DISTRICT 9675
AROUND AND ABOUT “Around the district and about Rotary”
“The Adventures of Bazza” DG Barry Antees
Where the path is well trodden it is always far easier to walk and
have time to admire the view and beauty of the surrounds. I would
like to thank Garry Browne and his team for clearing the way for not
only the 2014-2015 team, but all those who follow. Whether it be an
inaugural year for a business or a marriage it can be difficult but,
make it an inaugural year for a volunteer based organization, now this
is difficult, so Garry, thank you!
We have all be part of the Sydney Convention and it has brought a
number of rewards as Rotarians.
A broader awareness of the internationality of Rotary.
The diversity of an organization with community as a basis to de-
velop new and exciting projects.
Development of knowledge of the organization.
We have already seen enquiry from the public as a result of the pub-
licity surrounding the convention, but it is up to us as Rotarians to
build on the good work of the organisers of this event.
Plans are well advanced for the delivery of the “night of one thousand
dinners” complete with instructions in August. I am asking every mem-
ber of Rotary and Rotaract to invite into their homes or places of
business a minimum of ten people to inform them about the great
work of our Rotary Foundation. As a result, we have an opportunity to
increase awareness for the benefits of membership and to raise
funds for the Foundation.
We are continuing with the District Governor’s visits in cluster groups
with invited guests from local government and business so as to open
the path for Rotary to be once again a catalyst for creating an oppor-
tunity for these organisations to become part of Rotary in a new and
exciting way.
Continuing OUR Goals!
The Corporate Golden Microscope and Corporate Paul Harris Fellow
will continue into this year, and with the introduction of a path to
achieve this will grow and develop in the future so we can raise funds
for our two great Foundations, Australian Rotary Health and the
Rotary Foundation. Continued over page>
JULY 2014 Volume 1, Issue 1
I want to share with you the
wisdom of
"The Power of One"
One song can spark a moment, One whisper can wake the
dream, One tree can start a forest, One bird can herald spring,
One smile can start a friendship, One hug can lift the soul,
One word starts each prayer, One hope will raise our spirits, One touch can show you care, One voice can speak with wis-
dom, One heart can know what's true, One life can make a difference.
That difference can be you,
as You Light Up Rotary!
Other programs!
In April 2015 Rotary members, family and friends will take part in the
inaugural Rotary National Blood drive, where every Rotarian and Rota-
ractors from across Australia will assist the Red Cross by donating
blood and encourage others to do likewise. So we will be appointing
special vampires to co-ordinate our clubs to make this an annual large
event within our communities.
Again in April 2015 we will sending a Rotary Friendship exchange team
to Istanbul to attend an International Peace Seminar.
Training for Leaders!
Training will play a large part in this coming year and at the Sydney
Convention we were accepted as a District into the Rotary Leadership
Institute and we will commence module training of the international
recognized training program.
We will be sending an emergency services Vocational Training Team to
Singapore this year to teach and to learn from their counterparts in
Singapore.
District Conference
Between November 14th-16th The Multi District Conference will be
staged at the Canberra National Convention Centre with the theme:
“Our youth, Our future”, where we will be inspired and entertained.
Opening the Conference will Dr Brendon Nelson, Director of the Aus-
tralian War Memorial, marking the 100th years of the Gallipoli cam-
paign. All clubs will be able to exhibit their projects in the Rotary
Expo hall, allowing an opportunity to exchange ideas and thoughts with
clubs from our District and also with clubs from District 9710
On reflection:
I can remember watching a 20/20 game of cricket, where both sides
gave it their all. The winning side won by two runs. You could see the
excitement in the eyes of the winning players where each and every
one of them was thinking. Yes my batting that helped win this game, or
another was thinking-Yes it was my brilliant fielding that helped win
the game, and so it would go on and on with each player…….
But imagine the thoughts of the players from the losing team, each
and every one of them would be thinking if only I had have done “this
or that”.
Those moments of a lost opportunity only because at the time you nev-
er pushed yourself hard enough to be the winner.
For all Rotarians, I promise every moment as your District Governor I
want to finish this year without a moment’s thought of a lost oppor-
tunity and I implore each and every one of you to do likewise.

