The best system of trenches in Australia: World War I training trenches at
the Jerrabomberra Wetlands
This year marks the centenary of the Duntroon instructional trench system, used to train
officers and senior NCOs in trench warfare and bombing. What was once a ‘bombing
paddock’ is now in a nature reserve for wetlands and water birds. This presentation tells the
continuing story of finding, revealing, and presenting the remains of a long-forgotten part of
Canberra’s history.
At last week’s meeting Geoff Jessop was our visitor.

From the President
Dear members and friends
Thanks to you, movie ticket sales shot up over the weekend and now stand at 97. As a
result, Bob has been able to negotiate a cinema with 170 seats. This means you can keep
on selling or buying if you wish. Robyn will have physical tickets available on Friday. If you
haven't let her or me know that you plan to buy some that day, it would help us keep track if
you could drop us a line. The online booking system is also still in place.
I am very much looking forward to inducting Jo Hart this Friday. She is already working on
trying to get us a RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) candidate. Also, this will be
Gavin's last meeting for a while. First he is off to Paris for work (lucky thing) and then he
and Geoff are getting married in New Zealand before settling into their rustic idyll. Please
come along to support Jo and to wish Gav, and by proxy Geoff, all the best if you can.
We now have definite details about the Rotary Peace Scholars dinner (see below). The
eight scholars are undertaking the Masters in International Relations in Peace and Conflict
Resolution at the Rotary Centre at Queensland University. This program is incredibly
competitive and the Scholars usually have significant life experience in working with people
affected by conflict. It is always a fascinating night. Greg is going so please let him know if
you are able to join him.
Darren is still seeking volunteers for the Ronald McDonald House Cycle 2016 on Saturday
14 May. Don't be put off by the fact that you know nothing about bike riding events as
Darren is the guru on this and will instruct us all.
John is planning a social brunch at the Mill House Café in Queanbeyan. As always, friends
and family will be warmly welcomed. The date will be announced on Friday and will be
included in subsequent bulletins.
I hope you are all getting out and about and enjoying our beautiful Canberra autumn.
Rosemary
Peace Scholars dinner
It will be held on Monday 2 May, 6.30pm for 7pm, at The Deck at Regatta Point.
The cost is $65pp (this covers the meals of the eight Peace Scholars who are visiting
from Brisbane). Bookings can be made here. Greg is going so if anyone else plans to
(partners and friends also welcome), can you please make your own booking and let
Greg know?

Tava
Here are photos of Tava (in the dark t-shirt), our ROMAC 'baby' in the Solomon Islands. He and his siblings were taking part in this year's annual Rotary Easter Fun Run, organised by the Rotary Club of Honiara. Tava managed the first 3km of the 5km run/walk (first part - uphill) and was carried the final 2km. He enjoyed it. Message from Tava's father Tapera: 'I think your club members there would be happy to see Tava after 5 years. Tava is one of the fruits of your hard work, commitment and love to give children another chance to life, health and to restore dignity. We are trying to help Rotary ROMAC in small ways.'

SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR OUR UNSUNG HEROES AWARD
Having been the initiator of the Unsung Heroes Award, the Club is keen to again identify and
acknowledge the unsung heroes - the quiet achievers - in our community.
The Award, introduced by the Club in 2009, was established with the aim of acknowledging
those who generally go about their activities not seeking recognition but nevertheless are
instrumental in assisting local community organisations to succeed in what they do for the
community.
“Unsung heroes serve the Woden community in many areas making an outstanding
contribution to community life: protecting the environment; supporting youth and seniors;
selflessly helping others; among other things." To recognise their efforts we are inviting
nominations for each of the following categories:
Individuals
Business
Schools and their supporters
Non-government organisations, such as sporting, social and community groups.
Nominations should be addressed to Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak, PO Box 99, WODEN
ACT 2606 or emailed to Robyn Beetham at [email protected] by COB Monday, 17
June 2016. The winning nominees will be presented with their Awards at our 7.30a.m. Club
meeting at the Woden Southern Cross Club on Friday, 15 July 2016.

It’s time for the next Abbeyfield Garran Working Bee!
Garran Abbeyfield House is a local organisation that offers comfortable and affordable housing for older adults and adults with a mild intellectual disability. To keep the garden in top shape as we move through autumn, there will be a working bee involving volunteers and family members of those living in Garran Abbeyfield House. We would really appreciate 5 or 6 extra people to come and help out. When: Between 9am and midday, Saturday 30 April. Where: 15 Stephens Place, Garran. What: light gardening, yard maintenance & some cleaning – it would be best to bring a hat and a pair of gloves.
Feel free to come along to part of this or for the whole time. There will be sunscreen, water, some soft drinks and a free sausage sizzle at the end for everyone who helps. There is no need to fill in any paperwork, we will have a sign in sheet on the day which we will ask everyone to sign. If you have any questions, please call Gavin on 0423 245 470.
RECYCLE FOR SIGHT
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 150 million people have blurred vision due to uncorrected refractive errors, such as near or far sightedness. The inability to see clearly can prevent children from learning in school, adults from finding work or staying employed, and older adults from living independently. Often, a simple pair of eyeglasses can bring the world into focus, but a lack of access to basic care prevents many people in developing nations from getting the treatment they need. Cost is also an issue; in a developing country a pair of glasses may cost as much as a month’s wages.
15 April 2016 Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak
However, with your help, the Lions Recycle for Sight program is bringing clear vision to those in need. Please bring your used prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses to our Rotary meetings before 15 April and they will be passed on to the Lions Club of Tuggeranong. The glasses will then shipped to the nearest Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre, where volunteers sort the glasses, clean them and determine their prescription strength. After carefully packaging the refurbished spectacles, Lions store them until they can be distributed, usually through humanitarian missions to developing nations. Each year, Lions Clubs in Australia and Japan annually send 500,000 pairs of glasses to six recycling centres. Your contribution to this program would be appreciated. Please see Gavin for more details.

District 9710 Conference Invitation
Presidents 2016-17
District 9710 Conference for 2016 is being held in the city of Goulburn from the 27th to 30th October 2016. The organising committee and I invite you and your club members to Goulburn to not only hear interesting speakers but also for yourself and your partner to enjoy the sights, sounds and what Goulburn has to offer.
The conference will commence on Thursday evening 27th October with a Civic Reception being held by the Mayor of Goulburn where all conference attendees are welcome to attend. This will be held at the Grace Millsom Centre at no cost to the attendees.
The main sessions for the conference will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings at the Soldiers Club, a marvellous comfortable venue. On Friday and Saturday afternoons the organising committee have arranged for you to select from a range of tours that you may attend or perhaps you would like to enter the golf competition that is being organised. These are not included in your registration fee for the conference but can be purchased as an add-on.
The committee has been working hard on keeping costs down for all persons attending and if you register for the whole conference the cost is $110 which includes morning teas on all three days, lunches on all three days and the Governors Dinner on Saturday night. There also will be day registrations at $40 per day (morning tea and Lunch included) and separate dinner registrations for Saturday night at $35.
For the first 160 full registrations received you will be able to choose an historic train ride to Bundanoon on either Friday or Saturday afternoon. Enjoy the olden days of train travel and have a cuppa at historic Bundanoon.
Registrations for the conference will open in early April and if you are planning on coming I suggest you book your accommodation soon.
