Wars and conflicts leaves a bonanza for archaeologists to discover and catalogue and to put together the missing parts of the story. Michael Brendon has done this with the Lost Flotilla of landing craft lost on the Mediterranian island of Crete during the Second World War. Michael thanks for the stories.
This week we have Andrew Main, and old friend of mine and journalist of note. He will speak to us about the current political situation in Canberra and the likely ramifications.
Yours in Rotary,
President Duncan

The Things Kids ask
A little boy looks at his mum at a wedding and says, “Mummy, why is the girl dressed all in white?” His mum replies, “The girls is called a bride and she is in white because she’s happy and this is the happiest day of her life.” The boy nods and then asks, “OK, so why is the boy all in black?”

KILLARA MOCK INTERVIEWS
Last week our club was represented by Neil Howie, Stuart Frith, Cliff Garret, Mike Harrowell, Richard Wilmott and Ted Anderson as mentors interviewing students for imaginary job applications.
The students were required to find a job advertisement of interest, research to company, prepare a resume and application then attend a face to face interview of 30 minutes duration.
They were given a range of questions about self awareness, strengths, weaknesses, team work, values, direction, experience, planning, skills, motivation and confidence.
Around 180 students participated and were rated on their appearance, speech, manner, attitude and preparation all of which were discussed with them before a written assessment was given to the careers adviser Sophie Allen.
Some students showing leadership skills would be ideal for RYLA and a good source for future club sponsorships.
Some Asian students had a problem with handshakes and eye contact because they have different meanings in their culture but overall the students were competent and confident.
Compliments are due to Sophie Allen for the very efficient way in which the event was organised and thanks to our Rotarians who all enjoyed the task and the opportunity to refresh their contacts with the next generation.
NEWS OF BELGIUM EXCHANGE STUDENTSVery pleasing and comforting news via Jenny and Stephen Goldring and Diana Wilkinson that our past exchange students from Belgium, Patricia Bussett (1994/95) and Veo Royer (2007/8) respectively, and their families, are all safe and have not been harmed nor caught up anyway in the tragic suicide bombings in Brussells.
Thanks Jenny, Stephen and Di for the updates on the welfare of our former exchange students.

The Kid versus the Barber
A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer. ‘This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it you.’
The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, ‘Which do you want, son?’ The boy takes the quarters and leaves.
‘What did I tell you?’ said the barber. ‘That kid never learns!’
Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store. ‘Hey, son! May I ask you a question? Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?’
The boy licked his cone and replied, ‘Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!’