The IMAGINATION LIBRARY
The Imagination Library was
founded by Dolly Parton who grew
up with parents who could not read
and write well and is all about inspi-
ration and imagination. It was de-
veloped in 1995 by Dolly for her
native Sevier County, Tennessee.
Dolly wanted every preschool child
to have his/her own collection of
books.
After much thought, Dolly decided
to offer her Imagination Library
for replication in any community
that would financially support it.
Each month, from the day the child
is born until his/her fifth birthday,
a carefully selected book arrives
at the mailbox.
Kids across the country have
shared the excitement of running
to the mailbox to retrieve their
book.
More often than not, the child
wants the book read to them now-
not later, not tonight and not to-
morrow. Right now!
In District 9675, Sue Clark is lead-
ing the way with this project in the
Illawarra.
145 children are now registered to
receive books from the Imagination
Library.
For more information about
the programme and how you
can start up in your area,

I am a local resident in District 9675 and I would like to introduce The Surgery
Ship, a documentary which follows the dramatic story of Rotary partner Mercy
Ships and their work on a hospital ship in Africa to you and your club members.
The Surgery Ship follows a team of volunteer medics who offer lifesaving, trans-
formative surgery to people who have no other help. Many Rotary members past
and present have served on the ship.
The film is a moving and fascinating story which foregrounds the service given by volunteers. It broadcast recently on SBS to great reviews and has been nominat-ed for a prestigious Australian Directors Guild award. You can view film trailer at: www.thesurgeryship.com As Rotary and Mercy Ships are partners, we would like to offer you the oppor-
tunity to screen the film via our ‘Host a Screening’ program. Hosting a Screening
is a great way to raise awareness and can also be used for fundraising for your
group. It's also a very entertaining night! It can be done for any group size in any
venue you choose.
More information can be found on our website:

Rotarians and friends, Support the Australian Rotary Health Annual Race Day for Re-search (at Hawkesbury) in October. In that way we can proudly display that the event belongs to the Rotary Family for Public Relations. Please see our Golf for Research branding that displays the basis 'new' branding guidelines that we use if a District is involved. The RI Voice and Visual Identity Signature System organising princi-ples specify the wheel placed after the identifier.
Would it be possible to have a deci-sion that District 9675 supports the Australian Rotary Health Race Day in October and we could brand the event accordingly as District 9675 & 9685 Event supporting Australian Rotary Health? Have you read this months issue of Rotary Down Under?
Our new RI President Gary Huang seems delightful don’t you think?
What a great way to begin our Rotary year with the wisdom of Confu-
cius and the wealth of knowledge Gary and his whole family bring to
Rotary.
Mark Wallace’s editorial was interesting too! I don’t know how many
times I’ve made new years resolutions only to find that less than a
week later I have forgotten them. Thanks Mark for giving me moti-
vation to bring more to my Rotary Club.
Brendan Porter wrote about the great work ROMAC are doing and did
you see the article on the International Skype meeting at the Rotary
Club of Hawthorn in Victoria? What a great way to keep in touch
with our Rotary family and have a meeting around the catch up!

