Greetings Rotarians and Friends,

A moment to reflect!

Wow what a week, the first female prime minister of Australia and now the Rotary Club of Richmond has inducted a female President! Not a first for our club as I follow on from Past Presidents Sue Bolton, Judy Nettleton and Janice Kesterton.

I am sure Julia will be quoted often for her following statement as it reflects my own thoughts: ‘There will be some days I delight you. There may be some days I disappoint you. On every day I will be working my absolute hardest for you.'

Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, Thursday, 24th June 2010

From President Jo: I will approach my role as President of the Club with passion and integrity and will look forward to working and with all of you over the next year. It will be my aim to have fun enjoy fellowship and value the friendships that Rotary endears.

The Changeover dinner on Monday night at Riversdale Golf Club was a great occasion; it was a time for us to thank Past President Michael O’Sullivan for leading our Club successfully into the new Rotary year. We will all miss Sally’s welcoming smile and will look forward to her attendance whenever time permits. Michael and Sally can now enjoy a wel-earned break although I know that their commitment to the Club will continue through their ongoing involvement in 2010-2011. Michael has demonstrated the values of Rotary ‘Service above Self’ through his hard work and commitment to Rotary and our Club.

We welcomed our newest member Kristen Widdop who will join the New Generations Committee as she has a particular interest in young people……

I hope you all enjoyed a short break from Rotary – Michael and I took the opportunity to head north for some sun and sunshine but unfortunately for us we left it in Melbourne – however a lovely break spent with friends.

We held our final joint Board Meeting for 2010-2011 on Thursday and this was held at our home, it only seems like yesterday when I was telling you all about my first Board Meeting!

More reflections…

The FIRSTS just keep on coming…! On Monday I chaired my first Board Meeting, supported by the Club’s Leadership Team This was a new experience for me and I found it quite daunting, - but I am sure as the months go by it will become easier!. The Board meeting provided me with an opportunity to introduce the new Assistant Governor; Henry Drury, and also to present him with a copy of the Club Strategic Plan for 2010-2011.

Until next week – the last one!!!! Jo Cowling President 2010-2011

Sharmila Archarya, 2010-2011 Ambassadorial Scholar –

‘My name is Sharmila Acharya and I am very fortunate to be the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Rotary District 5360 (Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise). I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Chemical Engineering Undergraduate degree in 2006, but am now following a different path in the Environmental Engineering area, specifically Water and Wastewater Treatment. I am here in Melbourne to pursue my Masters of Environmental Engineering with a focus on Water Resources at the University of Melbourne.

My interest in the Rotary Foundation came from its commitment to the community and instilling goodwill to the global environment. I feel that my vision is aligned with Rotary's vision as I have been an active member of the Southern Alberta community from a young age. My most notable commitments include: The Alberta Water Works Association, Green Calgary, United Way and Toastmasters International. I have used my status as an East Indian Classical dancer to help out many non-profit organizations and support many charitable functions for 5 years. Thank you Rotary for giving me this opportunity to continue doing what I love to do. Sharmila is hosted by RC Glen Eira. Counsellor: PP Adrian Nelson.’ Source: Foundation News, February 2011

WE CELEBRATED AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH'S 'HAT DAY' AT OUR CLUB MEETING, 6TH JUNE.

JUNE IS ROTARY FELLOWSHIPS MONTH

‘Fellowship is wonderful; it illuminates life’s pathway, spreads good cheer, and is worth high price.” Rotary Founder Paul Harris www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_ppt/fellowships_presentation_en.ppt

‘It is worth noting that one of the key factors in successful Rotary membership is fellowship, whether organized (as with Rotary Fellowships) or informal. Without the fellowship of other Rotarians and the FUN we have in our clubs, Rotary membership for many would be dull and boring, resulting in a loss in membership. The fellowship we enjoy with Rotarians, with the club, the district and internationally makes personal Rotary membership an integral part of our lives.’ Source: http://www.rotarydistrict6980.org/

