The 4 Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do . . .

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

ECRC Member Profile

Mary Kazlusky

Early years

Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan to teacher parents – Dad taught Junior High Math and Mom, HS English. I have a younger sister who taught terminally ill children at Johns Hopkins Hospital and a younger brother who is retiring this year as a HS Guidance Counselor and also taught HS English. Practically everyone on both sides of my family is, or was, an educator.

Michigan years

I grew up in the 50’s in a mid-size town just south of Detroit which was in its heyday at that time. It’s so sad to see Detroit today.

I loved sports (especially synchronized swimming) and music. I thought a major in physical education and minor in music at the University of Michigan would be perfect. Graduated from Michigan with the PE major but without the music minor – had to settle for English (surprise, surprise).

Teaching years

I taught HS PE in Evanston, IL at the largest high school in the country with 5000 students, 32 PE teachers, 17 gyms, 4 dance studios and 2 pools. They kicked me out after 3 years to get my masters degree.

I became a graduate assistant at the University of Massachusetts while working on that degree and ended up assisting the gymnastic coach (because I was tall and could “spot” the gymnasts). I also became a regional gymnastic judge while getting my degree in Human Movement Studies.

I taught at Mt Holyoke College after graduation from UMass. Left there after 3 years to teach and coach synchronized swimming at SUNY Cortland. I was kicked out again to go work on a PhD and began that odyssey at Syracuse University in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation. Became bogged down with dissertation advisors deserting me (they all moved to warmer climes – not thrilled with Syracuse in the winter). I went back to teaching part time at SUNY Cortland and then decided to sell real estate, also part time.

Real Estate, Securities and Trust Services years

I sold real estate and managed 3 offices for 12 years in Cortland, NY – hardly part time. I was very active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Realtors and the Cortland Repertory Theatre Board of Directors. I loved the business world and left the ivory towers of academia behind by opting not to finish my PhD. I was invited to join the Cortland Breakfast Rotary Club in 1990.

Finally, I, too, became disenchanted with winters in upstate NY and moved to Stuart, FL where I became an independent securities broker and registered representative for Royal Alliance Associates. I joined the RC of Stuart Sunrise. After 4 years I left the brokerage business and became an assistant to the president of SunTrust Bank/Treasure Coast. Moved up to the Marketing Department and was the Community Service Officer which meant I planned all of the SunTrust “events” for high net worth clients in conjunction with non-profit organizations in the immediate area.

I moved to Vero Beach and joined US Trust as a Trust & Investment Associate. I was quickly promoted to Trust Officer. Joined the RC of Vero Beach and later became one of the founding members of the RC of Orchid Island.

After six years and a takeover by Charles Schwab, US Trust restructured and half of our team in Vero was let go. I moved to Seattle to be closer to my sister and her family and soon joined the RC of Emerald City. Currently, I am a Trust Associate at Wells Fargo Bank.

Rotary has been a huge part of my life for twenty years and I have maintained friendships in all five clubs in which I have been a member. You will always find friends when you are a Rotarian.
