We were blown away (at times, literally with a 24Km wind over the water) by the success of this year’s event. The ‘atrocious’

weather was a binding ‘force’ that kept everyone focused on the regatta races, team spirit and rivalry while the constantly

ROTARY FAMILY HEALTH DAYS (RFHD) – 3-6 OCTOBER 2017

Report by Bev Frieslich on the 4 RFHD sites of the COGH 3-6 October - Dated: 15 October 2017 Tuesday 3 October: Red Hill Although it was a slow morning and we saw only 60+ people, Ann Albrecht said that they have a clinic there on Tuesday anyway - hence the choice for my first site - and on normal clinic days they see half that number.. The Vision testing was so popular - we did 49 tests and dispensed 39 Readers . So yes! it can be considered a success, and we definitely made a difference. Maybe next year they will remember the readers and we will get a more enthusiastic response Wednesday 4 October: Masiphumelele was booked for the Wednesday but we were advised to cancel as there was a protest march planned at the last minute. However, only 10-20 marchers gathered so we could .have done it, but the safety of staff must prevail at all times and I was grateful for the guidance offered by Rotarian Manu We redid the RFHD on Thursday 12 October in the Living Hope hall in Masi for only a half day as that was all the time they could give us at the venue. It went very well and we gave out over 250 readers. Of particular pleasure for me, was that Sue Paget and husband Trevor plus PDG Sandra Mc Kersey, from New Zealand and a RFHA Director - worked with us on site. For all of them it was the first time any of them had worked on a RFHD site, which was quite an honour for me and an eye opener and learning curve for them all ‼ Thursday 5 October: Ocean View on Thursday was a challenge as, with the recent shootings and gangsterism, none of the Rotarians were (understandably) prepared to come into Ocean View. I called councillor Pat Francke who rallied 6 women from the Ocean View community ( DA members) which amply covered for the Rotarians and was supplemented by the EVS Volunteer firefighters who worked on the Vision testing for the second day. We handed out over 400 readers and I must say, the day was a resounding success Friday 6 October: Fish Hoek on the Friday was also very quiet with only 37 people attending but I see it also as a success as we had one family attend that would never have been treated otherwise - and that made all the efforts well worthwhile. It gave us a good perspective and we have learned a lot from the experience. We will do it again next year and be better prepared and better advertised etc. It also gave me the opportunity to meet and work with our local clinic sister, who has now invited me to join their Health association. Following on the concept of Rotary Clubs working with or adopting local clinics in a synergistic manner or as a project, this is proof that the idea has already borne fruit here in Fish Hoek. The ECHO newspaper last week gave us great coverage with an article and pictures taken at the Fish Hoek site

My personal and sincere thanks go to: Throughout the 4 RFHD days, I was supported in every way by my President, Mrs Marge Upfold who worked with me and helped me at each site. For that I am grateful and overwhelmed. She was my rock and gave me courage to push on regardless and as a result, we managed 4 sites and handled over 600 clients!! Also of huge and inestimable support was the EVS - Emergency Volunteer Fire Fighting Services under Davin Chown. He made it possible for the Team under the supportive leadership of Mrs Shirley Arendse Botes to be on site with us and help with the running of the RFHD sites and Vision testing. Without their hard work and passion, things would have been very different, as they lifted my energy levels and enthusiasm beyond my own expectations. These amazing young people (many of whom are still in High school) have become role models of dedication, commitment and integrity which I would like to strive to achieve. They have humbled me The lady members of the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope who were supportive on site on some of the days and also helping in other ways before, on the days and at the event, and Susan and Marge have also spent hours over the past few days assisting me to input the data from the four sites all of which was really most appreciated

KICK POLIO OUT OF AFRICA- Almost there – We are THIS close – Almost there!

Paul Netzel Rotary Foundation Chair, hands over the exclusive PolioPlus Base Relief and letter for Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu on behalf of RI President Ian Riseley at our Rotary Health Day Site in Khayelitsha on Wednesday, 4 October 2017.

The gift to Archbishop Tutu is a token of Rotary International's deep appreciation for his long- standing support of Rotary's Polio eradication efforts. He was the first signatory of the ball of "Kick Polio Out Of Africa". June Webber brought with her to Bibliotheca Alexandrina and it was kicked from Alexandria, to Montreal, June 2010.

“As coordinator of the campaign, it is so encouraging to see the huge strides that have been made in the last 7yrs years to eradicate Polio in Africa, & in particular as a result of the massive ’Kick Polio Out of Africa’ campaign which ran ahead of the Soccer World Cup Event in South Africa in 2010. The soccer ball, signed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who was also an Ambassador for Rotary's ‘End Polio Now’ Campaign, was "kicked off" from Cape Town on 23 February 2010 at an E N landmark lighting of the Old Port Captain Building in the Waterfront, Cape Town. The ball travelled through 23

Polio affected countries in Africa in four months, exiting in Alexandria on 12 June 2010. Now with Nigeria on the brink of certification of being polio free, we are almost there! “ PDG June Webber Paul Netzel (Center) the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation with L-R Patrick Coleman RRFC, DGE Casper Kruger on his right (your left) and DGN David Holtzhausen, PDG June Webber and Alicia Michael - President of RFHA, on his left (your right)

Polio Day 24th October Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. In 2007, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined Rotary in its commitment to ending Polio. Since 2013, the Gates Foundation has matched every $1 Rotary commits to Polio eradication 2-to-1, up to $35 million per year. Rotary, with matching funds from the Gates Foundation, has contributed more than $1.6 billion to end Polio. Since we started the fight against polio, we’ve reduced the number of polio cases by 99.9 % and reached more than 2.5 billion children with the vaccine. There are fewer Polio cases today than ever before, but we will not stop until we reach zero. If Polio is not eradicated, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralysed. Global health care costs would rise dramatically, and many children’s quality of life would be drastically diminished. We continue the fight to end Polio and help save lives and give a child a chance at a prosperous future. Perhaps we can tune in at 23h30 to On the 24th October, which is Polio Day, RI President, Ian Riseley and Bill Gates will do a live streaming from the Gates Foundation headquarters in Seattle, which will bring together more many viewers around the world.

Let us join global health experts and celebrities to share our progress on the road to Polio eradication