RICHMOND ROTARY ROUNDUP – Annie Wysham, Tiger Rag Sub-Editor and Club Sergeant

ü'Know Your Numbers' - Stroke Awareness week community stations were set up at the Queen Victoria market on Thursday 26th May. RCR’s Secretary, PEN Sue Bolton, was once again a volunteer with the RC Carlton’s blood pressure group, 'Know Your Numbers' (KYN). Dr. Gedeon Herschberg was the volunteer MD involved and sent a note of thanks to Sue and her 5 fellow helpers: ‘…I would like to thank you all now through this email for helping out for that day. It was a

good presence for Rotary in the community and we did check 97 blood pressure passers-by!’ Well done Sue – your gentle touch would have set those pulses racing for sure!

ü A new Police Leadership mentor for the Rotary Year 2011-2012 was sought by PE Rob at our last meeting to replace Jean Marc Berthier. This year (all pictured), Jean Marc (Rotary mentor) and Nicole Brookes (Business mentor) mentored Superintendent Dean McWhirter who was a guest speaker at our Club on Monday, 21st March, 2011, talking about ‘Policing Our Local Community’. PEN Sue Bolton has now volunteered to be a mentor again as she enjoyed the experience in 2009-2010

when she mentored Inspector Michelle Henderson. (Michelle became a frequent and welcome visitor to RCR and volunteered for the Mock Job Interviews held last month at MGC.) President Jo, PE Rob, Jean Marc and Sue attended the Rotary District 9800 & Victoria Police Mentor Program dinner on July 9 at the RACV Club. The dinner was held as a ‘thank you’ to all of last year’s group and as a graduation where all participants received a certificate of completion.

üYarra Sustainability Awards 2011 winners – John Liddell has let the Tiger Rag team know that the winners of the 2011 Yarra Sustainability Awards were announced on Thursday 2nd June 2011, at a celebration at Richmond Town Hall. The winner in the Community Action section was Beyond Zero Emissions. Richmond Rotary Club heard the BZE story back in January this year when Michael Staindl was guest speaker and told how Australia could reach a state of zero carbon emissions for static power in the next 10 years. John Liddell chaired the meeting. Since the release of the Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy Plan in 2010, BZE has apparently grown from humble beginnings to an NGO that has hundreds of volunteers.

John Liddell has resigned from Richmond Rotary, effective from the 30th June 2011, and is joining the BZE team of volunteer speakers. To facilitate his new interest, John undertook their speaker training for volunteers over the long weekend. We’re pleased to report that John and Glenys will both remain as Friends of Richmond Rotary. Good news! Glenys is keen to continue to assist as Secretary for the Richmond Rotary ‘Slade Literary Awards’. [RCR & FoRR always know how to create a great atmosphere too…with zero ‘emissions’ of course to save a meeting/function ‘climate change’. Sub-Ed.]

LAST CLUB MEETING: ‘SPEAKER’S CORNER’ Meeting 2139, Monday 6th June, 2011

Our Guest Speaker: Graeme Duncan His Topic: The McArthur Ridge (Australia) Story – How a holiday visit to the Otago Region of NZ turned into an Australian distribution business for a New Zealand wine. Meeting Chair: Past Richmond Rotarian, PP Michael Cowling TR Reporter: Annie Wysham – Tiger Rag Sub-Editor

