Introduction

I am thrilled to have the honor of sharing this information, published by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The directory is based on an accepted definition of garden as being a site as: “grounds adorned with flowers, shrubs, and trees for public enjoyment,” (American Heritage Dictionary, 2nd Edition). I believe that each garden listed is the result of a joyous vision, creative fund-raising and a united goal of ecological leadership. The gardens may be visited, studied and may become “memory-makers” for the visitor.

My love for flowers has been nurtured as long as I can remember. My mother always planted a variety of flowers in her kitchen garden. As a child, I recognized the beauty and enjoyed bringing flowers to my mother. She encouraged me to cut flowers of my choice, arrange them in a favorite vase and place them in my room.

My parents enjoyed traveling and made certain that the family visited gardens in our area. I was fascinated by these visits and never had enough time to spend looking, smelling, and touching the different plants. I am fortunate to have memories of visiting Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina. In the early years of my marriage, while my husband was stationed in Bavaria, I was intrigued by visiting many of the famous gardens in Europe.

As an active garden club member, I was appointed Chairman of the South Atlantic Region Unified Project. This project re-established the Martha Franck Fragrance Garden in Raleigh, North Carolina at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind. The original garden had been located in Butner, NC on the grounds of the Rehabilitation Services which were razed due to land development.

The master plan of the Franck Garden was designed to provide a safe environment and to experience scent, sound and touch. The Garden is being installed to meet the American Disability Act and is truly an inspiration of what can be done in Garden Therapy through volunteering time, talents and re-sources.

The Governor Morehead School for the Blind provided a 1.1 acre site in the central area of the campus for the installation of the Franck Garden. Start-up monies were raised from garden clubs, individuals and businesses for this development. A Standing Committee was named later by the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. and charged with the responsibility to: raise funds, design, install and maintain the Franck Garden. The challenges presented to me as Chairman were diverse. Research, study, and visiting therapeutic gardens gave guidance to our working committee.

The first phase of the Garden is the Mobility Garden which serves as a classroom. This section features four ‘key-hole’ gardens including Butterfly, Rose, Texture and Woodland. Also included in the Mobility Garden is a beautiful Bronze bust of Helen Keller, mounted above a plaque written in Braille and in raised letters: “When one door of happiness closes, another one opens.”

The Central Plaza, a favorite area for visitors, provides a walkway leading to the Johnson Fountain, the Louis Braille relief and the Gazebo. The third phase of this installation is the Children’s Plaza which includes the great lawn and raised Culinary Garden of black granite. The younger children help plant this area with herbs and vegetables. One remaining design to be installed is the North Carolina Garden. The octagonal surround wall of native granite will provide representative tactile symbols of North Carolina.

Garden Therapy uses garden-related activities in aiding recovery and the rehabilitation of the physically and mentally challenged. While the average public or private garden may not be a relaxing place for a person who is impaired, a specially designed sanctuary will provide a place for peace and sensory exploration. The richness of nature may be experienced and perhaps awaken the individual’s interest in learning and respecting the environment.

Gardens are the result of creative sleepless nights, diligent energy in fund-raising (particularly in negotiating municipal planning) and endless installation and maintenance. Visitors come from different backgrounds and appreciation. Some may note design, plant material, texture, color, water, walkways, provision for wildlife, while others will say “I went to the gardens!”

As Chairman of Garden Therapy for the National Garden Clubs, Inc. I submit this publication, Therapy Gardens for the Visually and Physically Impaired, for the benefit of members and other interested individuals. I believe, without apology, that all gardens may provide therapeutic experiencesfor the garden visitor. Addresses and contact numbers are given for explorationby those wishing to travel or perhaps live.

I accept that ecological endeavors present challenges for diversity dependent upon zones. There is a continuing need for education, developing awareness from childhood to the adult status of being ‘decision makers’ in garden clubs, plant societies and municipalities. The ethical protection of the environment must be an expressed goal of garden planners. The movement among municipalities to have ‘appearance committees’, the surge of educational training now offered through the Master Gardening programs of state Cooperative Extension agencies and the continued leadership of garden clubs and plant societies will ensure the goal of protecting our environment. Working together, we will make this goal a reality for future generations.
