18 Jan 2016 Taiwan Student Recep[tion and Sharing

Six university Stu-dents from Taiwan were visiting Hong Kong on an ex-change program sponsored by our Club and our Kaohsiung South sister club. The club throw a welcome dinner for them but make use of the op-portunity to make it an ex-change/sharing among stu-dents from HK, Taiwan and China. There were total of more than 40 participants, most of them from different

universities in Hong Kong, including HKU, HKUST, BU, CU, Open U, and City U. The sharing was moder-ated by PP Iris Wan who led the Rotarct Club of New Asia College 8 years ago.

Two rounds of ice-breaking games were played out with participants sharing their views about community services and what types of project they most want to participate in.

Iris recently came back from the One Young World Summit at Bangkok at which she was able to connect with a number of like minded young people through her pre-summit initiatives. She conceived the “Super Connector” model whereby devel-oping or under-developed countries could “out-source” their problem to developed countries where volunteers could dr-vice “solution” for them. This was an interesting concept and PP August suggested solutions would best be using “local” resources rather than “imported”. There were also shar-ing by Pink and Yusa about their com-munity services organization and their project at Napel.

Shirley Lam, a final year student in Jour-nalism, shared her exchange experience at TaiTung and her observation of the Taiwan presidential election.

In his concluding remark, PP August pointed out that the world was chang-ing and we should know what were go-ing on around us. That is why “sharing” and “networking” should be the impor-tant focus of RCHKN.

21 Jan 2016 Luncheon Meeting

Rotarians welcome the Taiwan exchange students to their luncheon meeting. They were accompa-nied by rotaractors of RCHKN and RCNA.

Speaker of the day was Dr. Herman Tsui, a nuclear scientist who invented the machine that could de-stroy, rather than filter most, if not all, known germs/virus as well as volatile organic particles using the plasma technology. This would be the most ef-fective way to remove germs/virus because it would not rely on filter . The latter was common in the market but would not be effective unless

frequently washed. As a matter of fact, if the filter was not cleaned frequently enough, it might become a breeding ground for germs/virus. In addition, filter would be limited by their pore size which might still be larger than some germs/virus.

Using the machine would reduce energy consump-tion of the air conditioning system because more treated air could be recirculated within the system, hence reducing the energy load of treating incoming fresh air.

21 Jan 2016 Board Meeting

The January Board meeting was held the Lingnan Club. Spring Feast proposal and budget from the Interact Club of Shaukeiwan East Government Secondary School was ap-proved and so was the sponsorship of the Ro-taract Peace Concert. On community ser-vices, Director Samual reported the Trash to Treasure project would hold its training sessions in Feb, workshop in March and the competition in April. Rotaractors indicated their interest to help in the recycled PC donation program to be held on 27th Feb 2016.

PP Kenneth, a renowned Architect, gave a talk on Architecture and Photography at the January GM of the Rotaract Club of HK North. It was at the request of the Taiwan exchange students who would like to learn from HK North Rotarians. PP Kenneth interwove the Architectural language, photographic com-position and artistic proportion in one inter-esting and enlightening presentation.

This was also a farewell dinner for Taiwan exchange students who had been attend-ing lectures, visiting historical trails, took

a bird’s eye view of HK from the peak, and took part in community services. Their trip report will be presented in coming issues of the club bulletin. So stay tuned.

President Jeff also invited partipants to come to their Feb GM when PP Mac Chan would share his many voluntary services since graduation and the HK Norht Rotaractors came back from the Indo-nesian IS trip would report on what they have achieved.
