PRLS stands forPotential Rotary Leaders Seminars and is a program of District 5240, USAThe goal of PRLS, begun in 1993, is to provide a set of training sessions wherein current and future Rotary leaders could learn to become more effective in their leadership roles. The basic PRLS course consists of a one-day event covering five sessions: "Leadership," "Leading a Meeting," "Public Speaking," "Rotary, Your Club and You," and "Communications." This program was specifically developed to train individuals whose goals include a future leadership position in Rotary. They learn skills that will make them more effective in that role. The instruction was carefully designed to improve individual leadership skills that are broad based and not just Rotary- specific. Participants have found substantial value in the many practical applications of information presented throughout the curriculum. The program's blend of curricular theory and practical application skills helps prepare students for success in any leadership role."This PRLS program offers practical training in professional circumstances that can benefit anyone on both a personal and professional level.

THE OBJECT OF PRLSTo provide a training environment for Rotarians to learn effectiveness as individuals on a daily basis.

A complete schedule of classes are located here: www.prls.org/calendar.html (Starting next week I will list current classes at this location).

If I had a Hammer written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in 1949

Written in support of the those oppressed, it was first recorded by The Weavers, a folk music quartet composed of Seeger, Hays, Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman. In 1962, Peter, Paul & Mary made it a #10 hit The following year Trini Lopez made it a #3 hit. It’s been recorded in Italian, French, Spanish, Czech & Arabic! Dozens of recordings incl. The Seekers, The Brothers Four, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash & Leonard Nimoy!

If I had a hammer,

I'd hammer in the morning, I'd hammer in the evening, All over this land, I'd hammer out danger, I'd hammer out a warning, I'd hammer out love between, My brothers and my sisters, All over this land.

If I had a bell, I'd ring it in the morning, I'd ring it in the evening, All over this land, I'd ring out danger, I'd ring out a warning, I'd ring out love between, My brothers and my sisters, All over this land.

If I had a song I'd sing it in the morning I'd sing it in the evening all over this land I'd sing out danger I'd sing out a warning I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

Well, I've got a hammer and I've got a bell and I've got a song to sing all over this land It's the hammer of justice It's the bell of freedom It's a song about love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

It's the hammer of justice It's the bell of freedom It's a song about love between my brothers and my sisters All over this la-a-and !! YEAH!

President's MessageAugust 2014

Montecito rotary club axIS District 5240

GARY C.K. HUANG President 2014-15

In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There is a good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membership early in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!

We have talked for many years about the importance of the family of Rotary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, my wife, Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We attended the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, and she said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she joined that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Now that club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan.

Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still has far more men as members than it does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we bring more women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospective female members – and become more productive as well.

This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membership support team pin. This means that if you invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of growing membership doesn't end when a new member joins. It ends only when a new member is enjoying being a Rotarian and never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs are enjoyable places to be is a key part of growing membership.

People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and Light Up Rotary together!
