Dear Fellow Rotarian:

You have undoubtedly seen the devastation wrought byHurricane Harvey over the past few days in the GulfCoast of Texas and Louisiana. The sad statisticscontinue to grow with each hour, and there is noquestion that this is an unprecedented natural disaster, among the worst in US history, with levels of damageexpected to be near those caused by Hurricane Katrina.

As Rotarians who always place Service Above Self, you and your club’s members are certainly asking“what can we do to help?” You’ve probably received pleas for support online, in social media, andperhaps even in direct emails, but who can you trust to respond in the way that is most appropriate andfair to all concerned?

The answer is simple: ShelterBox is Rotary’s one and only official disaster relief Project Partner, selected for this role because the leadership of Rotary International knows that our highly trainedresponse teams and support personnel share your values as Rotarians, and in many cases ARE Rotarians.

Our ShelterBox Response Teams (SRT), each of whom are Rotarians, are on the ground in Texas, andare in nearly constant communication with the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) inassessing the needs and potential solutions. We are in communication with each of the District Governorsin the impacted areas. A large shipment of our ShelterBoxtents are on route to the disaster area, and onepossible solution to the needs of the thousands of displaced families is a “shelter-in-shelter” system thatwe’ve previously used in similar situations, such as the tsunami in Japan.

These tents within an evacuation center offer families a private space to help preserve dignity, securityand aid in the recovery process, particularly where extended stays are likely. Our immediate response toHurricane Harvey was made possible by the past support of Rotarians such as those in your club. If you’dlike to play a role in our ongoing aid to families in need at this and other disasters (we are currently alsoactive in Syria, Iraq, Cameroon, Niger, Colombia, Somaliland and Nepal), visit our Hurricane Harveypage: www.shelterboxusa.org/harvey, or to immediately donate at www.shelterboxusa.org/donate whereyou will find a designated “Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund”. You can also feel free to reach out to me asyour local ShelterBox Ambassador if you have questions or need any other assistance.

Thank you for your interest and support!

Most sincerely,

J. Louis TurpinShelterBox Ambassador & Board MemberMember of the Rotary Club of Rhinebeck, NYDistrict Governor 2016•]17Rotary District 7210

Hello Everyone,

It is now officially Fall and what a beautiful day it is! This time of year many club activities slowdown a bit in preparation for winter and the second half of the Rotary year.

I've been asked to be chair one of my favorite annual District events - The Rotary LeadershipInstitute or RLI as many call it. I'm excited to once again get together with Rotarians fromthroughout the Hudson Valley as well as some who visit from Connecticut, Pennsylvania andsurrounding states. It's one of my favorite events because RLI isn't like most seminars. Each sessionisn't taught, but rather the attendees in each class discuss the topics and learn from each other. Witha little help from the facilitators of course. Through this interaction is how attendees gain the mostknowledge.

I still remember when I took Part I. It was held at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. We were asked tosubmit evaluations after the different sessions and I still remember Betsy Kopstein (who was thecurrent District Governor) asking me if she could use one of my comments during lunch at the endof the day. My comment was this: 'I've learned more about Rotary here at RLI in a few hours, thanI've learned in the three years I've been a Rotarian! I will definitely come back next year to take PartII.'

I'm happy to announce District 7210 will once again reimburse any Rotarian (of three years orless) for the cost of Registration. So new members attend FREE! This is open to all Rotarians andperfect for those interested in leadership roles; not only in Rotary but in their career as well.

So please read over the letter on the next page and join me on the morning of November 4th for aday of Rotary fellowship, knowledge and fun!

I look forward to hearing from you,

Penny

Past District Governor Penny Byron

RETAIN YOUR MEMBERS

EDUCATE YOUR MEMBERS

ENCOURAGE NEW LEADERS

DO IT ALL IN ONE RLI DAY !

September 22, 2017

Dear Rotarians:

Happy Fall. NOW is the perfect time to learn more about Rotary!

If you need HELP RETAINING club members or if you especially want to keep yourcurrent members excited about Rotary, it’s easy! Send them to the November 4,2017 Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training meeting at Mt. St. Mary’s College,Newburgh, NY, 9 AM – 3 PM. (A light breakfast and lunch will be served.)

New and long-term Rotarians alike especially club officers who attend a day of these RLIprograms become dedicated members. It’s like drinking from the Rotary fire hose! There is a wealth of resources in every session.

I encourage EVERY Rotary club to send members to The Rotary Leadership Instituteand new members attend free. You read that right! The District will reimburse NEWmembers of 3 yrs. or less who attend Part I who have not attended RLI before. (Yourclub or member must first register and pay online or with a check and will then bereimbursed in full after attending the event.) The cost for the day is $75.

New to RLI? Take Part I. If you’ve already taken Part I, II or III, take the next Part inorder. After Part III is the Graduate Course. Don’t get upset if you enjoy attending RLIand you’ve already ‘graduated,’ because you can continue to take the Graduation Courseeach year as the topics change annually. This year’s Graduation topics are Ethics &Diversity in Rotary.

Register today at www.rlinea.org (look for the Newburgh date in the left column). Formore information please e-mail me at [email protected].

Yours in Rotary Service, PDG Penny Byron
