Our District Conference will be May 2-4 at Knotts Berry FarmSpeaker: Our Program this week was “The Renaissance of Chinese Culture” presented by Dr. Shizong Chen, President of the Molecular Biology Company of San Diego. Dr. Chen gave a very informative talk on the history of Chinese culture and its recent resurgence after decimation by the Chinese Communist Party. The program covered three important stages of Chinese Culture: (1) Original Culture; (2)
The loss/destruction stage and; (3) the Revival. The Original Culture Stage describes the five thousand years of “Cultivation Practice” - the foundation of all elements of Chinese Society – from Medicine to the Arts. Cultivation Practice focuses on mind-body transcendence. In fact, the word culture is derived from the word cultivation. The second Loss/Destruction Stage occurred during ascendency of the Chinese Communist Party, which led a mass destruction of Chinese Culture. The Third Revival Stage is characterized by a recent resurgence of the “Cultivation of Practice”, which is reconnecting people to the ancient Chinese culture. We were encouraged to attend the ShenYun 2013 dance performance at Segerstrom Center Jan. 18th -20th which depicts these three stages thru spectacular dance performances. Ten percent of proceeds from tickets purchased by Rotarians will be donated to their club. Special phone number needed. - Bill Zeller