Remember our promise to all
children;
it may only be a plane ride away.
There is a simple answer as to why
we need to understand what polio is
and why we are committed to its
eradication; we will lose everything
we have worked for over so many
years and more than 10 million chil-
dren under the age of five could be
paralysed in the next 40 years – po-
lio would again be endemic and we
would have lost the opportunity of a
lifetime.
Although the global total new case
figures do not look good; 2012 was
223, in 2013 it was 416 and YTD for
2014 is 112, every day we are mak-
ing positive progress.
Top Islamic scholars recently met in Islamabad and have issued a decree, declaring the use of polio vaccine as fully permissible under Sharia to protect an individual from the crip-pling disease. They also vouched for the efficacy of the vaccine, saying it did not contain any harmful or ha-ram ingredients. This is really very positive.
June has seen massive displacement
of population from North Waziri-
stan, Pakistan, and the escalation of
fighting in Iraq: both developments
that test the polio programme’s pre-
paredness, flexibility and use of in-
novative approaches and partner-
ships. As thousands of people move
out of North Waziristan, the pro-
gramme has seized the opportunity
and has been working with local
governments to identify displaced
populations and reach them with
the polio vaccine
at either permanent transit points,
camps or once they reach host com-
munities. In Iraq, plans have been
adapted to access and immunize
displaced populations in new loca-
tions.
On 7-8 June, a door-to-door polio
vaccination campaign reached more
than 42,000 children in the Bara
area of the Federally Administered
Tribal Areas (FATA), Pakistan. This
was the first time in five years that a
comprehensive campaign has been
conducted in Bara, an area previ-
ously inaccessible due to insecurity.
The campaign – led by the FATA
Secretariat and conducted by volun-
teers – was made possible by new
financial support from the United
Arab Emirates.
The cost is approximately $US1 bil-
lion per year to continue our fight
and after we see no new cases we
will still need to support eradication
for a full three years to ensure that
the world is polio free. We still need
to concentrate on fundraising, advo-
cacy and hard work on the ground.
Eradicating this dreadful disease is
long hard work but when we have
finished, we will have achieved
something wonderful and lasting. If
you would like me to visit your clubs
not only to give updates but to ex-
plain the history to new members
and reinvigorate our efforts,
please ask.

The Rotary Clubs of NSW 2014 NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards Dear Presidents, Firstly let me wish you a truly successful year with your projects over the next twelve months. By now I am sure everything is running smoothly and you are wondering what all the stress was about. I am sure you all know about the NSW Police awards now in their fifth successful year and I thank your Club and District for all the past support. I will keep this brief as I know how valuable your time is. This year’s event will be held on Friday 7th November at Shangri La Hotel, Sydney. We expect about 500 guests to attend and hope your club will have some representatives there to support a local officer should there be a finalist from your area. You will find booking link below. Police Officers who win a local Rotary award in 2014 are automatically eligible for the State Award. All nominations (including local Rotary winners) then go to a judging panel made up of long serving Rotarians from a cross section of the Districts from which the finalists for the evening will be chosen. Each category will have three finalists and you will be notified of who the finalists are four weeks before the event. If I could ask the following of you it will go a long way to once again making this a highlight on the NSW Police calendar.
I would ask that you nominate someone in your club to promote this event in your area. Websites, Newsletters and club meetings.
If you already have your own local Police Officer of the Year award make sure you contact the Local Area Com-mander and have them submit the nomination as it can only be done through the Police intranet. They have already been contacted by the Commissioner’s office on how that is done.
You may only have one winner of the local award but the Commander should be encouraged to make nomina-tions in some of the other five categories.
Can you notify me directly of your local winner so I can double check we receive the nomination from the LAC. If you do not currently run a local Police Officer of the Year award I encourage you give some thought to
starting one and join the many others we have running in NSW The Customer Service Award nominations are open to all Rotarians and the General Public. The on-line link to
this can be found below. Please encourage your members to make some nominations.
For a promotional flyer and details of award categories contact me—details below.
The Customer Service Nomination link is: http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/services/customer_service_awards
The Booking Link is: www.sydneyrotary.com and click on The Events tab.
I thank you for your time and support and should you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Some interesting things
happened in July in years
past:-
July is named after Julius
Caesar who was born in the
month on July 12. The Dec-
laration of Independence
was signed on the fourth of
July, 1776 while the Bastille
was stormed on July 1789.
The Battle of Gettysburg
was fought between July 1
and 3, 1863 resulting in a
Union victory.
Louis Pasteur tested an
anti-rabies vaccine on July
6 while Hawaii was an-
nexed in 1898. The Battle
of Britain began on July 10.
The first atomic bomb is
detonated in New Mexico
on July 16. The great fire of
Rome occurred on July 18
as did the Spanish Civil
War. Neil Armstong was the
first man on the moon on
July 21 while Mussolini fell
on July 29, 1943.
If you have interesting facts
send them to me, I’ll try and
put them in the A&A.
Pennie.
The Conference fee will be $140 and the two optional dinners will be $105 .
