President's Message May 27, 2014
Welcome to the best Club in Rotary… except when PDG Frank Ortiz is in the house; then our hats are off to theRotary Club of Santa Maria Sunrise! Meanwhile, our beautiful view of the ocean, a delicious lunch, and severalguests and potential new members made for a fun and enjoyable lunch on the hill. Joe led us in a moment tohonor those commemorated by Memorial Day and a moment of silence for those caught in the Isla Vistatragedy; somber notes both. We saluted then glad we were onto our musical lesson for the week; a classic from the early ‘70s by Crosby Stills Nash & Young “Teach Your Children Well”; apropos on several levels for today and this past weekend. Thank you Del!
Lynda was happy to only have to pay for the flight and not actually go to Dallas this last weekend, Bill gave usan ABC of Rotary regarding “RIBI” (you are going to know more about how Rotary works by the time you getthrough this year!), and the Dodgers are on the roll, so join us for Dodger Day on Sunday, June 15 (check inwith Robert).
Our Club has a long history of support and involvement with international projects including educationalmaterials to the Philippines with Paul, the Peace Market in the Congo with Mark, and this year’s efforts withUnite the Light (solar lights to children in the Congo), Ghana Street Girl Project (joint project with Ojai Club1),Medical Vans in Chile (joint project with Ventura South Club2), and our Polio Plus effort this year (raisingmore than $4,000!). So it is natural for our friend and fellow Rotarian PDG Frank Ortiz to present on anotheramazing and successful Rotary effort, GOCARE in Central America and specifically Nicaragua.
GOCARE provides a structured program for educating children, young adults, andadults (almost a cradle to grave system) with all aspects of education. Their approachto eradicating poverty is through education, be it vocational, English as a secondlanguage, health and hygiene, and much, much more. “It’s like a prep school wherestudent make a commitment to “give back” to their community… it is a cycle of improvement focused on helping youth break out of poverty”. GOCARE has beenworking for a number of years in Nicaragua and is expanding throughout CentralAmerica. GOCARE supports long-term student development by providing communitycenters, like the one in Pantanal, leadership programs like RYLA, vocational programs
(computers, sewing), and much, much more. Many of the leaders of District 5240 like Frank and PDG, JaneMcClenahan are actively involved with GOCARE and they are seeking our support and involvement.
Please join us next week for a visit from our own Harlan Green who will be speaking on “Understanding theModern Financial World”… and signing a few copies of his book of the same name!

Sidebar: Teach Your Children, written by Graham Nash / Performed By: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
"Teach Your Children" is a song by Graham Nash. Although it was written when Nash was a member of The Hollies, it was never recorded by that group, and first appeared on the album Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released in 1970. It quickly became a counterculture anthem, one of the first public performances of the song having taken place on November 15, 1969, at a San Francisco rally against the Vietnam War.
Nash, who is also a photographer and collector of photographs, has stated in an interview that the immediate inspiration for the song came from a famous photograph by Diane Arbus, "Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park." The image, which depicts a child with an angry expression holding the toy weapon, prompted Nash to reflect on the societal implications of messages given to children about war and other issues. The lyrics are powerful!
You, who are on the road, must have a code that you can live by. And so become yourself because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well, their father's hell did slowly go by, And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix, the one you'll know by.
Refrain: Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of the tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by, And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by, And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix, the one you'll know by.
(Refrain)
GOCARE provides a ray of hope through education and mentoring to help break the hold that the oppression of poverty has on the people of Nicaragua. The program was created to empower people through education and provide opportunities to live better lives. A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization Headquartered in Ventura CA Founded in 2001 A cutting-edge education model recognized by the Nicaragua Ministry of Education Over 1,100 students have graduated from its programs Has a core philosophy of come back to give back which encourages graduates to become community leaders and mentor students of their own

Geo Query of the Day: Where is Nicaragua? What countries border Nicaragua to the north and south? What is the
capital of Nicaragua? What is the population? What interesting coincidence between Nicaragua and US Currency
exists today?
Answer: Central America, Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, Managua, population of over 6 million
people, and the “Great Seal of Nicaragua” includes the phrase “En Dios Confiamos” or in English “In God We

Committee News: You will note increased activity on our Club’s “Signature Programs” like the “ Public Service Awards” (thank you Lynda!), “SBCC Vocational Scholarships” (thank you Kati and Carol!), "Foundation Spring Grants" (thank you Murray & Foundation Board), and our "Annual Golf Tournament & Dinner" (thank you Carolyn, Bill, and Team!). These events seem to magically occur but actually take a lot of effort by dedicated Rotarians willing to pitch in and make things happen! Please thank these Rotarians the next time you see them for their efforts on behalf of our Club and Rotary!
Also, please extend a hearty "Thank You" to our Board and Committee members for their service to the Club this year. We would not be the Club we are today without their efforts! Note the Board meets in June for its annual retreat to discuss the Club direction for 2014-2015 and all types of Club business; feel free to ask any of our Board members for an update or answer any questions regarding the Club and its operations.

President’s MessageJune 2014
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Ron D. Burton President, Rotary International
Ron D. Burton
District 5240 Montecito rotary club axIS MAY 27, 2014
We have a saying in Oklahoma that you need to leave the woodpile just a little higher than you found it. To do that, I needed to ask you to get involved. Involvement is what our theme this year, Engage Rotary, Change Lives, is all about. And, as each of us has done that – as each of us has gotten up out of our chairs and truly engaged Rotary – we have changed lives.
This year, I asked each one of you to bring in one new member. The Board has laid a foundation for strengthening membership around the globe: Sixteen regional membership plans are now in place. They are built around making sure that we give people a reason to be in Rotary. I believe that if we can get prospective members to help us with a project – it could be reading to kids, or
working in a soup kitchen, or picking up trash along the highway – the rest will take care of itself. They will realize that they made a difference in someone's life. And they'll also realize that when you give through Rotary service, you get so much more in return.
I also asked each one of you to make a gift of some amount to our Rotary Foundation. All of our governors did that and became the first class in the history of Rotary to make that commitment.
Sometimes we get comfortable in going to our club and not having any responsibility. Maybe it's because we haven't been asked to be more engaged. And, of course, it's great to go to your meeting and see your friends. But if you want to get fired up, you need to be doing projects. Hands-on projects are great equalizers. When you're unloading boxes off a truck, you're just like the next person, and that person is just like you. When everyone's serving together, there's a camaraderie, and that's how you keep people engaged.
Rotarians sometimes don't realize all that Rotary is doing and is capable of doing. If they could witness the impact of the projects I have seen this year, it would change their lives. They would understand that they belong to an organization whose members have a common desire to do something good and who, working together, accomplish incredible things.
I continue to be in awe of the good I see Rotarians doing. I am firmly convinced that the woodpile is just a little higher because of your efforts. It is my hope that each one of you will continue to Engage Rotary, Change Lives.
