ROTARY CLUB OF DELANDMEMBER LIST
Introducing Our Honored Guest Speaker, Alan Eustace
The DeLand Rotary Club is honored to have Alan Eustace as our guest speaker in April. A bitabout this fascinating and accomplished individual. From Google.com:
Alan Eustace is one of Google’s senior vice presidents of search. He was previously SVP of engineering. He joined Google in the summer of 2002. Prior to Google, Alan spent 15 years at Digital/Compaq/HP’sWestern Research Laboratory where he worked on a variety of chip design and architecture projects, including the MicroTitan Floating Point unit, BIPS – the fastest microprocessor of its era. Alan alsoworked with Amitabh Srivastava on ATOM, a binary code instrumentation system that forms the basisfor a wide variety of program analysis and computer architecture analysis tools. These tools had a
profound influence on the design of the EV5, EV6 and EV7 chip designs. Alan was promoted to director of the Western Research Laboratory in 1999. WRL had active projects in pocket
computing, chip multi-processors, power and energy management, internet performance, and frequency and voltagescaling. In addition to directing Google’s engineering efforts, Alan is actively involved in a number of Google’scommunity-related activities such as The Second Harvest Food Bank and the Anita Borg Scholarship Fund. Alan is anauthor of 9 publications and holds 10 patents. He earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of CentralFlorida.
You may know him best for his world-record setting jump from the stratosphere. Taken from the New YorkTimes article by By John Markoff, published on October 14, 2014:
ROSWELL, N.M. — A well-known computer scientist parachuted from a balloon near the top of the stratosphere onFriday, falling faster than the speed of sound and breaking the world altitude record set just two years ago.
The jump was made by Alan Eustace, 57, a senior vice president of Google. At dawn he was lifted from an abandonedrunway at the airport here by a balloon filled with 35,000 cubic feet of helium.
For a little over two hours, the balloon ascended at speeds up to 1,600 feet per minute to an altitude of more than 25miles. Mr. Eustace dangled underneath in a specially designed spacesuit with an elaborate life-support system. Hereturned to earth just 15 minutes after starting his fall.
“It was amazing,” he said. “It was beautiful. You could see the darkness of space and you could see the layers ofatmosphere, which I had never seen before.”

Rotary AnniversariesTHE DICTIONARY PROJECT GOES TO BOSNIA AND KOSOVO!
Reported by Harlow Hyde
Our Rotary Club has expanded its outreach by
providing several boxes of dictionaries to students in
Bosnia and Kosovo over the past few months. President
Harper Hill donated five boxes of the student dictionaries
which were left over from last year and Harlow Hyde
added three boxes he’d purchased directly from The
Dictionary Project.
Students at a school in Bosnia examine their new dictionaries.
Contact was made with Rotary Clubs in Bosnia and
Kosovo and the clubs donated the dictionaries to local
schools which have English teaching programs. This was a
“pilot project” to determine if the dictionaries were
considered useful by students and teachers in those
nations.
The reports received were very favorable and our
club may expand this effort even further in the future. The
Dictionary Project in South Carolina is very interested in our
efforts and featured our project with a photo on its web site
and in its newsletter. Thank you for your support of this
important project!
