kalusugan Center, which expanded into the Karunungan Center and then the Kabuhayan Cen-ter. It was such an innovative idea it helped the club win the Most Out-standing Club award. From the beginning, it has always been a four-party venture - our Club, the Barangay, the residents and the Quezon City Red Cross. It has not been easy at times, but the validity and nobility of the program is the prime motivation for us to keep it going. And it will go on, long after we are no longer here, because the new members will keep it alive, awards or no awards.

November 19 2013 Meeting The meeting on November 19 2013 had PDS Jun San Juan as speaker talking about the Internet and Smartphones which unfortu-nately many in the audience failed to understand as it was a summary of probably two weeks of lectures compressed into 1.5 hours. Anyway for those that understood the speaker was barraged with a lot of ques-tions specially from Pres Al Villacorte and PP Alex Buot. The club had two German guests one of whom was from Barangay Horseshoe. Josh Subahri may eventually be persuaded to join Rotary Club of New Manila Heights if he decides to relin-quish his recent induction into a Mandaluyong Rotary Club. The club started a fund drive for Typhoon Yolanda which PP Baby Allado suggested be do-nated to the District 3780 Rotary

Cares program in Ormoc City. Several members and one of the guests started the ball rolling by contributing to the fund. PP Baby Allado is a mem-ber of the District Team that assessed the situation in Ormoc which will be the base of operation for Rotary

Cares. The Club also finalized the initial payment for the books in order that the initial books can be sent to Sulu. PP Boyet Alfonso the birthday celebrant was nowhere to be found.

The club’s support to the twin projects must be manifested in the

members' more active participation in both the dramatization of

the Komiks contents and the translation of the Komiks to English.

This project is supported not only by the club but also by the De-

partment of Education, , District 3780 and even the Rotary Club

of Fairlawn, Sunrise New Jersey, USA. Can the club count on its

members?

PP Alex Buot recently inspected the warehouse where the books committed for the Jolo, Sulu were stored. The dona-tions from other entities have started trickling in and it has been deemed that an initial shipment of books be under-taken and delivered to fulfill a commitment to provide books to the selected schools Contributions from Rtn. Irma de Castro and her friends from PVB and various Rotary Clubs helped increase total contri-butions to PHP 30,000.00 which have been deposited in the Books Across the Seas Account. Arrangements are now being made to ship the initial batch through Ms. Jainab and Ret. General Ecarma

President Amba “Al” Villacorte

A Hero In All of Us At the turn of the century when our little republic was born, we had only a few million people, and yet we produced so many great leaders, heroes all. The Philippines has grown bigger ever since, and with close to a 100 million Filipinos today, and still counting, one might expect that we have by now a dozen Rizal and Bonifacio. Alas, a few good men had come and gone, some were martyred at the height of their youth, some lost their bearings on the way to the top, others lived too long, past their time and role in history. Do we really need heroes? Would a dozen Rizal or Bonifacio be able to rescue our people from the bondage of poverty; would an army of heroes vanquish the evil horde of corrup-tion? Can anyone unite a nation divided by geography, subdivided by culture and politics, a nation whose leaders unashamedly prefer pecuniary pursuits and personal gains to public service? Can anyone transform a mass of humanity that merely stand and wait for gravy trains, the great many that are beholden to family dynasties, the multitude who sell and buy votes, idolize celebrities and screen heroes? Why then do we look for heroes? Truth is - heroes are not necessarily good leaders, and some heroes have feet of clay. This is why every crisis in our country is described as a crisis in leadership. In times of a great calamity we always look for a leader - who's in charge here? - a leader who can command people and move things, and if something goes wrong or falls short of our expectations, we also look for a leader who we can blame and hang. Believe me, not even a saint can survive in Malacanang unscathed, untarnished. Filipinos seem to take special delight in seeing their heroes fall. Nowadays we continue to bemoan the absence of effective leaders, not the absence of civic consciousness; we con-tinue to point the finger of blame at our leaders, not at ourselves, we pilloried leaders who are weak and indifferent, when we are equally guilty of apathy, petty rivalry, indiffer-ence, when we can be better off to help ourselves first, pick up a shovel and dirty our hands, help push the country's slow recovery. I've said it before and I'll say it again: The government can only do so much, but for a united Filipino nation every thing is possible. An oft-repeated line from a German play reads: "Pity the country that needs heroes". This statement applies to us: because we are many islands, weak and divided, we always search for heroic leaders, when in truth and in fact we need to be heroic ourselves. We don't need heroes to make our country great. We, the people, can do it ourselves. There's a hero inside each of us somewhere. . .a hero in all of us. And the change we want to happen in our country should begin with us, within us, now. ----------------------------- ". . . 95% of roofings in all commercial and residential buildings at Ormoc were gone. We were assisted in Cebu by PP Jonthan Gesalem who belong to the Rotary Club of D3860 DG Ed Chiongbian. He acquired for us cooking equipments including big casse-role and industrial burners, etc. In Cebu. Part of the cooking equipments, plastic plates and cups were loaded and brought by us in the boat so that we can start the feeding center ASAP. Some boxes of medicines from a group at UST were also brought by PP Nilo Rapista. We inspected the site and met with the members of RC Ormoc and principal of the school. The letter of agreement regarding the joint partnership between RI District 3780 and RC Ormoc was executed by Pres Troy Bumagat. The letter pre-signed by DG Francis Rivera, was hand carried by LG Chito Borromeo and was read and explained in the meeting. On the project site, we had a short meeting with Shelter for Humanity headed by Jonathan Henderson of UK funded by the Jane Henderson Foundation, as well. His father is Tom Henderson a Rotarian and founder of Shelter Box.

Thank you for the support. In addition for the continuous daily feeding, we immedi-ately commenced rehab of schools in linao. We organized a construction crew of 4 people with rc ormoc and buy galvanized roof to repair school buildings & damaged houses so classes will start immediately & evacuees can go back to their homes. PP Baby Allado was with the initial group of the District 3780 team that went to Ormoc to determine the requirements to rehabilitate the area. Ormoc was chosen since the LGU there is fully functioning and the Ro-tary Club of Ormoc is able to fully network with District 3780 Team
