Tonight we will be hearing from two people who have been mentorees in the Club’s Guru Mentor programme chaired by Ted Anderson.1 Tamas Valfi, started out doing house decluttering, then broadened in to home help services and then personal training and recently has completed an intensive renovation course concentrating on real estate.Tamas, who was originally a journalist from Hungary trying to make his way in Australia, has been mentored by Will Rogers and Ted Anderson at different times. He will be accompanied by his partner who has a successful career with a pharmaceutical company and who has also done the renovation /real estate course and will assist Tamas in his new project.2 Galit Segev who has visited our club before to describe her bread mix and conserves business, will give us an update on her progress and the opportunities she has considered to partner her business with others to facilitate manufacturing, and achieve economies of scale which she could not achieve at local markets. She has used these to gain feedback and product development.She has grown her business as a food consultant and developed a range of chocolates whilst raising three young children. Not an easy task when you set your standards as high as Galit does.

Exchange student 1 Visiting Rotarians 1
Last Tuesday evening, we formally welcomed our inbound Exchange Student from Brazil, Caroline Viotto. Carol gave a very impressive presentation to our guests and members. Present as guests were Carol’s present host parent, Suzie Murtagh; one of her next host parents, Teresa Kwan; the Rotary District Counsellor for Brazil, Christine Zec; and an inbound student from Mexico, Santy.Carol gave us an insight to her family, her father a lawyer and mother a teaching professor. Carol was born in Umuarama in the state of Parana, but was brought up in Moreira Sales in southern Brazil which has a population of just 12,000 people. However, she attended and finished school at Umuarama.Carol’s presentation included much interesting information on Brazil. With a population of 201 million, Carol described its location in South America, initially a Portuguese colony but now a federal republic. Carol outlined the climate, the economy, exports, the present government and President’s residence, the culture and music which she adores.Carol also showed a video of the various geographical areas and features of Brazil and gave us a sample of Brazil’s cuisine.Carol told us that she had always wished to exchange since she was 11 years old which was supported by her parents.Carol’s preparation shows her exceptional discipline and organisation while her first class presentation demonstrated her self-confidence. It appears we are going to learn nearly as much from her as she will from us, and we wish her well during her stay in Australia.Thanks Carol.Robert Brell See pictures on pages 4 & 5

President’s ReportTonight we hear from some of the young people who have been mentored with their businesses by the Roseville Chase ‘Golden Gurus’ team. It should be a wonderful insight into their business development, challenges, opportunities and future. We are grateful to our team of mentors for their time, effort and investment.Our Annual Golf Day is just 2 weeks away, on Wednesday 26th March. Places are limited for both Golf and Dinner – so if you have people keen to come, they’ll need to register soon. Thanks to all those members/partners who have been working hard on getting sponsors and gathering auctions prizes. Please return your raffle tickets/money to Richard by 18th March. Members and Partners need to register for the Golf Day and Dinner via the Registration Form to Robert Brell, so please email them through in the next week or so.At last Tuesday’s Meeting we were delighted to hear from Caroline Viotto, our 2014 Inbound Exchange student from Brazil. Caroline arrived in Sydney on February 15th and is already settling in, staying with Duncan and Suzie; and going to school at Killara High. Caroline gave a great oversight of Brazil, her hometown, her family and friends and Rotary in D4630. It was one of the best introductory presentations from a Youth Exchange Student that we have ever had. I know that Caroline will have a great year in Australia.Thanks to everyone who helped at Bunnings BBQ on Sunday at such short notice – a great effort!We have our Community Service Awards Night coming up in May, please consider those you know volunteering in our local community, who maybe worthy of receiving a Community Service Award and please talk to Peter Lefmann or Sue Ward with nominations.Next Tuesday, we will have a Club Forum, so if there is anything that you’d like added to the agenda, please let me know. We also have planning time for committees and a briefing about the Golf Day and Dinner.President Jade

Rotary Leads Australia inMental Health Prevention
Mental disorders have become the main source of disability burden in Australia. In response, funding from the Australian Government has supported an increase in treatment services. However, as the percentage of people seeking treatment has risen from 37% to 46%, the prevalence of mental disorders in Australia appears to be unchanged. So the question remains: how do we reduce the impact of mental health on the Australian community?
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) has become one of the first research organisations to commit funding into finding preventions for mental disorders. At an ARH Symposium held last year, which brought together 25 of Australia’s top experts in Mental Health prevention, evidence showed that prevention is particularly promising for common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.
In conjunction with Rotary Clubs, they will also run health forums around Australia bringing information to the community of how they can prevent the development mental disorders in their own lives. Finally, a third program to put them ahead of the pack is the launch of an electronic newsletter spotlighting the latest research findings of mental health prevention across the lifespan.
Five new research projects will be funded this year in the area of mental health prevention:• A Multi-tiered approach to suicide prevention in young Australians - Tonelle
Handley, National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, NSW.• The prevention of mental health difficulties in adolescents using an emotion-
focussed parenting program - Sophie Havighurst, University of Melbourne, Vic.• Effective suicide prevention campaign material for young people: A randomised
controlled trial - Jane Pirkis, University of Melbourne, Vic.• Phase II study of an online population-based intervention to improve the mental
health of young people who are unemployed - Vanessa Rose, University of New South Wales, NSW
• Helping young Australians to “Look for Good”: A school-based trial of positive attention training to increase children’s emotional well-being and prevent anxiety and depression - Allison Waters, Griffith University, Vic.
For more information about these programs, or to sign up to receive the prevention email newsletter, please contact Australian Rotary Health on (02) 8837 1900 or email [email protected].

ABOUT ROTARYThe world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 by Paul Harris.
Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. More than 1.2 million Rotarians belong to over 34,100 Clubs in 210 countries and geographical areas. Rotary Club membership represents a cross-section of the community’s business and professional men and women. The world’s Rotary Clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
The main objective of Rotary is service – in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotarians develop community service projects that address many of today’s most critical issues, such as children at risk, poverty and hunger, the environment, illiteracy, and violence. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development.
The Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

OBJECT OF ROTARYThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