We love guest speakers who come bearing gifts, so the chance to experience the products of McArthur Ridge winery for ourselves was one too good to pass up…in the interest of research of course and furthering our knowledge! Graeme introduced us to the story of New Zealand-based MacArthur Ridge wines & how he and his daughter became involved as the Australian distributors purely by chance in November 2010. Located in New Zealand’s Central Otago, McArthur Ridge lies just outside the township of Alexandria on the South Island. It boasts one of the largest vineyards spanning over 800 hectares with 173 hectares planted exclusively with pinot noir. ‘Set at altitude, the cool climate, infertile soils & warm but short-lived summers of central Otago provide a pristine environment for winegrowing, especially pinot noir.’ Graeme is a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for wine & knows a good drop when he tastes it – better still that friends of he and wife Micki, own the winery & were looking to introduce their fine pinot noir wines & brand to Australia! (Ideal friends to have!) So Graeme shared with us the story & the difficulties and processes for convincing distributors to stock the wines. Persistance paid off - the 3 McArthur Ridge pinot noir labels are: Brass Knocker Pinot Noir – an entry level wine (now available at Dan Murphy’s (Vic – *still striving to sell Australia-wide) and David Jones nationally); McArthur Ridge Southern Tor – handpicked wine & very good value (available at restaurants, **Dan Murphy’s (Vic), David Jones nationally) & selected fine wine distributors; McArthur Ridge Pinot Noir – top of the range available - at leading restaurants: Donovan’s, Woolshed, Stokehouse, Kitchen Cat [formerly ‘15’] and the Hilton Hotel – the first people to take an order.) Seems restaurants mark up 150% ! $10-$20 goes in government taxes, so bulk sales are the only solution for the supplier. New Zealand pinot noir is very ‘floral’; colour is darker, left on the skin longer. Pinot noir is the most versatile of all varieties.

Graeme’s tips: Open 30 minutes before drinking & aerate slightly by decanting or use an aerator to improve even further. If they last on your tongue for at least a minute then you know that you’ve got a good wine. Question time succeeded in flushing out earnest Rotary red wine drinkers! Want to learn more - then go to their Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/McArthur-Ridge-Wines/125508210795689?v=info Website: http://www.mcarthurridgewines.com.au/ Order thru the website with the code – Deal 4 Rotary – to receive an RCR discount. Now WE’LL DRINK TO THAT Graeme!

From President Jo: 'The recent MUNA participants, Rosie and Celine, said a very big thank you to me on the Sunday (5th June) that I picked them up from Camp Getaway at Axedale. They said that they would be very happy to speak at the Club.... Both the girls fathers also said a big thank you - it may be verbal but they were very grateful for their daughters' opportunity [to attend MUNA].' See letter of thanks page 9

PP & former Richmond Rotarian, Michael Cowling, consort of our much-loved President (Princess) Josephine, is a friend of the guest speaker, Graeme Duncan. Graeme spoke about McArthur Wines at the last Club meeting held on Monday 6th June 2011 and PP Michael was invited to be Chair. The fez-wearing Michael (for our ARH - Hat Day acknowledgement), made a ‘big impression’ on everyone… except his dear wife it seems! She forgot to welcome him or to acknowledge him; and then forgot to thank him for attending and for being the Chair of the night! Love really is blind so it seems! The Sergeant will happily extract the fines for these misdemeanours of course. Manna from heaven!

THANK YOU FROM OUR MUNA STUDENTS

To the Rotary Club of Richmond,

How should we begin to thank you?!

Roisin and I had the most fantastic time at MUNA this year; from the great debates we had, to the meeting of other great minds!

The Rotary Club of Richmond made this amazing experience possible and we would like to convey our greatest amount of THANKS!

The food was great, the accommodation better than any school camp we’ve been on and the Rotarians were extremely welcoming. We thought we would never meet other young people that are just as passionate about learning about the United Nations, but we were wrong.

Because of The Rotary Club of Richmond we have!

We have gained a vast amount of knowledge about the United Nations and every State’s role in it, as well as the role of Rotary on a local and international level.

Thank you again for the most inspiring weekend!

Love Celine Hua-Ching and Roisin Parnell [Melbourne Girls College students]

[MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) was held at Rotary’s Camp Axedale, Kimbolton Axedale Road, Axedale (between Heathcote and Bendigo), Friday 3rd June – Sunday 5th June, 2011. Sub-Ed.]
